  • GIS-based methods for sustainable wind power planning
  • 2017
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Research motivationRenewable energy has great importance in the work to counteract the global climate changes. The Swedish government has seta target that in 2020, 50% of the energy use shall come from renewable energy, and the government has also declared a longterm commitment for Sweden to be independent of fossil fuels. To reach these targets wind power is expected to play a greatpart, and approximately 50 TWh of new wind power is needed to meet this objective, compared to the current annual production of approximately 16 TWh. However, climate change is not the only issue at hand, and there is a risk of conflicts between meetingthe targets for renewable energy and other sustainability objectives, e.g. concerning ecosystem services, such as habitatsupporting biodiversity, recreation and cultural landscapes. Hence to steer towards a sustainable planning of wind power, targets and objectives as well as decision support has to be dealt with systematically, encompassing social, economic, technical and ecological perspectives.ObjectiveThe objective of the project is to develop GIS-based methods that can be used as planning support in sustainable planning of wind power, in cooperation with regional and municipal actors. The method will function as decision support, which will helpplanners and decision makers at local and regional level to systematically handle the different aspects related to wind power localisation.MethodologyThe project is performed in collaboration with the County Administrative Board of Västernorrland County, which is the study areafor the project. Initially, a literature study is performed to gain knowledge about earlier research in the field and identify importantfactors to include in the methodology. Workshops are held with the included actors, to gain further understanding of what information is relevant when planning for wind power, and to gain local knowledge about the study area; what issues are at hand, and what factors govern wind power planning in the particular area. During the workshops different scenarios related to theplanning process are also developed. The method will include the development of a number of GIS-models to be used in a multicriteria analysis that can be used for design and evaluation of the different planning scenarios.Preliminary resultsThe literature study as well as the workshops reveals that the location of wind turbines often can have impact on, and render conflict between, different interests and objectives. Factors of high concern when planning for locating wind turbines in the County of Västernorrland are, besides wind speed and technical considerations; noise impact, visual impact, and impact on certain bird species, reindeer hearding and recreation. In order to handle these factors, multi-criteria decision analysis within a GIS environment can support planning in the face of complex problems, with capabilities to handle multiple and often conflicting objectives, and to find sustainable solutions to decision-making problems.Management implicationsThe project will result in a General GIS-based Planning Support (GPS) methodology to integrate important sustainability issuesin wind power planning, which can be applied generally in future spatial planning. The project will contribute to a morepredictable planning process, where disparate sustainability targets will be handled in an integrated and systematic way, therebyincreasing the possibility of reaching the targets.

  • The Human Endogenous Protection System against Cell-Free Hemoglobin and Heme Is Overwhelmed in Preeclampsia and Provides Potential Biomarkers and Clinical Indicators.
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: PLoS ONE. - : Public Library of Science (PLoS). - 1932-6203. ; 10:9
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Preeclampsia (PE) complicates 3-8% of all pregnancies and manifests clinically as hypertension and proteinuria in the second half of gestation. The pathogenesis of PE is not fully understood but recent studies have described the involvement of cell-free fetal hemoglobin (HbF). Hypothesizing that PE is associated with prolonged hemolysis we have studied the response of the cell-free Hb- and heme defense network. Thus, we have investigated the levels of cell-free HbF (both free, denoted HbF, and in complex with Hp, denoted Hp-HbF) as well as the major human endogenous Hb- and heme-scavenging systems: haptoglobin (Hp), hemopexin (Hpx), α1-microglobulin (A1M) and CD163 in plasma of PE women (n = 98) and women with normal pregnancies (n = 47) at term. A significant increase of the mean plasma HbF concentration was observed in women with PE. Plasma levels of Hp and Hpx were statistically significantly reduced, whereas the level of the extravascular heme- and radical scavenger A1M was significantly increased in plasma of women with PE. The Hpx levels significantly correlated with maternal blood pressure. Furthermore, HbF and the related scavenger proteins displayed a potential to be used as clinical biomarkers for more precise diagnosis of PE and are candidates as predictors of identifying pregnancies with increased risk of obstetrical complications. The results support that PE pathophysiology is associated with increased HbF-concentrations and an activation of the physiological Hb-heme defense systems.

  • Review of regional energy efficiency policies towards industrial SMEs from within Europe
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Eceee Industrial Summer Study Proceedings. - 9789198387865 ; , s. 15-22
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Industrial SMEs represent 99 % or more of the total number of companies in most countries, and one-third of the total industrial energy use. Despite this, industrial SMEs have not received much attention both in terms of research and policies. The scientific papers published in the field covers national energy efficiency policy programs and evaluations of these, while scientific studies of regional policy programs are few. SMEs in general have a low capacity to work on improved energy efficiency, and the term SME is generally too vague to provide any guidance on how to design public policy programs. Administrative policies might be a sound approach for medium-sized enterprises but for small-sized enterprises the administrative policies could be less effective. For medium-sized and energy-intensive industrial SMEs, economic and/or regulatory incentives are important, while for small-sized and non-energy intensive industrial SMEs there is a need for a more supportive approach. The aim of this paper is to provide an overview of existing regional energy efficiency policies targeting industrial SMEs in seven selected EU member states. This overview also provides an insight of the type of policy approach (informative, economic or administrative) that is most commonly used in regional policy activities.

  • Pharmacometabolomic Profiling Of The General Population: Relation Of Active Metabolite Levels To Cardiovascular Risk Factor Control And Manifest Atherosclerosis
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Circulation. - 1524-4539. ; 144:suppl_1
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Introduction: The use of medications in the general population has increased over time. Information on active metabolite concentrations for common drugs in the general population is limited. Recent advances in metabolomic technologies have made high-throughput profiling of many active metabolites in large epidemiological cohorts increasingly feasible.Aim: 1. Prospective assessment of the proportion of measurable active metabolite levels of major drugs in the general population using mass spectrometry. 2. Relation of cardiovascular (CV) drugs with inadequate risk factor control and CV disease. Methods: Assessment of CV risk factors by coronary CT angiography and carotid ultrasound imaging in a large prospective cohort of 6,251 individuals randomly selected from the general population in Malmö, Sweden (age 50-64 years). Untargeted metabolomic profiling of fasting plasma was performed by Metabolon, USA in a random subset of 3,986 subjects. Results: Intake of at least one prescribed drug was reported in 1840 subjects (46%). Combination drugs were reported in 249 subjects (6%). The most common drug classes reported were lipid-lowering (n=369, 9% of which most were statins), beta blockers (n=307, 8%), ARB (n=272, 7%), and ACE inhibitors (268, 7%), followed by levothyroxine, CCB, antidepressants, glucocorticoids, PPI, antidiabetic, bronchodilators and diuretics. For major CV drugs, detectable active metabolite levels ranged from 54% (atorvastatin and enalapril) to 96% (metoprolol and metformin). Non-detectable levels of lipid-lowering, antihypertensive, and antidiabetic drugs were associated with higher LDL, cholesterol, BP and glucose, although only antidiabetic drugs were significant (p<0.05). Non-detectable levels of lipid-lowering and antihypertensive drugs were also non-significantly associated with increased coronary calcium and carotid plaque. Conclusion: Our study provides an overview of the distribution of common drugs with detectable levels in a contemporary Swedish population. Pharmacometabolomic profiling revealed that non-measurable levels of common CV drugs were associated with lower risk factor control and non-significant trends towards more atherosclerotic disease by imaging in a substantial number of subjects.

  • Fondaparinux or enoxaparin: A comparative study of postoperative bleeding in coronary artery bypass grafting surgery.
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian cardiovascular journal : SCJ. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1651-2006 .- 1401-7431. ; 44, s. 100-106

    • Objectives. Preoperative treatment with anti-coagulants for patients with non-ST-elevation acute coronary syndromes (NSTE-ACS) exposes patients undergoing surgical revascularization to a higher risk of perioperative bleeding. The aim of this study was to compare the effect on bleeding and transfusion needs during cardiac surgery for patients treated with enoxaparin or fondaparinux. Design. Using a combined retrospective and prospective approach, we studied the outcome of 147 patients with NSTE-ACS referred to coronary artery bypass grafting in terms of bleeding, blood transfusions and other complications. Results. Eighty patients were treated preoperatively with enoxaparin, and 67 patients with fondaparinux. There was no significant difference in postoperative bleeding (532 +/- 355 for enoxaparin group vs. 580 +/- 300 ml for fondaparinux group, p = ns) or transfusion needs for the two groups. A subgroup analysis of the fondaparinux group showed a significantly higher amount of postoperative bleeding after 12 h for patients when preoperative treatment with fondaparinux was discontinued less than 36 h prior to surgery compared to more than 36 h. Discussion. This study suggests that preoperative treatment with fondaparinux for NSTE-ACS is as safe as enoxaparin in terms of postoperative bleeding and transfusion needs. Findings support discontinuation of fondaparinux at 36 h prior to surgery.
