  • High-spin states in the proton-unbound nucleus Re-161
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C. Nuclear Physics. - 0556-2813 .- 1089-490X. ; 74:2, s. 024316-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Excited states in Re-161 were populated using the Cd-106(Ni-58, p2n) reaction at a beam energy of 270 MeV, resulting in the first observation of gamma rays emitted from this nucleus. The reaction products were separated from scattered beam and fission fragments by the gas-filled recoil separator RITU, and were implanted in the double-sided silicon strip detectors of the GREAT spectrometer. Prompt gamma rays were detected by the JUROGAM Ge detector array and were assigned to Re-161 based on alpha- and proton-decay tagging of the implanted reaction products. The near-yrast high-spin level structure, which was delineated to spins around 39/2, is discussed in the context of the total Routhian surface formalism. The level scheme is interpreted in terms of the alignment of h(9/2)/f(7/2) neutrons at lower spins, followed by excitations involving the pi h(11/2) subshell at higher spins.

  • Fine structure in the alpha decay of Po-188,Po-192
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C. Nuclear Physics. - 0556-2813 .- 1089-490X. ; 68:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The alpha decay of Po-188,Po-192 has been reexamined in order to probe the 0(+) states in the daughter nuclei Pb-184,Pb-188 that can be associated with coexisting spherical, oblate, and/or prolate configurations. Improved values were measured for the excitation energy and the feeding alpha -decay intensity of the 0(2)(+) state in Pb-184,Pb-188 and conflicting results on the 0(3)(+) state in Pb-188 were clarified. All known cases of fine structure in the alpha decay of the even-even Po nuclei are reviewed. The reduced alpha-decay width systematics combined with potential-energy-surface calculations confirm the onset of deformation in the ground state of the polonium nuclei around the neutron midshell. An isomeric state with a half-life of 580(100)ns has been identified in Po-192 .

  • Prolate structures in Po-189 and Pb-185
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal A. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6001 .- 1434-601X. ; 24:1, s. 57-62
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The 3/2(-) isomer in Pb-185 and states above it have been populated in the α-decay of Po-189. The observed α-decay strengths to and the electromagnetic decay properties of the excited states in Pb-185 have been combined with Potential Energy Surface and Particle-Plus-Rotor calculations to propose configuration assignments. It is suggested that the α-decaying isomer of Po-189 is of prolate origin and that the prolate configuration becomes very low in energy in Pb-185.

  • Consumption of bilberries controls gingival inflammation
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Molecular Sciences. - 1661-6596 .- 1422-0067. ; 16:5, s. 10665-73
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Bioactive molecules in berries may be helpful in reducing the risk of oral diseases. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of bilberry consumption on the outcome of a routine dental clinical parameter of inflammation, bleeding on probing (BOP), as well as the impact on selected biomarkers of inflammation, such as cytokines, in gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) in individuals with gingivitis. Study individuals who did not receive standard of care treatment were allocated to either a placebo group or to groups that consumed either 250 or 500 g bilberries daily over seven days. The placebo group consumed an inactive product (starch). A study group, receiving standard of care (debridement only) was also included to provide a reference to standard of care treatment outcome. Cytokine levels were assayed using the Luminex MagPix system. The mean reduction in BOP before and after consumption of test product over 1 week was 41% and 59% in the groups that consumed either 250 or 500 g of bilberries/day respectively, and was 31% in the placebo group, and 58% in the standard of care reference group. The analysis only showed a significant reduction in cytokine levels in the group that consumed 500 g of bilberries/day. A statistically significant reduction was observed for IL-1b (p = 0.025), IL-6 (p = 0.012) and VEGF (p = 0.017) in GCF samples in the group that consumed 500 g of bilberries daily. It appears that berry intake has an ameliorating effect on some markers of gingival inflammation reducing gingivitis to a similar extent compared to standard of care.

  • Shape-changing particle decays of Bi-185 and structure of the lightest odd-mass Bi isotopes
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C. Nuclear Physics. - 0556-2813 .- 1089-490X. ; 69:5, s. 054308-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Proton and alpha decay of the proton-rich nuclide Bi-185 has been restudied in more detail in the complete fusion reaction Nb-93(Mo-95, 3n)Bi-185 at the velocity filter SHIP. The observed decay pattern of Bi-185 and of the heavier odd-mass isotopes Bi-187,Bi-189,Bi-191,Bi-193 are interpreted based on potential-energy surface calculations. It is shown that the experimental systematics of the particle decays and of the excited states in these nuclei (where known) can be explained by the prolate-oblate shape co-existence at low excitation energy. The observed state in Bi-185 is proposed to be of prolate nature, which is in contrast with the previously proposed oblate interpretation.

  • First observation of gamma-rays from the proton emitter Au-171
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal A. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6001 .- 1434-601X. ; 16:4, s. 489-494
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Gamma-rays from the alpha- and proton-unstable nuclide Au-171 have been observed for the first time. The gamma-rays were correlated with both a proton- and an alpha-particle decay branch, confirming that the nucleus decays by alpha and proton emission from a single (11/2(-)) state. The measurement confirms the previously determined half-lives for these particle decays but the present values are of higher precision. In addition, a longer half-life than determined in previous work was measured for the proton-unstable tentative ground state. The results are discussed in relation to structures in neighbouring nuclei and compared with a Strutinsky-type TRS calculation.

  • Proton emission from triaxial nuclei
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C. Nuclear Physics. - 0556-2813 .- 1089-490X. ; 70:6, s. 061301-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Proton decay from triaxially deformed nuclei is investigated. The deformation parameters corresponding to the mother nucleus are determined microscopically and the calculated decay widths are used to probe the mean-field wave function. The proton wave function in the mother nucleus is described as a resonant state in a coupled-channel formalism. The decay width, as well as the angular distribution of the decaying particle, are evaluated and their dependence upon the triaxial deformation parameters is studied in the decay of Re-161 and Bi-185. It is found that the decay width is very sensitive to the parameters defining the triaxial deformation while the angular distribution is a universal function which does not depend upon details of the nuclear structure.
