  • Academic, social, and financial changes in international students’ lives due to the COVID-19 pandemic
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Nordic Journal of Migration Research. - : Helsinki University Press. - 1799-649X. ; 14:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • During the COVID-19 pandemic, multiple measures were established that influenced international students’ academic, financial, and social activities. Focusing on international students who studied in Finland, we collected quantitative data with an online survey (n = 192) to increase our knowledge of the students’ experiences and to compare the students’ responses based on their level of study. The results indicated that financial difficulties varied significantly between the groups of students, whereas academically and socially, they were more similar. The financial situations of bachelor’s and master’s degree students were more severely affected than were those of exchange students and doctoral researchers. These findings illustrate variations between different groups of international students, even though they are often presented as one single group. Although both heterogeneity and homogeneity were observed between the groups of international students, all displayed academic resilience, in spite of the stress and challenges they experienced.

  • Scaling through the pandemic : an analysis of international students’ experiences
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Policy Futures in Education. - : Sage Publications. - 1478-2103.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In educational research, scales are often presented as the ontological reality of a study. This study problematises this starting point and suggests approaching scales as experienced and epistemically used. Thus, this study asks how international students studying at Finnish universities during the early phase of the COVID-19 pandemic negotiated their experiences using scales and scaling. The analysis was based on the responses (n = 84) to an open-ended question in an online survey. The survey was distributed in the spring of 2020 to international students studying in universities across Finland. We conducted an abductive analysis of how the international students employed scales in their reflections on their lives during the pandemic. Theoretically, we draw from the conceptualisation of scales, which we suggest provides an analytical lens for understanding subjective experiences, and rescaling, which students used in making sense of their experiences. We argue that international students made sense of their everyday lives during the pandemic through scales and rescaling, contributing to their sense of belonging and sense of (in)equality.

  • Vastuuta ja vapautta: Kansainvälisten yliopisto-opiskelijoiden uudelleen muotoutuva opiskeluarki covid-19- pandemian alussa
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Kasvatus. - : Kasvatus. - 0022-927X .- 2737-0658. ; 54, s. 74-87
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Tässä artikkelissa tarkastelemme kansainvälisten yliopisto-opiskelijoiden kokemuksia opiskeluarjen rakentumisesta yliopistotilojen sulkeuduttua covid-19-pandemian myötä keväällä 2020. Koronapandemian alkuajan opiskeluarkea lähestytään sosiomateriaalisesta näkökulmasta tarkastellen opiskeluarjen kietoumia. Tutkimuksen aineistona oli keväällä 2020 tuotetut (n=33) suomalaisissa yliopistoissa opiskelevien kansainvälisten maisterivaiheen opiskelijoiden haastattelut, joita analysoitiin käsitekarttoja hyödyntämällä. Opiskeluarjessa painottui arjen ajallisuuden, materiaalisuuden ja tilallisuuden muutokset, jotka yhdessä muovasivat uudenlaisia opiskelun tila-aikakietoumia. Opiskeluarjen muutokset johtivat opiskelijoiden vastuun ja vapauden lisääntymiseen omien opintojen etenemisestä ja opiskeluarjesta. Koronapandemia toi esiin opiskeluarjen moninaiset ajalliset ja tilalliset todellisuudet.

  • Comparative education in the North: Diversity in unity
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Comparing Times and Spaces : Historical, theoretical and methodological approaches to comparative education. - 9789525401714 ; , s. 31-56
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • “Is there a Nordic block, complete with a Nordic economic model and a special kind of Nordic welfare? Nordic collective security? Nordic values, Nordic sex, Nordic gloom? Undeniably the Nordic countries—the Scandinavian trio of Sweden, Denmark and Norway, plus Finland on the eastern flank and Iceland far north-west in the Atlantic—have a great many things in common. And undeniably the lure of the European Union has been drawing all the Nordics, even stand-offish Norway and Iceland, into an ever tighter embrace of rules and regulations that are bound to have an economically unifying effect. In a generation or so, perhaps, the Nordic five will come more closely together in one big European family. But, this survey will argue, for the next few years they are as likely to stay apart, as they have done since the end of the cold war. Each of them has been following its own particular path. Nordic solidarity? For the moment, forget it”. So summarized Xan Smiley his view of the Nordic countries in the Economist in 1999 . In February 2013 the Nordic Countries are described in the same context as “the next supermodel”, a new model of Nordic capitalism and are heralded in a special report courtesy of the Economist for their pragmatism, which has led to “generous welfare state[s] that [do] not cost the earth” "Unless the points are pushed too hard the two traditions could locally be placed in Denmark (N.F.S. Grundtvig) and Sweden (the construction of the “new Sweden”) respectively. Due to differences like these and others, comparison is absolutely possible among the Nordic countries and history shows that we have been good at learning from each other. The fact remains, however, that difference is importance, raising the question: has time come to put more weight on the North in its entirety as a unit of comparison?"
