  • Hydrochlorothiazide, but not Candesartan, aggravates insulin resistance and causes visceral and hepatic fat accumulation : the mechanisms for the diabetes preventing effect of Candesartan (MEDICA) Study
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Hypertension. - : American Heart Association. - 0194-911X .- 1524-4563. ; 52:6, s. 1030-1037
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Treatment with angiotensin II receptor blockers is associated with lower risk for the development of type 2 diabetes mellitus compared with thiazide diuretics. The Mechanisms for the Diabetes Preventing Effect of Candesartan Study addressed insulin action and secretion and body fat distribution after treatment with candesartan, hydrochlorothiazide, and placebo. Twenty-six nondiabetic, abdominally obese, hypertensive patients were included in a multicenter 3-way crossover trial, and 22 completers (by predefined criteria; 10 men and 12 women) were included in the analyses. They underwent 12-week treatment periods with candesartan (C; 16 to 32 mg), hydrochlorothiazide (H; 25 to 50 mg), and placebo (P), respectively, and the treatment order was randomly assigned and double blinded. Intravenous glucose tolerance tests and euglycemic hyperinsulinemic (56 mU/m(2) per minute) clamps were performed. Intrahepatic and intramyocellular and extramyocellular lipid content and subcutaneous and visceral abdominal adipose tissue were measured using proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy and MRI. Insulin sensitivity (M-value) was reduced following H versus C and P (6.07+/-2.05, 6.63+/-2.04, and 6.90+/-2.10 mg/kg of body weight per minute, mean+/-SD; P

  • Apomorphine formulation may influence subcutaneous complications from continuous subcutaneous apomorphine infusion in Parkinson's disease
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of Neurology. - : D. Steinkopff-Verlag. - 0340-5354 .- 1432-1459. ; 267:11, s. 3411-3417
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Continuous subcutaneous (s.c.) apomorphine infusion is an effective therapy for Parkinson's disease (PD), but a limitation is the formation of troublesome s.c. nodules. Various chemically non-identical apomorphine formulations are available. Anecdotal experiences have suggested that shifting from one of these (Apo-Go PumpFill®; apoGPF) to another (Apomorphine PharmSwed®; apoPS) may influence the occurrence and severity of s.c. nodules. We, therefore, followed 15 people with advanced PD (median PD-duration, 15 years; median "off"-phase Hoehn and Yahr, IV) on apoGPF and with troublesome s.c. nodules who were switched to apoPS. Data were collected at baseline, at the time of switching, and at a median of 1, 2.5, and 7.3 months post-switch. Total nodule numbers (P < 0.001), size (P < 0.001), consistency (P < 0.001), skin changes (P = 0.058), and pain (P ≤ 0.032) improved over the observation period. PD severity and dyskinesias tended to improve and increase, respectively. Apomorphine doses were stable, but levodopa doses increased by 100 mg/day. Patient-reported apomorphine efficacy tended to increase and all participants remained on apoPS throughout the observation period; with the main patient-reported reason being improved nodules. These observations suggest that patients with s.c. nodules caused by apoGPF may benefit from switching to apoPS in terms of s.c. nodule occurrence and severity. Alternatively, observed benefits may have been due to the switch itself. As nodule formation is a limiting factor in apomorphine treatment, a controlled prospective study comparing local tolerance with different formulations is warranted.

  • Ergodic Theory of Kusuoka Measures
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Journal of Fractal Geometry. - : European Mathematical Society Publishing House. - 2308-1309 .- 2308-1317. ; 4:2, s. 185-214
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the analysis on self-similar fractal sets, the Kusuoka measure plays an important role. Here we investigate the Kusuoka measure from an ergodic theoretic viewpoint, seen as an invariant measure on a symbolic space. Our investigation shows that the Kusuoka measure generalizes Bernoulli measures and their properties to higher dimensions of an underlying finite dimensional vector space. Our main result is that the transfer operator on functions has a spectral gap when restricted to a certain Banach space that contains the Hölder continuous functions, as well as the highly discontinuous g" role="presentation">g-function associated to the Kusuoka measure. As a consequence, we obtain exponential decay of correlations. In addition, we provide some explicit rates of convergence for a family of generalized Sierpinski gaskets.

  • Factors of r-partite graphs and bounds for the strong chromatic number
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Ars combinatoria. - : Charles Babbage Research Center. - 0381-7032. ; 95, s. 277-287
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We give an optimal degree condition for a tripartite graph to have a spanning subgraph consisting of complete graphs of order 3. This result is used to give an upper bound of 2 Delta for the strong chromatic number of n vertex graphs with Delta >= n/6.

  • Phase transitions in long-range Ising models and an optimal condition for factors of g-measures
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • We weaken the assumption of summable variations in a paper by Verbitskiy \cite{verb} to a weaker condition, Berbee's condition, in order for a 1-block factor (a single site renormalisation) of the full shift space on finitely many symbols to have a $g$-measure with a continuous $g$-function. But we also prove by means of a counterexample, that this condition is (within constants) optimal. The counterexample is based on the second of our main results, where we prove that there is an inverse critical temperature in a one-sided long-range Ising model which is at most 8 times the critical inverse temperature for the (two-sided) Ising model with long-range interactions.
