  • Solving stochastic optimal reactive power dispatch using an Adaptive Beluga Whale optimization considering uncertainties of renewable energy resources and the load growth
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Ain Shams Engineering Journal. - : ELSEVIER. - 2090-4479 .- 2090-4495. ; 15:7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The electrical system performance can be improved considerably by controlling the reactive power flow in the system. The reactive power control can be achieved by optimal reactive power dispatch (ORPD) problem solution and optimal integration of the FACTS devices. With high penetration of renewable energy sources (RESs) and the load growth, the ORPD solution became a challenging and a complex task due to the stochastic nature of the RERs and the load growth. In this regard, the aim of this paper is to solve the stochastic optimal reactive power dispatch (SORPD) with optimal inclusion of PV units, wind turbines and the unified power flow controller (UPFC) under uncertainties of the load growth and the generated powers. An Adaptive Beluga Whale Optimization (ABWO) is proposed for solving the SORPD which is based on the Fitness-Distance Balance Selection (FDBS) strategy and the territorial solitary males' strategy of the Mountain Gazelle Optimizer. The proposed ABWO is tested on IEEE 30-bus system and a comparison with other optimization techniques for solving the ordinary ORPD is presented for validating the proposed ABWO. The obtained results reveal that the TEPL is reduced from 5.3168 MW to 3.97985 MW with optimal integration of the RERs and UPFC. Likewise, the TEVD is reduced from 0.1794p.u. to 0.10689p.u. and the TVSI is decreased from 0.1289p.u. to 0.0476p.u.

  • Acetylcholinesterase Inhibitory Potential of Various Sesquiterpene Analogues for Alzheimer's Disease Therapy
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Biomolecules. - : MDPI AG. - 2218-273X. ; 11:3
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a gradually growing irreversible illness of the brain that almost affects every fifth person (aged > 80 years) in the world. World Health Organization (WHO) also revealed that the prevalence of this disease will enhance (upto double) significantly upto 2030. The poor cholinergic transmission at the synapse is considered to be one of the main reasons behind the progression and occurrence of this disorder. Natural inhibitors of acetylcholine (ACh) such as galanthamine and rivastigmine are used commercially in the treatmentof AD. The biomolecules such assesquiterpenes, possess a great structural diversity and are responsible for a plethora of pharmacological properties. The potential of various sesquiterpenes as anticholinesterase has been reviewed in this article. For this purpose, the various databases, mainly PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science were investigatedwith different keywords such as “sesquiterpenes+acetylcholinesterase” and “sesquiterpenes+cholinesterase+inhibitors” in the surveyed time frame (2010–2020). A vast literature was evident in the last decade, which affirms the potential of various sesquiterpenes in the improvement of cholinergic transmission by inhibiting the AChE. After data analysis, it was found that 12 compounds out of a total of 58 sesquiterpenes were reported to possess IC50 < 9 μM and can be considered as potential candidates for the improvement of learning and memory. Sesquiterpene is an important category of terpenoids, found to possess a large spectrum of biological activities. The outcome of the review clearly states that sesquiterpenes (such as amberboin, lipidiol, etc.) from herbs could offer fresh, functional compounds for possible prevention and treatment of AD.

  • A Modified Artificial Hummingbird Algorithm for solving optimal power flow problem in power systems
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Energy Reports. - : ELSEVIER. - 2352-4847. ; 11, s. 982-1005
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Optimal power flow (OPF) problem solution is a crucial task for the operators and decision makers to assign the best setting of the system components to obtain the most economic, environmental, and technical suitable state. Artificial Hummingbird Algorithm is a recent optimization algorithm that has been applied to solving several optimization problems. In this paper, a Modified Artificial Hummingbird Algorithm (MAHA) is proposed for improving the performance of the orignal Artificial Hummingbird Algorithm as well as effectivelly solve the OPF problem. The proposed MAHA is based on improving the searching capability by boosting the exploitation using the bandwidth motion around the best solution, while the exploration process is improved using the Levy flight distribution motion and the fitness-distance balance selection. This modified version helps overcome issues such as stagnation, premature convergence, and a propensity for local optima when tackling complex, nonlinear, and non-convex optimization problems like OPF. In order to confirm the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm, a series of tests are conducted on 23 standard benchmark functions, including CEC2020. The resulting outcomes are then compared to those obtained using other algorithms such as fitness-distance balance selection-based stochastic fractal search (FDBSFS), antlion optimizer (ALO), whale optimization algorithm (WOA), sine-cosine algorithm (SCA), fitness-distance balance and learning based artificial bee colony (FDB-TLABC), and traditional artificial hummingbird algorithm (AHA).The proposed algorithm is evaluated by solving the OPF problem with multiple objective functions on the IEEE 30-bus system. These objectives include fuel cost, fuel cost with valve loading effects, power losses, emissions, and voltage profile. Additionally, the algorithm's effectiveness is further assessed by testing it on single objective functions using medium and large-scale IEEE 57 and 118-bus networks. The results obtained by the proposed MAHA demonstrate its power and superiority for solving the OPF problem as well as the standard benchmark functions , surpassing the performance of other reported techniques.

  • Potential Role of Curcumin and Its Nanoformulations to Treat Various Types of Cancers
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Biomolecules. - : MDPI AG. - 2218-273X. ; 11:3
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Cancer is a major burden of disease globally. Each year, tens of millions of people are diagnosed with cancer worldwide, and more than half of the patients eventually die from it. Significant advances have been noticed in cancer treatment, but the mortality and incidence rates of cancers are still high. Thus, there is a growing research interest in developing more effective and less toxic cancer treatment approaches. Curcumin (CUR), the major active component of turmeric (Curcuma longa L.), has gained great research interest as an antioxidant, anticancer, and anti-inflammatory agent. This natural compound shows its anticancer effect through several pathways including interfering with multiple cellular mechanisms and inhibiting/inducing the generation of multiple cytokines, enzymes, or growth factors including IκB kinase β (IκKβ), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), signal transducer, and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3), cyclooxygenase II (COX-2), protein kinase D1 (PKD1), nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB), epidermal growth factor, and mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK). Interestingly, the anticancer activity of CUR has been limited primarily due to its poor water solubility, which can lead to low chemical stability, low oral bioavailability, and low cellular uptake. Delivering drugs at a controlled rate, slow delivery, and targeted delivery are other very attractive methods and have been pursued vigorously. Multiple CUR nanoformulations have also been developed so far to ameliorate solubility and bioavailability of CUR and to provide protection to CUR against hydrolysis inactivation. In this review, we have summarized the anticancer activity of CUR against several cancers, for example, gastrointestinal, head and neck, brain, pancreatic, colorectal, breast, and prostate cancers. In addition, we have also focused on the findings obtained from multiple experimental and clinical studies regarding the anticancer effect of CUR in animal models, human subjects, and cancer cell lines.

  • Synthesis, Optical, Magnetic and Thermodynamic Properties of Rocksalt Li1.3Nb0.3Mn0.4O2 Cathode Material for Li-Ion Batteries
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Crystals. - : MDPI. - 2073-4352. ; 11:7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Since the discovery of the reversible intercalation of lithium-ion materials associated with promising electrochemical properties, lithium-containing materials have attracted attention in the research and development of effective cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries. Despite various studies on synthesis, and electrochemical properties of lithium-based materials, fairly little fundamental optical and thermodynamic studies are available in the literature. Here, we report on the structure, optical, magnetic, and thermodynamic properties of Li-excess disordered rocksalt, Li1.3Nb0.3Mn0.4O2 (LNMO) which was comprehensively studied using powder X-ray diffraction, transient absorption spectroscopy, magnetic susceptibility, and low-temperature heat capacity measurements. Charge carrier dynamics and electron-phonon coupling in LNMO were studied using ultra-fast laser spectroscopy. Magnetic susceptibility and specific heat data are consistent with the onset of long-range antiferromagnetic order at the Neel temperatures of 6.5 (1.5) K. The effective magnetic moment of LNMO is found to be 3.60 mu B. The temperature dependence of the inverse magnetic susceptibility follows the Curie-Weiss law in the high-temperature region and shows negative values of the Weiss temperature 52 K (3), confirming the strong AFM interactions.

  • Ingår i: Bioanalysis. - 1757-6180 .- 1757-6199. ; 2:2, s. 197-205
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Microextraction by packed sorbent (MEPS) is used as an online sample-preparation method. The determination of local anesthetics lidocaine, ropivacaine and bupivacaine directly in human blood was performed using MEPS online with LC-MS/MS. Results: The range of the calibration curves in whole blood was 10-10000 nmol/l. The lower limit of quantification was set to 10.0 nmol/l. The accuracy of the quality control samples ranged from 85 to 97%. The interday precision of the studied analytes was within the range 1-5%. The regression correlation coefficient (r(2)) was over 0.995 for all runs. The present method is rapid, reliable and robust and may be used for therapeutic drug monitoring of studied analytes in whole blood. Conclusion: This assay allows the analysis of drugs in human blood directly. Sample preparation is simple and automated. The assay reduced the handling time and the cost, and could handle small volumes of whole blood samples (25 mu l).

  • Knowledge and Awareness of Algerian Students about Cervical Cancer, HPV and HPV Vaccines : A Cross-Sectional Study
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Vaccines. - : MDPI AG. - 2076-393X. ; 10:9
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Cervical cancer is one of the most recurrent and dangerous female cancers in Algeria and worldwide. It is mainly caused by human papillomaviruses (HPV), which can induce other cancers as well. Although it can be fatal, cervical cancer is one of the most preventable and manageable cancers. While HPV vaccination is the key weapon to win the battle against this pathology, it is still not approved in Algeria. Therefore, we set up a cross-sectional survey to assess the knowledge and awareness of students from Algerian universities concerning cervical cancer and HPV and to understand their attitudes towards HPV vaccination. The results reveal that, out of 715 students, the majority of students were aware of cervical cancer (84.6%). However, only 46.2% of students had heard about HPV. Furthermore, willingness to get the HPV vaccine was estimated at 26.7% among students with prior knowledge of HPV, and 21.5% of these students claimed to be willing to pay to get the HPV vaccine if available. Nevertheless, HPV vaccine hesitancy was estimated at 37.5% among the students aware of HPV. The main causes of HPV vaccine reluctance were: complacency (30.6%), refusal of vaccination in general (20.2%) and belief in the rarity of HPV-induced infections in Algeria (19.4%). Moreover, the embrace of vaccine conspiracy beliefs among students were significantly related with their HPV vaccine rejection. Overall, these findings encourage the establishment of a social education policy concerning the fight against HPV-induced cancers, particularly that of the cervix, and the implementation of a national HPV vaccination program targeting young people.
