    • For the third year, the AHA festival investigates the meeting between art and science in a three-day event at the Chalmers University of Technology hosted by the Department of Architecture and the Department of Physics. An international festival intended to provide enlightening experiences, staging surprises, new thoughts and displaced perspectives that lead to alternative modes of thinking about exploring the world through art and science. We invite scientists (physicists, historians, astronomers, engineers), artists (dancers, musicians, painters, poets, acrobats) who reside in these borderlands and wish to share their vision and work. The key intention is to celebrate both art and science as key knowledge building devices.The first year’s theme ’Embodiment’ (2014) explored the body as our anchor in the world, followed by the 2015 theme on ’Numbers’, a delightful net we cast over the world. This year's theme is ’Uni-verse,’ again a natural consequence of our interest in the relation between art and science. The elemental force that drives science as well as art is curiosity. Come be curious with us! During the festival we have chosen to divide the word universe into three: uni and "-" and verse. Uni means that something is combined into a whole. Verse means that we are turned in a direction, the origin of the word tells us that it is the plow that turns at the end of the field. And the dash "-" is all the spaces and cracks where new discoveries can grow. Art and science unfolds in the gap between what we know and what we want to know.

    • Arkitektur och tekniks årliga studieresa till Schweiz är på många sätt unik. Vi transporterar oss själva genom det vackra alplandskapet och besöker några av landets vackraste broar och byggnader. De vilda bergsmassiven och den förfinade byggnadskulturen väver sig in i varandra under hela vår magiska arkitektursafari. Resan i augusti 2021 blev nästan ett år försenad på grund av pandemin. I stället för en förberedelse av studierna i årskurs 3 blev det en festlig avslutning på kandidattiden på Chalmers. Vid sidan om våra gängse besöksmål, från Robert Maillarts och Jürg Conzetts konstruktioner till Le Corbusier och Peter Zumthors arkitektur, hade vi den här resan ett särskilt fokus på materialen lera, kalk, sten och cement, och på restaurering av broar och byggnader i dessa material.

    • Interest in urban green areas has rapidly increased in recent years as the world becomes increasingly urbanized (see e.g., McDonald, 2008, UN-habitat, 2016). This brings new demands for a deeper understanding of the morphology of green areas in cities that provide us with a range of important ecosystem services (ESS) such as evaporative cooling, water purification, micro climate regulation, recreation and even pollination (MA 2005; Andersson et al., 2007). If we also are to support or even enhance such services, we need to make this knowledge accessible for professionals in urban planning and design. In both regards we see the need to bring the fields of landscape ecology and urban morphology closer to each other. This papers addresses this, taking the ESS pollination as point of departure. It has been acknowledged that besides the amount of green, also connectivity between green areas is important for most of these ESS (Alberti, 2008; Kindleman et al., 2008). The critical issue remains how connections are represented. In this paper we propose an alternative approach inspired by space syntax where we introduce a method to capture urban form and their impact on movement behaviour of bumble bees. A first attempt to do so was discussed by Marcus et al. (2014) but instead of drawing connections using space syntax, we here propose to define the resistance to movement using visibility graph analysis (VGA). The level of visual integration can then be calculated based on the number of visual steps it takes to get from one point to any other point within the system. For species that navigate by sight this can be a rather simple and effective way to measure the cost or resistance to move through an urban landscape. To test the method, observation data on bumble bees collected in 16 sites in Stockholm (Ahrné et al., 2009) are used.

  • URBAN MODELLING AND VISUALIZATION TOOLS FOR URBAN TRANSPORTATION SYSTEMS – EXAMPLES FROM TWO LIVING-LAB PROJECTS IN GOTHENBURG.

    • Abstract:Purpose: Within transport projects there is a growing demand for urban modelling and advanced visualization methods. This paper reflects upon visualizations techniques used in two transdisciplinary projects studying implementation of transport solutions in Gothenburg. Involvement of many stakeholders and efficient dialogue tools were essential to support communication in the transdisciplinary environment. Sendsmart and Go:Smart projects (2012-2014) aimed at developing and testing innovative sustainable solutions for urban transportation with a focus on freight (Sendsmart) and passenger transport (Go:Smart). They were developed as an important municipal attempt to create better conditions for sustainable urban travel in the city. Research Approach: Both projects turned out to become a living laboratory for visualization implementation and engaged groups of key stakeholders from the academia, industry, city of Gothenburg, and the regional and national organizations. These practice-oriented projects were focused on development of new solutions and testing them in reality. This study presents reflections from a research-by-design process and available rich, documented material from the projects (meeting notes, workshop notes, monthly reports, films). Even if, SendSmart nor GoSmart were not part of municipal planning process, they were focused on early implementation phase of new approaches in the city transport planning. Integration of users was essential and the user perspective was the only one brought into research discourse.Findings and Originality: In both projects methods and tools were developed in forms of demo visualizations and films, simulation models - scenario development and evaluation (decision support systems: Urban Strategy combined with Visum), image supported discussions (Urbania) maps and 2D visualizations as a basis for discussion. These tools are perceived as extremely helpful to support communication in the complex environments and were very useful as an input to the workshops. However, an iterative procedure would have been needed to further let the participants’ opinions and suggestions lead to new visualized concepts. A need to simulate both in macro and micro scale was recognized. Challenges to further deal with are lack of detailed data for traffic simulation in advanced models, problems with different source data aggregation and a high demand for specifically qualified expertise in building simulation models. It is beneficial to put efforts into developing an integrated model for freight and passenger transport within transdisciplinary projects. Research Impact: This paper underlines the necessity for a critical collaborative exchange and research needs to be fostered and disseminated in order to enhance and promote the usable knowledge and application of visualization methods and technologies. Their potential in addressing critical transportation issues of today, as well as promoting innovative approaches to meet society’s transportation needs of the future often requires a discussion within a broader, multidisciplinary context of technology development in the areas of simulation and modellingPractical impact: Paper addresses the importance of using visualization for communication in transportation projects.

  • Socio-ecological transitions of cities: Exploring spatial, ecological and governance dynamics in European cities

    • Europe is in general in a good position for examining dynamics and potential for realizing a positive transition to resilient and sustainable urban areas. Compared to most other continents, the living standards are good, the decision making processes are fairly open and transparent, and the level of knowledge including environmental knowledge is relatively high. We examine five compact cities to unravel what drives their social-ecological transition to resilient urban futures. A meta-analysis of spatial, ecological and governance dynamics reveals that in the face of slow urbanization the European compact cities under study undergo a transition towards eco-city that is the result of five co-evolving drivers: (a) the presence and implantation of strong environmental policy at local and regional level that promotes the preservation of existing green spaces; (b) the capitalizing of governance capacity for urban sustainability in the form of setting urban green plans and deals; (c) the restoration and re-establishment of green urban spaces of different sizes in the cities or simply, creating more green spaces (d) the put forth of green strategies and actions from multiple policy centers and (e) the emerging social niches of community gardens and urban agriculture that restore green in the cities and take over empty or unused spaces. These drivers do not play alone but are stressed with challenges of fair distribution of green in the city and of slow responding policy and governance.

    • Urban landscapes are the everyday environment for the majority of the global population and almost 80 per cent of Europeans live in urban areas. The continuous growth in the number and size of urban areas along with an increasing demand on resources and energy pose great challenges for ensuring human welfare in cities while preventing an increasing loss of biodiversity. The understanding of how urban ecosystems function, provide goods and services for urban dwellers, how they change and what allows and limits their performance, can add to the understanding of ecosystem change and governance in an ever more human-dominated world. This contribution aims at presenting results from the European biodiversa project, "Urban Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services - URBES", that bridges the knowledge gap between urbanization, demand, creation and provisioning of ecosystem services in urban regions, and urban governance and planning. First, we highlight new, highly interdisciplinary concepts for characterizing need and provisioning of ecosystem services (and biodiversity) in urban landscapes and along rural-urban gradients. Second, we introduce new empirical results and integrated analytical tools for investigating urban environments, particularly urban green spaces, for different European cities. Third, we show the implications of both new concepts and analytical tools for urban governance and planning policy currently and in the future.

  • Redefining Urban Development Strategies for Effective and Efficient Future Mobility Solutions

    • The main question of this pre-study is if there is a coherence between future sustainable urban development and urban transportation models. The current rapid development of new technologies will result in new innovative transportation models. To what extent are they compatible with urban models? The population and urban growth change urban mobility in space and stress the word infrastructure. Urban transport is one of the major challenges on a local, regional and national level, where decision and planning processes in cities are extremely complex. A polycentric model of growth to avoid pressures on the urban centres, has been accompanied by developing transport networks along existing corridors. The problems however remain: shortage of land, growing traffic congestion, pollution, etc. This aims to define new innovative urban transport solutions with a larger flexibility in response to the growing dynamic urban development. Is there a paradox between urban development along existing corridors and the idea of flexibility of mobility? New technologies and new transportation modes are already accessible. However, alternative city structures for new transportation system models are not widely discussed in the city development strategies. This pre-study is based in Gothenburg as a case city. Research outputs are presented as following: I. Historical perspective. Description of how urban forms and land use changes as a consequence of new transportation technologies; II. How will different new innovative transportation systems (i.e. private, mixed, and public) affect a) accessibility to destinations for different socio-economic groups b) distribution of goods?

  • The uptake of the ecosystem services concept in planning discourses of European and American cities

    • Ecosystem services (ES) are gaining increasing attention as a promising concept to more actively consider and plan for the varied benefits of the urban environment. Yet, to have an impact on decision- making, the concept must spread from academia to practice. To understand how ES have been taken up in planning discourses we conducted a cross-case comparison of planning documents in Berlin, New York, Salzburg, Seattle and Stockholm. We found: (1) explicit references to the ES concept were primarily in documents from Stockholm and New York, two cities in countries that entered into ES discourses early. (2) Implicit references and thus potential linkages between the ES concept and planning discourses were found frequently among all cities, especially in Seattle. (3) The thematic scope, represented by 21 different ES, is comparably broad among the cases, while cultural services and habitat provision are most frequently emphasized. (4) High-level policies were shown to promote the adoption of the ES concept in planning. We find that the ES concept holds potential to strengthen a holistic consideration of urban nature and its benefits in planning. We also revealed potential for further development of ES approaches with regard to mitigation of environmental impacts and improving urban resilience.
