  • Consumers in a Sustainable Food Supply Chain (COSUS) : Understanding Consumer Behavior to Encourage Food Waste Reduction.
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Foods (Basel, Switzerland). - : MDPI AG. - 2304-8158. ; 6:12
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Consumers are directly and indirectly responsible for a significant fraction of food waste which, for a large part, could be avoided if they were willing to accept food that is suboptimal, i.e., food that deviates in sensory characteristics (odd shape, discoloration), or that has a best-before date which is approaching or has passed, but that is still perfectly fine to eat. The choice to accept or discard suboptimal food is taken either before or after purchase (hence, in the retail store or in the household). The aim of the European research project COSUS (Consumers in a sustainable food supply chain) was to increase consumer acceptance of suboptimal food, before and after purchase, by implementing targeted strategies that are based on consumer insights, and that are feasible for and acceptable by the food sector. To reach this aim, different methodological approaches were applied to analyze this issue, to experiment with different aspects, and to test the resulting interventions. Each of these approaches was undertaken by competent consortium partners from Denmark, Germany, Norway, Sweden and The Netherlands. The project finally provides validated strategies to promote the distribution and consumption of suboptimal foods, thereby improving resource efficiency in the food chain and contributing to a more sustainable food supply.

  • Cross-Atlantic Differences in Biotechnology and GMOs: A Media Content Analysis
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Agricultural Cooperative Management and Policy : New Robust, Reliable and Coherent Modelling Tools. - Cham : Springer International Publishing. - 9783319066349 ; , s. 299-314
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Different regulations about the permission and approval rate of biotechnology and genetically modified organisms (GMOs) between the USA and Europe have been controversial for decades. While there is a wide scientific coverage of what may be the cause of this divergence, little is known about the role that popular media play in the related political discourse. We analyzed the media coverage of biotechnology topics in both the USA and UK from 2011-2013 by examining two opinion-leading newspapers. We test the hypothesis that the respective media content reflects differences in transatlantic policies towards biotechnology. The two newspapers differed in reporting intensity but were alike in their content about GMOs: with the central actors being scientists and NGOs, arguing mostly in the field of the agricultural sector, the debate seems to be locked in a stalemate of potential risks re-iterated against potential benefits, with none of the two positions clearly dominating the discourse.

  • Agricultural cooperatives as social capital hubs – A case in a post-socialist country
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of Co-operative Organization and Management. - : Elsevier BV. - 2213-297X. ; 9
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Agricultural cooperatives in post-socialistic countries often fail to justify their purpose. Lack of trust and social capital are plausible reasons. In this paper we map the relationship structure of farmers that seek information about rural development programs, in a region where cooperatives operate. The Social network analysis demonstrates low levels of social capital, however, the cooperative acts as valuable information provider for its members, serving as information mediator to the rural development program’s resources, required for farmers’ investment initiatives. This is a positive evidence of small-scale farmers' attitudes towards cooperatives and a step forward towards cooperation and re-establishment of agricultural cooperatives in post-socialist countries.

  • Agricultural Policies and Structural Change in French Dairy Farms: A Nonstationary Markov Model
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Canadian Journal of Agricultural Economics / Revue canadienne d'agroeconomie. - : Wiley. - 0008-3976 .- 1744-7976. ; 63, s. 19-42
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this paper is to gain an understanding into how agricultural policies have affected structural change in the French dairy sector. A nonstationary Markov model is estimated using a Generalized Cross Entropy approach. Results show that while the price of cow's milk encourages farm growth, direct payments and quota restriction favor small farms. The price signal is a key factor of structural change. As a result, higher milk prices may accelerate the trend toward the further growth of dairy farms. Settlement policy and technical change seem not to slow this trend.

  • Are there Financial Benefits to Join RoSCAs? Empirical evidence from Equb in Ethiopia
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Procedia economics and finance. - 2212-5671. ; 1, s. 229-238
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Rotating Savings and Credit Associations (RoSCA) are informal financial institutions serving the financial service needs of many people in the developing countries. Though some researchers recommend the transformation of those institutions into formal ones to create economic efficiency, there is not much research on why members join those institutions and what benefits they derive from them. By taking an empirical example of Ethiopian equb and focusing on the financial feasibility of financial viability of becoming a member in RoSCA, this study assesses why members join RoSCAs. The survey conducted revealed that the financial motives outweigh all other motives in large equbs while the social motives are most important for members of small equbs. Most large and medium size equb members choose equbs than other possible alternatives because it is less expensive and involves very small transaction cost, if any. • Influence of transaction costs and Governance in the marketing of organic pineapples from Uganda
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Journal of Sustainable Development. - : Canadian Center of Science and Education. - 1913-9063 .- 1913-9071. ; 11, s. 194-211
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The organic pineapple sub-sector in Uganda has existed for slightly over 10 years. Whereas the sub-sector targets the organic market, slightly more than half of the organic pineapples produced by farmers are sold in this market and the rest is sold to the conventional market. This study aimed at determining the transaction costs that limit the amount of organic pineapples sold by farmers to the organic market. The study also aimed at establishing the relationship between the transaction costs and governance of the transactions between farmers and exporters. Data were collected from 140 organic pineapple farmers and seven organic pineapple export companies. Qualitative methods and econometric methods were used in data analysis. Findings show that there were high asset specificity and uncertainty in organic transactions, which resulted into farmers selling only a proportion of their produce to exporters. Involving farmer in contract formulation, trust, distance to collection centers and high asset specificity increased the proportion of pineapple sold by the farmers while farmers’ experience reduced the proportion sold. There were three forms of governances between farmers and organic exporters; the captive, modular and relational governance. The relational governance had the highest transaction costs, and less proportion of organic pineapples were sold in this governance. The study recommends transaction cost reduction strategies such as organizing farmers in cooperatives, trust building and engaging farmers in contract formulation.
