  • Waves of fashion : The consuming production of management control
  • 2011
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The responsiveness of organizational leaders regarding suggestions related to various managerial techniques has led to the coinage of the ‘management fashion’ idiom. It has been convincingly argued that phenomena like management control systems are prone to trends, and that such trends permeate into the daily life of managers through the use of persuasive rhetoric. This thesis is a theory-generating study of change in management control systems. More precisely, its purpose is to seek an understanding of how fashions within the field of management control emerge through processes of interaction and co-production. By asking the question “how do the forces involved in the shaping of a market for management control systems interact and combine in order to create management fashions?” the thesis seeks to generate a comprehensive conjecture on the management fashion setting process. The thesis is based on an empirical case study completed with extensive literature readings. In order to generate theory, a methodology based on abductive reasoning has been produced. Theoretically, the thesis borrows from micro sociological theory on imitation and co-production but extends also into such fields as psychology, aesthetics, rhetoric and economics; aside from the obvious management control and management accounting themes. The thesis concludes by producing a comprehensive model of the management fashion setting process. The contribution of the thesis can be understood as either providing an alternative to or completing the dominant interpretation of the phenomena. The main difference between the arrived at suggestion and the prevailing interpretation is the role of the actors which is changed from norm following consumers of fashion to creative producers of fashion. This change represents a change in scientific traditions and necessitates the adoption of additional frames of reference when studying management fashion phenomena.

  • Invasive strategies and outcomes for non-ST-segment elevation acute coronary syndromes : a twelve-year experience from SWEDEHEART.
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: EuroIntervention. - 1774-024X .- 1969-6213. ; 12:9, s. 1108-1116
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • AIMS: Despite recommendations in recent guidelines for a routine invasive strategy for non-ST-segment elevation acute coronary syndrome (NSTE-ACS), long-term data on the implementation of treatment strategies in clinical practice are not available. Our aim was to provide long-term data on the implementation of a routine invasive strategy in NSTE-ACS in clinical practice.METHODS AND RESULTS: In the SWEDEHEART registry, data from 204,092 consecutive NSTE-ACS patients admitted between 1996 and 2007 were recorded. The use of the routine invasive strategy, retrospectively defined as coronary angiography (and subsequent revascularisation) within three days after admission, increased from 3.8% in the period 1996-1998 to 37.4% in the period 2005-2007. The largest absolute increase in the use of this strategy was observed in low-risk patients, while a similar relative increase was observed in all risk categories. The use of the selective invasive strategy, defined as coronary angiography later than three days after admission or none at all, decreased from 96.2% in the period 1996-1998 to 62.5% in the period 2005-2007. In the total population, there was a gradual decrease in three-year all-cause mortality, from 29.1% in the period 1996-1998 to 23.9% in the period 2005-2007.CONCLUSIONS: There has been an increase in the use of a routine invasive strategy in NSTE-ACS patients over the course of 12 years in Sweden. There was a decrease in three-year mortality over the same time course.

  • Open data and digital morphology.
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the Royal Society of London. Biological Sciences. - : The Royal Society. - 0962-8452 .- 1471-2954. ; 284:1852, s. 1-10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Over the past two decades, the development of methods for visualizing and analysing specimens digitally, in three and even four dimensions, has transformed the study of living and fossil organisms. However, the initial promise that the widespread application of such methods would facilitate access to the underlying digital data has not been fully achieved. The underlying datasets for many published studies are not readily or freely available, introducing a barrier to verification and reproducibility, and the reuse of data. There is no current agreement or policy on the amount and type of data that should be made available alongside studies that use, and in some cases are wholly reliant on, digital morphology. Here, we propose a set of recommendations for minimum standards and additional best practice for three-dimensional digital data publication, and review the issues around data storage, management and accessibility.

  • Arabidopsis genes encoding mitochondrial type II NAD(P)H dehydrogenases have different evolutionary orgin and show distinct responses to light.
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Plant Physiology. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 1532-2548 .- 0032-0889. ; 133:2, s. 642-652
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In addition to proton-pumping complex I, plant mitochondria contain several type II NAD(P)H dehydrogenases in the electron transport chain. The extra enzymes allow the nonenergy-conserving electron transfer from cytoplasmic and matrix NAD(P)H to ubiquinone. We have investigated the type II NAD(P)H dehydrogenase gene families in Arabidopsis. This model plant contains two and four genes closely related to potato (Solanum tuberosum) genes nda1 and ndb1, respectively. A novel homolog, termed ndc1, with a lower but significant similarity to potato nda1 and ndb1, is also present. All genes are expressed in several organs of the plant. Among the nda genes, expression of nda1, but not nda2, is dependent on light and circadian regulation, suggesting separate roles in photosynthesis-associated and other respiratory NADH oxidation. Genes from all three gene families encode proteins exclusively targeted to mitochondria, as revealed by expression of green fluorescent fusion proteins and by western blotting of fractionated cells. Phylogenetic analysis indicates that ndc1 affiliates with cyanobacterial type II NADH dehydrogenase genes, suggesting that this gene entered the eukaryotic cell via the chloroplast progenitor. The ndc1 should then have been transferred to the nucleus and acquired a signal for mitochondrial targeting of the protein product. Although they are of different origin, the nda, ndb, and ndc genes carry an identical intron position.

  • Community-based gender perspectives of triage and treatment in suspected myocardial infarction.
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: International journal of cardiology. - : Elsevier BV. - 0167-5273 .- 1874-1754. ; 156:2, s. 139-143
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Abstract BACKGROUND: The gender perspectives of the triage of acute coronary syndromes (ACS) in a community are insufficiently explored. METHODS: Patients (n=3224) with symptoms of ACS, in whom ECG was sent by the ambulance crew to a coronary care unit (CCU)/ cath lab, were investigated in the municipality of Göteborg in 2004-2007. Background, triage priority, investigations and treatment were analysed (p-values age adjusted) in relation to gender. Data were compared with three published studies (1995-2002: Surveys 1-3). RESULTS: Women were directly admitted to the CCU significantly less frequently than men (23 versus 35%, p<0.0001). Adjusted for ECG findings, age, symptoms and medical history, odds ratio and 95% confidence limits (for direct admission; men versus women) were 0.61; 0.46-0.82. SURVEY 1: Patients with ACS, aged <80, in CCU at a university hospital (n=1744). Only minor differences between women and men, with regard to investigations and treatment, were found. SURVEY 2: Patients discharged from hospital (dead or alive) with AMI, regardless of type of ward (n=1423). Fewer women than men were admitted to CCU and fewer women underwent coronary angiography (21% versus 40%; p=0.02) and coronary revascularisation (12% versus 27%; p=0.004). SURVEY 3: Patients with symptoms of AMI (n=930) and patients with a confirmed AMI (n=130) from a pre-hospital perspective. Women tended to be given lower priority than men both by the ambulance dispatchers and by the ambulance crew. CONCLUSION: In our practice setting, men are given priority over women in admission to CCU, but no gender differences are seen thereafter.

  • Genetic effects on the timing of parturition and links to fetal birth weight.
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Nature genetics. - 1546-1718. ; 55:4, s. 559-567
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The timing of parturition is crucial for neonatal survival and infant health. Yet, its genetic basis remains largely unresolved. We present a maternal genome-wide meta-analysis of gestational duration (n=195,555), identifying 22 associated loci (24 independent variants) and an enrichment in genes differentially expressed during labor. A meta-analysis of preterm delivery (18,797 cases, 260,246 controls) revealed six associated loci and large genetic similarities with gestational duration. Analysis of the parental transmitted and nontransmitted alleles (n=136,833) shows that 15 of the gestational duration genetic variants act through the maternal genome, whereas 7 act both through the maternal and fetal genomes and 2 act only via the fetal genome. Finally, the maternal effects on gestational duration show signs of antagonistic pleiotropy with the fetal effects on birth weight: maternal alleles that increase gestational duration have negative fetal effects on birth weight. The present study provides insights into the genetic effects on the timing of parturition and the complex maternal-fetal relationship between gestational duration and birth weight.
