  • Factors Influencing Organic Food Purchase Intention in Developing Countries and the Moderating Role of Knowledge

    • The current study focuses on understanding the factors (subjective norms (SNs), personal attitude, and perceived behaviour control (PBC)) that influence consumer purchase intention regarding organic food from the theory of planned behaviour and health consciousness as an additional factor in Tanzania and Kenya. It further explains the role of knowledge as a moderating variable in organic food purchase intention. A total of 331 responses from Tanzania and 350 responses from Kenya were obtained. Confirmatory factor analysis was applied for validation, and results were analysed using structural equation modeling. SNs, personal attitudes, and health consciousness were found to be significant predictors of organic purchase intention in both countries. Furthermore, findings show that knowledge positively moderates the relationship among SNs, personal attitude, health consciousness, and organic food purchase intention. However, PBC was found to be a weak influencer on consumer purchase intention in Kenya, and no knowledge interaction between PBC and consumer purchase intention in Tanzania was found. The current study theoretically contributes to the literature by introducing the moderating role of knowledge in the relationship. The results show that knowledge interaction increases the effects of the majority of predictors after being introduced in the relationship. Finally, this study provides an understanding of consumers' perspective regarding their intention to purchase organic foods, which will help stakeholders, such as marketers, retailers, and producers, to achieve marketing strategies for the development of these products.

  • The Need of a Structured Tilapia Breeding Program in Tanzania to Enhance Aquaculture Production: A Review

    • Breeding programs are crucial for boosting productivity and increase sustainability of aquaculture. Over years, Tanzania has witnessed fluctuation in its capture fisheries production from 320,900 to 375, 535 and back to 362,595 metric tonnes in the years 2000, 2005 and 2016, respectively (URT 2016). The declining trend in fish production has made fish supply in the country unstable and conversely, increased the demand for fishes to about 730,000 metric tonnes in 2017. However, the local aquaculture production has not increased accordingly. Tanzania is importing fish mainly from Asia to meet its increased demand. In 2017, a total of 2,055,721 kg of frozen tilapia were imported from China and Mozambique (URT 2017). The introduction of exotic fish species in Tanzania should be carefully managed because introduced species have many negative impacts to the indigenous species. Tanzania should have a moderate scale tilapia breeding program that will produce good quality fingerlings at affordable price for smallholder fish farmers. The availability of reliable good quality fingerlings is key to improve aquaculture production in the country. Among 17 existing hatcheries, only 12 hatcheries are active, however these hatcheries are not performing well due to low investment and technology leading to the production of low quantity and quality fingerlings. The need for a structured sustainable Tilapia breeding program with bio secured and reliable hatcheries to enhance aquaculture production in Tanzania is given in this review.

  • Towards a sustainable tilapia breeding program in Tanzania

    • A structured breeding program is an important step towards sustainable tilapia aquaculture in Tanzania. The aim of the thesis was to generate baseline information for the establishment of tilapia breeding program in Tanzania. In the first study of this thesis we determined the genetic diversity between and within local and exotic Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) and Rufiji strains (Oreochromis urolepis urolepis) in Tanzania. Strains of FETA, Victoria, Igunga and TAFIRI had low genetic variation ranging from 0.057 to 0.1 while Kunduchi, Karanga and Ruhila showed highest genetic diversity from 0.214 to 0.212. Strong genetic differentiation was revealed between Karanga and the closely related strains of FETA, Lake Victoria, and Igunga with values from 0.533 to 0.548. STRUCTURE analysis revealed highly admixture among Karanga, Kunduchi, and Ruhila strains while FETA, Victoria, Igunga and TAFIRI showed no admixture. Higher genetic variation was also revealed among Rufiji strains compared to exotic and local Nile tilapia strains. High FST values (0.6- 0.8) were observed between Rufiji strains and the local or exotic Nile tilapia strains. The second part of this thesis based on a common garden experiment where the different strains of tilapia were compared in two environments with differing salinity. Differences in growth performance for all body traits were significant among Nile tilapia strains (P< 0.001) and strains ranked differently across the two environments. In freshwater environment, Karanga strain ranked first while TAFIRI strain ranked last. Regarding brackish water environment, Igunga strain was ranked first and the Victoria strain ranked last. Heritability estimates for harvest weight were low in both freshwater (0.10) and brackish water (0.09) environments compared to weight at tagging. Genetic correlations were low (0.35) for harvest weight and families ranked differently across the two environments indicating the existence of substantial GxE. Our results suggest that some strains are better suited than others to form the basis of a selective breeding program of Nile tilapia in Tanzania. Base population for the breeding program needs to strike the right balance between picking the best performing strains and having a broad genetic basis. Caution though is needed due to the high GxE across the tested environments.
