    • Sweden has become a multicultural society over the course of the last few decades. Around two million of Sweden’s nine million inhabitants have an immigrant background. Sport is a global phenomenon and is, as such, regarded as a tool for integration; however, at the same time sport is closely linked to national identity. The aim of this study is to enhance understanding of the sports-related experiences and desires of newly-migrated children, and how these can be met in Swedish sports clubs. We have interviewed six children, 10 to 13 years of age, from various countries with different experiences of organised sport. They were all newly-arrived and attended a transition school in a Swedish municipality. In the phenomenological analysis we discovered four key factors which appeared to be of importance for participation: possessing cultural understanding, possessing social networks, knowing the language and possessing necessary skills. In the discussion we stress that through awareness, sensitivity and flexibility, sports clubs can approach children from various cultures that have different sport’s needs. In the process of involving newly-migrated children in sports, it might be helpful to take the key factors presented into consideration, and reflect on how they could affect participation.

  • Sport as a Context for Integration : Newly Arrived Immigrant Children in Sweden Drawing Sporting Experiences
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Humanities and Social Science. - 2220-8488 .- 2221-0989. ; 3:18, s. 35-44
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Sport is a global phenomenon, which can make sportan important arena for integration into new societies. However, sport is also an expressionof national culture and identities. The aim of this study is to exploreimages and experiences that newly-arrived immigrant children in Sweden have aboutsport in their countryof origin, and challenges that can arise in processesof integration through sport. We asked20 newly arrived children aged 10 to 13 to make drawings about sporting experiences from their countriesof origin. Three themes emerged:sport as feeling joy, whereactivitieswereperformed with friendsduring leisure time;sport asacting formally, where activitieswere carried out inclubs;and sport as a spectator, where children were non-participants. We emphasise that development of sport should be two-way processes, where cultural learning should be mutual processes. Immigrant children’s experiences should be foregrounded when utilising and developing sports programmes.

  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Physical Culture and Sport. Studies and Research. - Biala Podlaska : Walter de Gruyter. - 2081-2221 .- 1899-4849. ; 92:1, s. 32-42
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The last years many people have been forcibly displaced due to circumstances such as conflicts in the world, and many people have come to Sweden for shelter. It has been challenging for Swedish society to receive and guide newcomers through the resettlement process, and many organizations in civil society, such as sports clubs, have been invited to support the resettlement. However, a limited numbers of studies has drawn the attention to sports clubs experiences. Therefore the aim of the paper was enhance understanding of sports clubs’ prerequesites and experiences of integration efforts with immigrant children and youth. Ten Swedish clubs with experience of working with newcomers participated. Semistructured interviews were conducted, and analyzed with qualitative content analysis. Two categories were identified: Struggling with sporting values and organization and Seeing integration in everyday activities. The clubs experienced that integration occurs in everyday activities, but current ideas focusing competition and rigid organization of sports constrained possibilities for integrating newcomers with no or limited former experience of club sports. The clubs experienced potential to contribute to personal development, social connectedness and enjoyment in a new society and building bridges between cultures. In conclusion, clubs cannot solve the challenges of resettlement in society but have potential to be part of larger societal networks of integration.
