  • Effects of Candesartan in the Acute Phase of Intracerebral Hemorrhage
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of Stroke and Cerebrovascular Diseases. - : Elsevier BV. - 1052-3057. ; 28:8, s. 2262-2267
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background and Purpose: Uncertainty persists over the effects of blood pressure-lowering treatment in acute intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH). We assessed the effects of treatment with candesartan in acute ICH and according to different types of hematoma. Methods: Post-hoc analysis of the Scandinavian Candesartan Acute Stroke Trial, a randomized- and placebo-controlled, double-masked trial of candesartan in patients with any stroke within the acute phase (<30 hours) and high systolic blood pressure (≥140 mm Hg). We collected baseline computed tomography scans of participants with ICH, and characterized hematoma volume (planimetric approach), location (deep versus lobar or infratentorial), hemisphere side, and presence of intraventricular hemorrhage. The trial's 2 coprimary effect variables were the composite endpoint of vascular death, stroke or myocardial infarction, and functional outcome at 6 months according to the modified Rankin scale. We used Cox, ordinal, and binary logistic regression for analysis and adjusted for key, predefined prognostic variables. Results: Of 274 participants with ICH, computed tomography scans were available in 205 patients (74.8%). There were no significant differences between the candesartan and placebo groups with respect to hematoma volume (median 15.6 mL versus 13.5 mL, P = .96), deep location (77% versus 72%, P = .64), right hemisphere (49% versus 51%, P = .46), and presence of intraventricular hemorrhage (18% versus 11%, P = .22). Candesartan was associated with a significant increase in poor functional outcome in patients with deep hematoma (adjusted common odds ratio 2.27, 95% confidence interval 1.23-4.18, P = .009, P for interaction .015), but there was no differential effect on functional outcome or vascular events in any of the other imaging subgroups. Conclusions: Candesartan was not associated with any beneficial effect when initiated in the acute phase of ICH, a possible adverse effect on functional outcome in patients with deep hematomas cannot be ruled out by this study alone. © 2019 Elsevier Inc.

  • Sex pheromone of the Brazilian apple leafroller, Bonagota cranaodes Meyrick (Lepidoptera, Tortricidae)
  • 1999
  • Ingår i: Zeitschrift für Naturforschung C - A Journal of Biosciences. - : Walter de Gruyter. - 0939-5075 .- 1865-7125. ; 54:7-8, s. 595-601
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The female sex pheromone of Bonagota (=Phthteochroa) cranaodes (Meyrick) is a blend of (E,Z)-3,5-dodecadienyl acetate (E3,Z5-12:Ac) and (Z)-9-hexadecenyl acetate (Z9-16:Ac) according to analysis of pheromone - gland extracts and field trapping in apple orchards. This is the first time that E3,Z5-12:Ac has been identified as a lepidopteran sex pheromone. Traps baited with 100 mu g E3,Z5-12:Ac were attractive over 15 weeks in the field and were as effective as traps baited with virgin females. Addition of Z9-16:Ac to E3,Z5-12:Ac at ratio of 1:10 had a significantly increase of male moths. The addition of the Z,E and Z:Z isomers to rubber septa baited with E3,Z5-12:Ac did not modify B. cranaodes male attraction, but 10% of EE enhanced trap catch.

  • Intercalibration of classical and molecular techniques for identification of Alexandrium fundyense (Dinophyceae) and estimation of cell densities
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Harmful Algae. - : Elsevier BV. - 1568-9883. ; 6:1, s. 56-72
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A workshop with the aim to compare classical and molecular techniques for phytoplankton enumeration took place at Kristineberg Marine Research Station, Sweden, in August 2005. Seventeen different techniques - nine classical microscopic-based and eight molecular methods - were compared. Alexandrium fundyense was the target organism in four experiments. Experiment 1 was designed to determine the range of cell densities over which the methods were applicable. Experiment 2 tested the species specificity of the methods by adding Alexandrium ostenfeldii, to samples containing A. fundyense. Experiments 3 and 4 tested the ability of the methods to detect the target organism within a natural phytoplankton community. Most of the methods could detect cells at the lowest concentration tested, 100 cells L-1, but the variance was high for methods using small volumes, such as counting chambers and slides. In general, the precision and reproducibility of the investigated methods increased with increased target cell concentration. Particularly molecular methods were exceptions in that their relative standard deviation did not vary with target cell concentration. Only two of the microscopic methods and three of the molecular methods had a significant linear relationship between their cell count estimates and the A. fundyense concentration in experiment 2, where the objective was to discriminate that species from a morphologically similar and genetically closely related species. None of the investigated methods were affected by the addition of a natural plankton community background matrix in experiment 3. The results of this study are discussed in the context of previous intercomparisons and the difficulties in defining the absolute, true target cell concentration. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. • Ecological changes as a plausible explanation for differences in uptake of contaminants between European perch and eelpout in a coastal area of the Baltic Sea
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Environmental Toxicology and Pharmacology. - : Elsevier BV. - 1382-6689 .- 1872-7077. ; 80
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Unexpected increasing trends in the concentration of contaminants in European perch (Perca fluviatilis) and in activity of ethoxyresorufin-O-deethylase (EROD) in European perch and eelpout (Zoarces viviparus) have been observed at a Swedish coastal reference site. This study uses data from different sources to investigate plausible explanations. The results showed that a change in diet and an improved overall condition coincide with an increase in mercury in European perch. Furthermore, an increase in several organic contaminants in European perch coincided with the introduction of an invasive deep-burrowing polychaete, which likely contributed to the release of contaminants through bioturbation. The increase in EROD-activity in both species seems to be related to contaminants that reach the fish through the water rather than the diet. The results show that for contaminants that are taken up via the diet, trends in contamination can be opposite for different species of fish in the same area. © 2020

  • Characteristics and outcome among women and men transported by ambulance due to symptoms arousing suspicion of acute coronary syndrome
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Medical Science Monitor. - : Medical Science International Sp. z o.o.. - 1234-1010 .- 1643-3750. ; 8:4, s. 251-256
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to describe the characteristics and outcome in relation to sex in consecutive patients who were transported by an ambulance due to symptoms arousing suspicion of acute coronary syndrome. MATERIAL/METHODS: Our research involved all patients transported by ambulance over a 3-month period in the community of Göteborg due to such symptoms. The P-values were age adjusted. RESULTS: Of the 930 transported patients fulfilling the given criteria, 452 (49%) were of women. The women were older and had a lower incidence of previous acute myocardial infarction, angina pectoris, and current smoking. Women less frequently had a final diagnosis of acute coronary syndrome (22.3% vs 36.6%; p<0.0001) or acute myocardial infarction (10.1% vs 17.9%; p<0.0001). However, the mortality rate during one year was the same in women (17.2%) and men (18.7%). Women were less frequently clammy on admission to the ambulance (17% vs 30%; p<0.0001) and less frequently showed signs of myocardial ischemia in ECG upon admission to the emergency department (26% vs 38%; p<0.0001) compared to men. Among those patients with an acute coronary syndrome, women more frequently complained of dyspnea than men (27% vs 12%; p=0.018). CONCLUSIONS: Our study suggests that among ambulance transported patients with suspicion of acute coronary syndrome there are some differences between women and men in terms of their characteristics and underlying etiology, but not in terms of the risk of mortality.

  • Early identification of patients with an acute coronary syndrome as assessed by dispatchers and the ambulance crew
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: American Journal of Emergency Medicine. - : W.B. Saunders Co. - 0735-6757 .- 1532-8171. ; 20:3, s. 196-201
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study was performed to evaluate the possibility of early identification of patients with an acute coronary syndrome who are transported by ambulance. All patients in the community of Göteborg who were transported by ambulance over a period of 3 months owing to symptoms raising any suspicion of an acute coronary syndrome were studied. In all 930 cases that were included in the survey, 130 (14%) had a final diagnosis of acute myocardial infarction (AMI) and 276 (30%) had a final diagnosis of an acute coronary syndrome. Independent risk indicators for development of AMI were: male sex (odds ratio 1.70; 95% confidence limits 1.02-2.84), cold and clammy on admission of the ambulance crew (odds ratio 2.07; 95% confidence limits 1.23-3.49) and showing electrocardiogram (ECG) signs of myocardial ischemia on admission to the emergency department (odds ratio 8.78; 95%confidence limits 5.28-14.61). Independent predictors for development of an acute coronary syndrome were: male sex (odds ratio 1.97; 95% confidence limits 1.30-2.99), a history of angina pectoris (odds ratio 3.41; 95% confidence limits 2.24-5.26), cold and clammy on admission of the ambulance crew (odds ratio 1.95; 95% confidence limits 1.21-3.15), and ECG signs of myocardial ischemia on admission to the emergency department (odds ratio 5.55; 95% confidence limits 3.63-8.58). Among patients seen by the ambulance crew with symptoms raising any suspicion of an acute coronary syndrome, predictors for that diagnosis included male sex, a history of angina pectoris, patients being cold and clammy on admission of the ambulance crew, and ECG signs of myocardial ischemia on admission to the emergency department.
