  • Information sharing for sales and operations planning: Contextualized solutions and mechanisms
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Journal of Operations Management. - : Wiley. - 1873-1317 .- 0272-6963. ; 52, s. 15-29
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We develop actionable design propositions for collaborative sales and operations planning (S&OP) based on the observation of contexts in which benefits are generated — or are absent — from retail information sharing for a manufacturer. An information sharing pilot project in a real-life setting of two product manufacturers and one retailer was designed. The project resulted in one manufacturer, serving a retailer from its local factory, developing a process for collaborative S&OP, while the other manufacturer serving a retailer from more distant regional factories abandoned the process. The evaluation of the outcomes experienced by the two manufacturers allows us to examine contexts in fine-grained detail and explain why introducing information sharing in the S&OP processes produce — or fail to produce — benefits. The paper contributes to the supply chain information sharing literature by presenting a field tested and evolved S&OP design for non-standard demand situations, and by a contextual analysis of the mechanisms that produce the benefits of retailer collaboration and information sharing in the S&OP process.

  • Purchasing category management: Providing integration between purchasing and other business functions
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Procurement Management. - 1753-8432 .- 1753-8440. ; 11:5, s. 533-550
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Organising the purchasing and supply management (PSM) function has been changing due to the increasingly strategic role of the function requiring integration with other business functions and the entire supply chain. One solution is to organise PSM into categories, a common practice in today's manufacturing organisations. In this paper we explore how purchasing category management (PCM) affects cross-functional integration. We analysed purchasing category management practices through in-depth case-studies in four manufacturing firms in two types of industry. Our research contributes to the purchasing and supply management research in two ways. First, it addresses the role of purchasing category management in organising PSM in large manufacturing companies. Second, it elaborates on purchasing categories providing integration between purchasing and other business functions, suggesting how different mechanisms are needed for different contexts.

  • Unveiling the intellectual structure and evolution of external resource management research: Insights from a bibliometric study
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of Business Research. - : Elsevier BV. - 0148-2963. ; 97, s. 141-159
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the current hyper-competitive economy, it is increasingly important to understand how firms can and should access and leverage external resources, such as customer knowledge or supply-chain partners’ capabilities. In this paper, we report the results of bibliometric analyses on external resource management (ERM) research in nine representative journals, and elaborate the underlying patterns and dynamics in this relatively young research area. A total of 1290 articles ranging from year 2000 to 2015 were analyzed with text-mining and visualization methods. We found that the annual number of ERM publications is steadily increasing, and identified and described four distinct research clusters focusing on integration & operational effectiveness, innovation & value creation, inter-organizational relationships, and knowledge transfer & learning. The identification of research clusters and key works and authors in this multidisciplinary research field can assist future research in better positioning their studies and finding the key references across disciplinary silos.

  • Can supplier innovations substitute for internal R&D? A multiple case study from an absorptive capacity perspective
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Journal of Purchasing and Supply Management. - : Elsevier BV. - 1478-4092. ; 23:4, s. 242-255
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Prior literature suggests that significant internal R&D resources are needed to leverage suppliers for innovation and that external knowledge sources can be used to complement the internal knowledge base. Based on the analysis of four inbound open innovation projects at Fortum, a multinational energy utility company, we argue that companies with low R&D intensity may adopt an alternative approach which aims at substituting – not merely complementing – internal R&D with external innovations. We adopt the absorptive capacity perspective while investigating the cases and focus on four distinct sub-capabilities: acquisition, assimilation, transformation, and exploitation. We find that the substitution approach consists of short-term research on new technological areas in order to gain the ability to identify and evaluate alternative technologies, as well as joint business models and operations based on complementary capabilities between the parties. The cases also reveal that the innovation process requires significant collaboration and the buying company’s supplier management capabilities improve the success of inbound open innovation projects of this type.

  • Contingency between S&OP design and planning environment
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Physical Distribution and Logistics Management. - : Emerald Group Publishing Limited. - 0960-0035 .- 1758-664X. ; 45:8, s. 747-773
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to understand how companies design sales and operations planning (S&OP) contingent on the planning environment (PE). Design/methodology/approach – On the basis of the literature, the paper creates an analytical framework identifying the main constructs related to the PE and S&OP design, which is the basis for gathering and analysing qualitative data from eight cases in the food industry. The findings highlight the relations between S&OP and the PE, and are used for generating three propositions. Findings – Responding to the complex and uncertain PE, the companies set up S&OP on a stockkeeping unit (SKU) level, with the possibility of re-planning and a flexible planning horizon, thus differing from what has generally been suggested in the literature. In addition, the companies are aligning the inputs, activities, and outcomes of the S&OP process to the PE. Particularly important environmental contingencies are uncertainty connected to demand and supply, frequent product launches, and production network complexity. Product-related variables have a lower impact on the S&OP design. Research limitations/implications – The present study is limited to one industry only and a comparison between industries with larger data sets would be valuable in future studies. The study selected cases based on their S&OP maturity; further studies need to explore the effect of the alignment of S&OP and the PE on the planning performance. Originality/value – In the literature, S&OP is presented as a generic process with a strict formal design that is equal for all companies. The study provides insights into how companies adjust S&OP according to the PE.

  • Sales and operations planning: challenges and opportunities for industrial food producers
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 20th EurOMA conference, Dublin, June 7-12, 2013.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper explores how the use of sales and operations planning (S&OP) may deal with the challenges set by the planning environment by investigating S&OP at four Scandinavian industrial food producers. Variables connected to the product and market, e.g. perishability, customer service elements and supply uncertainty were identified as particularly critical for the S&OP process. It was found that there is a great potential for S&OP in the food industry, foremost to cope with the imbalances between demand and supply and to create prerequisites for a stable production process.

  • Acquisition of supply market intelligence – An information processing perspective
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of Purchasing and Supply Management. - : Elsevier BV. - 1478-4092. ; 26:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The capability to develop and sustain superior knowledge of markets and supply chains, or supply market intelligence (SMI), is an important element in increasing the strategic relevance of purchasing and supply management (PSM). This study draws on information processing theory (IPT) to shed light on how firms acquire SMI. In particular, the study aims to identify the drivers and mechanisms of information processing in SMI acquisition and to explore how the two constructs are related. Our findings emerged from an abductive multiple case study including 22 SMI tasks in eight case companies operating in various manufacturing industries. We find that the drivers of information processing needs in SMI acquisition are related either to uncertainty or equivocality. Uncertainty describes a situation in which decision-makers may be ignorant of a variable's value while equivocality describes a situation in which they may be ignorant of the variable's existence. We identify four structural mechanisms and three information technology mechanisms for information processing in the SMI context. We also find that equivocality seems to trump uncertainty in determining the use of the identified SMI acquisition mechanisms. In addition to elaborating IPT in the SMI context and exploring the theoretical foundations of SMI, we offer practitioners a framework for supporting the design of SMI practices in procurement organisations.

  • Towards differentiated information sharing in supplier relations: Contextual considerations of information utilisation
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the annual EurOMA conference 2017.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • How to share and use information in a supply chain to improve operations planning and control (OPC) in the automotive industry is explored from the viewpoint of suppliers. The purpose is to investigate how context characteristics from portfolio models can be used for information sharing purposes and explore how intended usage of shared information at a supplier is connected to context. Case research of five suppliers revealed context characteristics that define the intention to use shared supply chain information. Information sharing differentiation through supplier relations clustering is presented as propositions and can be empirically tested in further research.
