  • Dynamic Response of Tall Timber Buildings Under Service Load : The DynaTTB Research Program
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: EURODYN 2020, XI international conferece on structural dynamics. - : National Technical University of Athens. - 9786188507210 ; , s. 4900-4910
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Wind-induced dynamic excitation is becoming a governing design action determin-ing size and shape of modern Tall Timber Buildings (TTBs). The wind actions generate dynamic loading, causing discomfort or annoyance for occupants due to the perceived horizontal sway – i.e. vibration serviceability failure. Although some TTBs have been instrumented and meas-ured to estimate their key dynamic properties (natural frequencies and damping), no systematic evaluation of dynamic performance pertinent to wind loading has been performed for the new and evolving construction technology used in TTBs. The DynaTTB project, funded by the Forest Value research program, mixes on site measurements on existing buildings excited by heavy shakers, for identification of the structural system, with laboratory identification of building elements mechanical features coupled with numerical modelling of timber structures. The goal is to identify and quantify the causes of vibration energy dissipation in modern TTBs and pro-vide key elements to FE modelers. The first building, from a list of 8, was modelled and tested at full scale in December 2019. Some results are presented in this paper. Four other buildings will be modelled and tested in spring 2020.

The wind actions generate dynamic loading, causing discomfort or annoyance for occupants due to the perceived horizontal sway, i.e. vibration serviceability problem. Although some TTBs have been instrumented and measured to estimate their key dynamic properties (eigenfrequencies, mode shapes and damping), no systematic evaluation of dynamic performance pertinent to wind loading had been performed for the new and evolving construction technologies used in TTBs. The DynaTTB project, funded by the ForestValue research program, mixed on site measurements on existing buildings excited by mass inertia shakers (forced vibration) and/or the wind loads (ambient vibration), for identification of the structural system, with laboratory identification of building elements mechanical features, coupled with numerical modelling of timber structures. The goal is to identify and quantify the causes of vibration energy dissipation in modern TTBs and provide key elements to finite element models. This paper presents an overview of the results of the project and the proposed Guidelines for design of TTBs in relation to their dynamic properties.

  • Geomapping Landscapes of Writing (GLoW) : Large-Scale Spatial Analysis of the Cuneiform Corpus (c. 3400 BCE to 100 CE)
  • 2021
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The cuneiform record ranks among the largest preserved bodies of historical documentation from the ancient world (Streck 2010). Conveyed on omnipresent and extremely durable types of material, cuneiform texts are preserved in immense, extending over all of the Middle East and a historical period of more than three millennia of early human history. Drawing on recent advances in digital humanities and geospatial data mapping, GLoW aims to survey, analyse, and investigate broader, macrohistorical patterns in the formation and preservation of this unique historical record. As a first quantifiable, comprehensive study of the cuneiform corpus, GLoW will provide a benchmark example of the application of digital and spatial computing tools to the study of writing in early human history. This poster offers an introduction to key research foci and the project research programme, including an introduction to data infrastructure, dissemination, and key collaborators.

  • Antimicrobial susceptibility of invasive pneumococcal isolates from a region in south-west Sweden 1998-2001.
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian journal of infectious diseases. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0036-5548 .- 1651-1980. ; 39:1, s. 19-27
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Invasive disease caused by antibiotic resistant pneumococci is a worldwide problem. All invasive pneumococcal strains in an area of south-west Sweden with 1.7 million inhabitants were collected prospectively during 1998-2001. Minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) were determined by E-test and correlated to serotypes and clinical characteristics. Of 827 strains, 744 (90%) were susceptible (S) to all agents tested and 83 (10%) were indeterminate (I) or resistant (R) to at least 1 agent. 22 isolates (2.7%) were I to penicillin (MIC >0.06 to < or = 1.0 mg/l), but none were R (MIC >1.0 mg/l). Numbers and proportions of decreased susceptibility against other agents tested were as follows: erythromycin R: 30 (3.6%), clindamycin R: 6 (0.7%), tetracycline R: 16 (1.9%), moxifloxacin R: 1 (0.1%), cotrimoxazole I: 17 (2%) and R: 31(4%). Non-susceptibility to at least 1 agent was not correlated with age, clinical manifestation, underlying diseases and outcome. The serotype distribution differed between non-susceptible and susceptible strains. The serotypes in the 7-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine covered 42% of all infections and 73% of those caused by non-susceptible strains. In conclusion, the impact of antibiotic resistance in invasive pneumococcal disease remains limited in south-west Sweden.

  • Suffering caused by care - Patients' experiences from hospital settings
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Qualitative Studies on Health and Well-being. - : CoAction Publishing. - 1748-2623 .- 1748-2631. ; 7, s. Article number 18688-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Suffering and well-being are significant aspects of human existence; in particular, suffering and well-being are important aspects of patients’ experiences following diseases. Increased knowledge about existential dimensions of illness and healthcare experiences may be needed in order to improve care and reduce unnecessary suffering. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to illuminate the phenomenon of suffering experienced in relation to healthcare needs among patients in hospital settings in Sweden. In this study, we used a reflective lifeworld approach. The data were analysed with a focus on meanings. The results describe the essential meaning of the phenomenon of suffering in relation to healthcare needs. The patients were suffering during care-giving when they felt distrusted or mistreated and when their perspective on illness and health was overlooked. Suffering was found to arise due to healthcare actions that neglected a holistic and patient-centred approach to care. Unfortunately, healthcare experiences that cause patients to suffer seem to be something one needs to endure without being critical. The phenomenon can be described as having four constituents: to be mistreated; to struggle for one’s healthcare needs and autonomy; to feel powerless; and to feel fragmented and objectified. The study concludes that there are problems associated with patients experiencing suffering at the hands of healthcare providers, even if this suffering may not have been caused deliberately to the patient. Consequently, conscious improvements are needed to lessen the suffering caused by care-giving, as are strategies that promote more patient-centred care and patient participation.

  • EXPERIMENTAL AND NUMERICAL ANALYSES OF A CONNECTION FOR CLT STRUCTURES
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 2023 World Conference on Timber Engineering (WCTE). - Oslo, Norway : Curran Associates, Inc.. ; , s. 1154-1159
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Although building systems made of cross-laminated timber (CLT) have become common in Sweden in the past 20 years and they have developed rapidly during the same period, steps remain to be taken to simplify the assembly of such systems, especially at construction sites. Current construction methods, however, remain labour-intensive and thus show room for improvement. This paper describes a novel connection for the assembly of building elements made of CLT. Simple and inexpensive, the connection is fairly insensitive to manufacturing tolerances and enables rapid, more efficient construction than the connections for CLT structures currently used. Test results show the excellent strength and stiffness of the connection, which also allows the replacement of numerous fasteners, including nails and screws, with only a single steel rod.

  • Welfare Relationships : Voluntary organisations and local authorities supporting relatives of older people in Sweden
  • 2004
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Sweden is often described as a country with a strong welfare state and little voluntary work. This is as would be expected according to substitution theory, in which extensive welfare systems are assumed to crowd out voluntary activity and thereby limit the potential for voluntary work – there is an inverse relationship between voluntary and statutory activity. A second perspective is welfare pluralism, which is siginified by a purposive duplication of activity by different actors resulting in increased choice for service users. A third perspective is offered by complementarity theory. In this theory, different actors are assumed to have different characteristics, strengths, and weaknesses, which make them suitable for performing different tasks. The purpose of the thesis is to examine the variation in welfare service provision by voluntary organisations and local authorities in Sweden. This includes determining whether there is a statistical association between voluntary and statutory service provision. The thesis also explores the interaction between voluntary organisations and local authorities, that is how they are related in terms of collaboration, competition, support, and influence, and the actors’ own views on roles, responsibilities, motives etc. The thesis is based on two national surveys and on in-depth interviews. Questionnaires were sent to 358 Swedish voluntary organisations in 1999, and 365 organisations in 2002. At the same time points, 80 local authorities were also surveyed. In 2001, 55 representatives of voluntary organisations and local authorities were interviewed.Analysis of the surveys showed no negative relationship between voluntary and statutory service provision cross-sectionally or over time. This was true for both the total amount of activity and when considering individual services. In other words, no evidence for substitution processes was found. Although there was an increase in support for relatives in the period studied and a positive relationship between voluntary and statutory activity in 2002, no positive correlation was found within individual support activities. This means that voluntary and statutory activities tended to be of different kinds at a local level. Only rarely could users choose between different service providers, and the situation could not be characterised as indicative of welfare pluralism. Voluntary organisations and local authorities were described in terms of different characteristics by interviewees, as would be expected by complementarity theory. Nevertheless, there were overlaps in service provision, questioning the validity of complementarity theory with its emphasis on matching of characteristics and tasks. However, at a local level voluntary organisations and local authorities rarely carried out similar tasks. There is thus extensive complementarity at a local level. It is argued that this complementarity is due to the strong ideology that voluntary organisations should complement local authorities, rather than due to the different characteristics of the actors.

  • Pedicle subtraction osteotomy: a comprehensive analysis in 104 patients. Does the cause of deformity influence the outcome?
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Journal of Neurosurgery-Spine. - : Journal of Neurosurgery Publishing Group (JNSPG). - 1547-5654. ; 27:1, s. 56-62
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • OBJECTIVE The clinical outcomes and complications of patients who underwent pedicle subtraction osteotomy (PSO) for various diagnoses were compared. More specifically, the purpose was to identify if outcomes differed between patients with flat-back syndrome after lumbar fusion (FBS-LF) versus patients who underwent surgery for adult spinal deformity (ASD). METHODS A retrospective analysis of 104 patients who underwent a PSO for sagittal plane imbalance was performed. There were 28 patients with FBS-LF and 76 patients with various forms of ASD. Outcome was measured using visual analog scale (VAS)-back, VAS-leg, Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) (range 0-100 for all scales), and EQ-5D scores (range 0-1). Patients also rated their global outcomes as much better, better, unchanged, or worse at follow-up. The minimum follow-up was 1 year (range 1-4 years). Clinical outcomes and complications were compared between the 2 groups of patients. RESULTS The most common level of PSO was L-3 and L-2; 100 single and 4 double PSOs were performed. The average local correction by PSO itself was 27.2 degrees. The sagittal vertical axis (SVA) improved from a mean preoperative value of 74 +/- 23 mm to 49 +/- 20 mm at the final follow-up. The VAS -back, ODI, and EQ:5D scores improved significantly for the entire group by 33, 16, and 0.31 points, respectively. In total, 57% of patients reported that they were "much better" or "better" than before surgery. Preoperatively, as well as postoperatively, the FBS-LF patients reported significantly worse VAS scores.. According to VAS -back results, the ASD group improved by 34 points compared with 29 points in FBS-LF patients. ODI scores were similar between the 2 groups preoperatively but improved significantly more in the ASD group (18 points) compared with the FBS-LF group (13 points). The EQ-5D scores improved from 0.07 to 0.35 in FBS-LF patients, and from 0.21 to 0.56 on average in ASD patients. Similarly, a "much better" or "better" outcome compared with before surgery was reported by 72% of patients in the ASD group compared with 24% of patients in the FBS-LF group (p < 0.001). The overall reoperation rate was 31%: 46% of patients in the FBS-LF group compared with 25% of patients in the ASD group. There were 19 (18%) dural tears, 14 (13.5%) surgical site infections, 12 (11.5%) instances of pseudarthrosis, 15 (14%) proximal junctional failures, and 2 distal junctional failures. The 12 (11%) neurological complications were dominated by partial weakness of hip flexion and knee extension, and all but 2 of these were temporary. CONCLUSIONS PSO is a safe and effective method for correcting sagittal plane imbalance due to multiple etiologies. The authors found patient satisfaction to be high, and health-related quality of life was greatly improved by the procedure in patients with ASD. In contrast, in FBS-LF patients, a suboptimal outcome was observed and the cautious use of PSO seems warranted in this subset of patients.
