  • EndoVAscular treatment and ThRombolysis for Ischemic Stroke Patients (EVA-TRISP) registry: basis and methodology of a pan-European prospective ischaemic stroke revascularisation treatment registry.
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: BMJ open. - : BMJ. - 2044-6055. ; 11:8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Thrombolysis in Ischemic Stroke Patients (TRISP) collaboration was a concerted effort initiated in 2010 with the purpose to address relevant research questions about the effectiveness and safety of intravenous thrombolysis (IVT). The collaboration also aims to prospectively collect data on patients undergoing endovascular treatment (EVT) and hence the name of the collaboration was changed from TRISP to EVA-TRISP. The methodology of the former TRISP registry for patients treated with IVT has already been published. This paper focuses on describing the EVT part of the registry. All centres committed to collecting predefined variables on consecutive patients prospectively. We aim for accuracy and completeness of the data and to adapt local databases to investigate novel research questions. Herein, we introduce the methodology of a recently constructed academic investigator-initiated open collaboration EVT registry built as an extension of an existing IVT registry in patients with acute ischaemic stroke (AIS).Currently, the EVA-TRISP network includes 20 stroke centres with considerable expertise in EVT and maintenance of high-quality hospital-based registries. Following several successful randomised controlled trials (RCTs), many important clinical questions remain unanswered in the (EVT) field and some of them will unlikely be investigated in future RCTs. Prospective registries with high-quality data on EVT-treated patients may help answering some of these unanswered issues, especially on safety and efficacy of EVT in specific patient subgroups. This collaborative effort aims at addressing clinically important questions on safety and efficacy of EVT in conditions not covered by RCTs. The TRISP registry generated substantial novel data supporting stroke physicians in their daily decision making considering IVT candidate patients. While providing observational data on EVT in daily clinical practice, our future findings may likewise be hypothesis generating for future research as well as for quality improvement (on EVT). The collaboration welcomes participation of further centres willing to fulfill the commitment and the outlined requirements.

  • Quality of life, effort and disturbance perceived in noise: A comparison between employees with aided hearing impairment and normal hearing
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Audiology. - : Informa Healthcare. - 1499-2027 .- 1708-8186. ; 52:9, s. 642-649
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objectives: The aims were to compare health-related quality of life (HRQOL) and hearing handicap between two groups of employees with normal hearing and aided hearing impairment (HI). HRQOL was also compared to a normative population. The second aim was to compare perceived effort (PE) and disturbance after completing a task in office noise between the two study groups. Design: A Swedish version of the short form-36 (SF-36) and the hearing handicap inventory for adults (HHIA) was used to determine HRQOL and hearing handicap. The Borg-CR 10 scale was used to measure PE and disturbance. Study sample: Hearing impaired (n = 20) and normally hearing (n = 20) participants. The normative sample comprised of 597 matched respondents. Results: Hearing-impaired employees report relatively good HRQOL in relation to the normative population, but significantly lower physical functioning and higher PE than their normally-hearing peers in noise. Results from the HHIA showed mild self-perceived hearing handicap. Conclusions: The current results demonstrate that physical health status can be negatively affected even at a mild-moderate severity of HI, and that a higher PE is reported from this group when performing a task in noise, despite the regular use of hearing aids.

  • Microwave Heating as a Method to Improve Sanitation of Sewage Sludge in Wastewater Plants
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: IEEE Access. - : IEEE-INST ELECTRICAL ELECTRONICS ENGINEERS INC. - 2169-3536. ; 7, s. 142308-142316
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • For long-term sustainable agriculture, it is critical that we recycle nutrition to the soil that it came from. One important source is sewage sludge, but it must be sanitized from undesired pathogens before it may be spread on arable land. One common method today is deposition in about six months or more. Not only is such a long deposition-time costly due to the required storage-space, in the future usage of the method is likely to be more restricted from a regulatory perspective. To heat up sewage-sludge is a known method to speed up the sanitation process. However, achieving an even guaranteed temperature is not easy with porous sewage sludge. This is mainly due to the limited heat conductivity of the sludge. Microwaves at a frequency of 2.45 GHz have a penetration depth of a few centimeters and therefore has an advantage compared to other heating methods which only heats the surface. In the proposed system, the sewage sludge is continuously processed through a series of microwave cavities. The pathogen removal effectiveness was studied for different exposure settings, e.g., conveyor speed and applied microwave power in each cavity.

  • A scavenger function for a Drosophila peptidoglycan recognition protein
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Journal of Biological Chemistry. - 0021-9258 .- 1083-351X. ; 278:9, s. 7059-7064
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Recent studies of peptidoglycan recognition protein (PGRP) have shown that 2 of the 13 Drosophila PGRP genes encode proteins that function as receptors mediating immune responses to bacteria. We show here that another member, PGRP-SC1B, has a totally different function because it has enzymatic activity and thereby can degrade peptidoglycan. A mass spectrometric analysis of the cleavage products demonstrates that the enzyme hydrolyzes the lactylamide bond between the glycan strand and the cross-linking peptides. This result assigns the protein as anN-acetylmuramoyl-l-alanine amidase (EC3.5.1.28), and the corresponding gene is thus the first of this class to be described from a eukaryotic organism. Mutant forms of PGRP-SC1B lacking a potential zinc ligand are enzymatically inactive but retain their peptidoglycan affinity. The immunostimulatory properties of PGRP-SC1B-degraded peptidoglycan are much reduced. This is in striking contrast to lysozyme-digested peptidoglycan, which retains most of its elicitor activity. This points toward a scavenger function for PGRP-SC1B. Furthermore, a sequence homology comparison with phage T7 lysozyme, also an N-acetylmuramoyl-l-alanine amidase, shows that as many as six of the Drosophila PGRPs could belong to this class of proteins.

  • Expression profiling of repetitive elements by melting temperature analysis : variation in HERV-W gag expression across human individuals and tissues
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: BMC Genomics. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1471-2164. ; 10, s. 532-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Human endogenous retroviruses (HERV) constitute approximately 8% of the human genome and have long been considered ""junk"". The sheer number and repetitive nature of these elements make studies of their expression methodologically challenging. Hence, little is known of transcription of genomic regions harboring such elements. Results: Applying a recently developed technique for obtaining high resolution melting temperature data, we examined the frequency distributions of HERV-W gag element into 13 Tm categories in human tissues. Transcripts containing HERV-W gag sequences were expressed in non-random patterns with extensive variations in the expression between both tissues, including different brain regions, and individuals. Furthermore, the patterns of such transcripts varied more between individuals in brain regions than other tissues. Conclusion: Thus, regulated expression of non-coding regions of the human genome appears to include the HERV-W family of repetitive elements. Although it remains to be established whether such expression patterns represent leakage from transcription of functional regions or specific transcription, the current approach proves itself useful for studying detailed expression patterns of repetitive regions.

  • Electrical and thermal characterization of a PV-CPC hybrid
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Solar Energy. - : Elsevier BV. - 0038-092X. ; 81:7, s. 917-928
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Long term evaluation of an asymmetric CPC PV-thermal hybrid built for high latitudes, MaRcCo (MaximumReflectorCollector), is performed in Lund, lat 55.7 degrees, and this paper discusses output estimates and characteristics of the system. The output estimates are calculated using the MINSUN simulation program. To get the input for MINSUN, measurements were performed on two MaReCo prototypes. These measurements show that the front reflector collects most of the irradiation in the summer, and the back reflector in the spring and fall. Two different reflector materials were used, anodized aluminium and aluminium laminated steel. The steel based reflector was selected for its rigidness. The output estimates show no difference in yearly output between the two reflector materials, both back reflectors deliver 168 kW h/(m(2) cell area) of electricity compared to 136 kW h/m(2) cell area for cells without reflectors. The cells facing the front reflector deliver 205 kW h/(m2 cell area) of electricity. The estimated output of thermal energy was 145 kW h/(m2 glazed area) at 50 degrees C. The estimates show that the optimal placement of the photovoltaic cells is facing the front reflector, but having cells on both sides is in most cases the best option. (c) 2007 Elsevier Ltd.
