  • Circular Strategies in the Swedish Furniture Industry – A Business Modelling Approach
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Advances in Transdisciplinary Engineering. - 2352-751X .- 2352-7528. ; 52, s. 552-563
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The interest in circularity and circular strategies is increasing in the furniture industry. Wood is a climate-smart and sustainable material, partly because it has many environmental advantages compared to other materials such as plastic or metal, partly because it is a highly renewable material. Today, the technical lifespan of wood products such as furniture is not fully utilized. Today, the technical lifespan of wood products such as furniture is not fully utilized, which could be explored through circular strategies. By extending the life of products, components, and materials, the environmental impact could be significantly reduced. However, several challenges have been identified that hinder the establishment of circular strategies. Inconsistent policies and obstructive legislation, high initial costs and long payback periods, low consumer awareness, and lack of collaboration in the value chain are examples of main challenges. The research question addressed in this paper is How to facilitate the circular development of the Swedish furniture industry by promoting circular business models? This paper discusses the barriers and drivers of circularity with specific focus on the characteristics of the furniture industry in the Swedish context. A conceptual approach for establishing circular strategies in the furniture industry based on the 10R model, the business model canvas, and the product-service system approach is proposed. The approach facilitates the identification of relevant circular strategies that can be developed into circular business models. The paper concludes that circular strategies and business models entail positive economic, environmental, and social sustainability impacts for customers, companies, as well as on the society, but to achieve the benefits, organizational and technical solutions addressing the barriers on organizational, industry, and societal level must be developed. Circular business models are a way to overcome several of the barriers while promoting industrial and value chain collaboration.

  • Information Needs of Gravel Road Stakeholders
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Infrastructures. - : MDPI. - 2412-3811. ; 7:12
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Within any ecosystem, information sharing is essential. In this paper, the Swedish gravel road ecosystem is studied, where information plays a crucial role for the effective management of operations and maintenance. However, efficient information sharing is not enabled due to the lack of appropriate information systems. For addressing this issue, this paper intends to elicit information needs of gravel road stakeholders to support the design of a cloud-based information system. The main purpose is to explore the information needs of stakeholders within the Swedish gravel road ecosystem. Data were collected through in-depth semi-structured interviews with 11 participants representing key stakeholders in the ecosystem. Template analysis was used for analyzing the interview results. The major findings were a set of information needs covering road identification and condition, weather conditions, accessibility and traffic, maintenance policy, and sensor data. The results form a comprehensive information model for the further development of a cloud-based gravel road management system that would contribute to increased traffic safety and comfort, lower maintenance and management costs, and better decision-making abilities.

  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Smart Innov. Syst. Technol.. - Cham : Springer Science and Business Media Deutschland GmbH. - 9783030577445 - 9783030577452 ; , s. 621-629
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Efficient management of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) projects is a crucial factor since on many occasions they fail to meet the expected demands and requirements of the different stakeholders. It is well known that poor project management, like inadequate risk management and inadequate project planning, is one of the main reasons for ICT project failure. In addition, with the emergence of the new ICTs such as the Internet of Things, cloud computing, and big data the digitalisation of the maintenance domain has become even more complex. It is, therefore, essential to revisit standard processes when carrying out software development projects for the domain of interest. A broad selection of software development methodologies exists today. However, these are general-purpose development approaches, and it is, therefore, crucial to have an understanding of the best options and best practices of the existent methodologies for context-specific development projects. Thus, the authors present a literature review of ICT project methodologies and later discuss these findings taking into consideration the characteristics of the domain of interest. Based on this, an ICT project management methodology suitable for the Industrial maintenance domain is suggested. © 2020, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

  • Information System Requirements Elicitation for Gravel Road Maintenance : A Stakeholder Mapping Approach
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Advances in Asset Management and Condition Monitoring. Smart Innovation, Systems and Technologies. - Cham : Springer. - 9783030577445 - 9783030577452 ; , s. 377-387
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Gravel road maintenance is a complex endeavour comprising physical, technical and social aspects that have to be considered, and resources to be coordinated. The maintenance requirements are affected by weather conditions, geography, and traffic frequency, but also by the physical properties of the road and the previous maintenance performance. The physical properties and maintenance requirements are area dependent; in Northern Europe, ground frost, for instance, is a problem, while flooding is a problem in East Asia. Understanding the specific context-dependent variables is therefore important when designing a maintenance information system. In this paper, the maintenance information system requirements are identified focusing on the Swedish gravel road ecosystem. The system elicitation process is crucial to be able to specify the requirements of the future system and its users, and in this paper, a stakeholders’ approach is utilized. Different stakeholders are described, including their maintenance related needs, information needs, and roles in the maintenance system. The interdependencies between different stakeholders are also illustrated in an ecosystem diagram. From these descriptions, requirements for computerized maintenance management systems are elicited, and main users are identified. User scenarios are thereafter illustrated using the User Case technique.

    • The educational phenomena studied in this paper is remote-controlled physical laboratory environments and their applicability in upper secondary school physics education. In order to gain a better understanding of the situation and needs regarding laboratory activities in the upper secondary school, eight physics teachers were interviewed at six different schools. This revealed that the resources for laboratory activities vary between schools and may be inconsistent with the Swedish National Agency for Education curriculum. Furthermore, 165 upper secondary school students answered a questionnaire survey regarding subject preferences, program choices, views on technology and self-ability, and approach to technology and technology-related situations. The acquired knowledge provides a basis concerning the needs and conditions of teaching and learning within the subject of physics. This new knowledge motivates the development of the Flipped laboratory concept that is introduced in this paper, based on remote-controlled physical laboratories, for upper secondary school. © 2021, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

  • Faculty experiences in interdisciplinary programs : opportunities and challenges
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 14th International CDIO Conference. - Kanazawa, Japan : Kanazawa Institute of Technology. - 9784906122530
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Changes in the business environment (such as shorter product lifecycles, globalization, and digitalization) while contributing to a sustainable development, have formed new conditions for companies and organizations. In this new situation, problems encountered cannot be answered within a single discipline. Interdisciplinary programs where students from different disciplines interact in learning and knowledge creation is a way to meet these changes in society. An interdisciplinary program also requires interaction on staff level: Meaningful collaboration brings together expertise from different disciplines so the fundamentals of a given discipline are clarified, and the connections to other disciplines are described, reaching a synergy effect by utilizing the strengths of each area. This, however, puts demands on the curriculum design and on the interaction of the teachers. This paper explores the teachers’ perspective of an interdisciplinary program at Linnaeus University. The program is a 2-year master program entitled “Innovation through business, engineering and design”, recruiting students from the engineering, business and design disciplines. The teaching staff represents different subject areas, and the teachers interact in an interdisciplinary mode in the first year, while the second year mainly contains disciplinary courses. In two focus group interviews, teachers were asked about opportunities and challenges in participating in the interdisciplinary program, as well as their view and how interdisciplinarity is considered in the program. The purpose of the paper is to identify how teachers perceive teaching in an interdisciplinary program as well as to distinguish perceived opportunities and challenges for teachers to participate in interdisciplinary programs. This paper concludes that teachers perceive interdisciplinary learning to take place in the project context, where students come from different disciplines work together to solve a complex real-life assignment. Moreover, the hindrances appear to outweigh the possibilities in participating in an interdisciplinary program. Amongst challenges the teachers perceive lack of resources, such as appropriate learning environments, required competence, and unclear decision channels.

  • Partners in maintenance : possibilities in using partnering-based maintenance contracts for Swedish railway
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Asset Intelligence through Integration and Interoperability and Contemporary Vibration Engineering Technologies. - Cham : Springer. - 9783319957104 - 9783319957111 ; , s. 267-276
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Traditionally, procurement of maintenance has been based on fixed price on defined work. These types of contract forms can lead to negotiations on everything not included in the price, which may result in delays and a sense of distrust when all parties primarily look after themselves. Recently, forms for cooperation based on mutual trust and fairness for all parties have been developed; partnering. Partnering is characterized by common objectives and project organization, and risk analysis. The project is created and operated in cooperation with customers, contractors, suppliers and consultants. Transparency is a cornerstone of partnering and openness is what mainly differentiates partnering from traditional contractor projects. The Swedish railway uses traditional and very detailed contracting principles. This leads to several problems, such as lack of information and knowledge transfer between parties and life cycle phases, and no incentives for quality and productivity improvements. Is applying the concept of partnering for railway maintenance a solution to these problems? If so, why is the concept not already commonly applied and what are the barriers? This paper introduces the concept of partnering and reviews current research within the area. Thereafter, the possibilities in using partnering-based maintenance in Swedish railway are discussed.

  • A Novel Condition Monitoring Procedure for Early Detection of Copper Corrosion Problems in Oil-Filled Electrical Transformers
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Energies. - : MDPI. - 1996-1073. ; 14:14
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The negative impacts of catastrophic fire and explosion accidents due to copper corrosion problems of oil-filled electrical transformers are still in the spotlight due to a lack of effective methods for early fault detection. To address this gap, a condition monitoring (CM) procedure that can detect such problems in the initial stage is proposed in this paper. The suggested CM procedure is based on identified measurable variables, which are the relevant by-products of the corrosion reaction, and utilizes an Early Fault Diagnosis (EFD) model to detect and solve the copper corrosion problems. The EFD model includes a fault trend chart that can track a fault progression during the useful life of transformers. The purpose of this paper is to verify and validate the effectiveness of the suggested CM procedure by an empirical study in a power plant. The result of applying this procedure was early detection of copper corrosion problems in two transformers with suspected copper corrosion propagation from a total of 84. The corrective action was adding an optimized amount of a passivator, an anticorrosion additive, to suppress the corrosion reaction at the correct time. The main conclusion of this study is the importance of early detection of transformer faults to avoid the negative impacts on societal, company, and individual levels.
