- This article gives an example of how visual data can be used as an educational aid in the context of language revitalisation. Here the language for presenting the use of visual data in interactive learning is Noghay, a small Kipchak Turkic language spoken in the Northern Caucasus. Noghay is relatively close to Mishar Tatar, a variant of Tatar spoken in the Volga region and in the Tatar diaspora of the northern Baltic Sea region.Today the use of Noghay is rapidly decreasing, as a growing number of children and young people prefer to speak Russian, which is the socially dominant language. The transmission of the language from one generation to another is also endangered by migration to cities and resulting bilingual situations, where children are not forced to actively speak Noghay. Elderly persons however still prefer Noghay to Russian, and children could be motivated by contact with the older generation to activate their knowledge of the family language.The purpose of using visual data in reawakening a language is to trigger linguistic memories of the community’s heritage language in young bilingual children, which they do not use actively or in their everyday life. We assume that visual data, especially photos depicting realistic situations from their community life, are well suited to stimulate emotional attention and elicit memories of situations in which the heritage language is preferably used. Our approach combines materials gathered during field research and from language and cultural documentation with methods mainly drawn from pedagogy and linguistics.

Wiesbaden: Harrassowitz. i-vii, 1–342.Some sequences of verbs can display systematic ambiguities in meaning. Accent patterns are among the means for disambiguating them. The volume presents a comprehensive analysis of ambiguous verb sequences and ways of teasing them apart, an issue that has never before been addressed in the typological literature. It consists of seventeen contributions focusing on data from the Transeurasian languages Turkic, Japanese and Korean, and a Tungusic variety. The studies demonstrate strong typological similarities between these languages.The term “verb sequence” is used to refer to any contiguous sequence of two or more verbs. A structural ambiguity arises when two or more different readings can be assigned to the same sequence. For instance, a sequence of two verbs may be understood as two predicates describing consecutive events, or as a single predicate consisting of a lexical verb followed by an auxiliary verb. This latter type can display further ambiguity between actionality and viewpoint-aspect readings.The introductory chapter succinctly presents Lars Johanson’s theoretical framework and terminology, which are applied by the authors. Alexandra Y. Aikhenvald reviews verb sequences from a broad typological perspective. Martine Robbeets studies the coincidence of intraterminal and postterminal readings in certain converb constructions across the Transeurasian languages. Ten papers deal with Turkic varieties such as Turkish dialects, a Volga-Turkic variety of the 17th century, Kazakh, Yakut, Dolgan, Siberian Turkic, Noghay, Salar, and Uyghur. Complex predicates are analyzed in an endangered Tungusic variety, Uilta (Orok). One chapter deals with Korean, and another with Fukuoka Japanese. The final contribution, on Ladakhi (a Tibetic language), demonstrates the broader areal distribution of ambiguous verb sequences.The volume is based on presentations given at the 19th International Conference on Turkish Linguistics (ICTL), held August 17–19, 2018, at Nazarbayev University, Astana, Kazakhstan, which was the first conference of this kind in Central Asia.

- This study tests a hypothesis regarding the connectivity of wh-constructions in spoken discourse data of Turkish-German bilingual children (the ENDFAS/SKOBI corpus), focusing on constructions involving one verbum dicendi: söyle‑ ‘say, tell, verbalise, utter’. It develops a corpus-pragmatic filtering method, based on typological parameters such as headedness and wh-fronting as well as spoken language phenomena related to syntactic and prosodic integration. These criteria are applied in a stepwise manner to identify a subset of findings with potential for grammatical innovation.
