Exposed Datapath for Efficient Computing

- We introduce FlexCore, which is the first exemplar of a processor based on the FlexSoC processor paradigm. TheFlexCore utilizes an exposed datapath for increased performance. Microbenchmarks yield a performance boost of a factor of two over a traditional five-stage pipeline with the same functional units as the FlexCore.We describe our approach to compiling for the FlexCore.A flexible interconnect allows the FlexCore datapath to bedynamically reconfigured as a consequence of code generation. Additionally, specialized functional units may be introduced and utilized within the same architecture and compilation framework. The exposed datapath requires a wide control word. The conducted evaluation of two micro benchmarks confirms that this increases the instruction bandwidth and memory footprint. This calls for an efficient instruction decoding as proposed in the FlexSoC paradigm.

Informationssäkerhetskultur i praktiken: Populärvetenskaplig sammanfattning

- Projektet Informationssäkerhetskultur i praktiken har finansierats av MSB under åren 2019–2024 med syftet att förklara och belysa hur informationssäkerhetskulturen i organisationer kan förändras till det bättre. Fokus har varit på olika sätt att mäta och förändra kulturen. Projektet har genomförts av forskare i tre organisationer. Upplägget är tvärvetenskapligt med forskare specialiserade inom ämnen såsom fredsstudier, statsvetenskap, informatik, psykologi och cyberförsvar. Det tvärvetenskapliga angreppssättet har, förutom de resultat som presenteras i denna rapport, inneburit stort kunskapsutbyte mellan forskare i projektet och förbättrat deras förståelse för de problem och dilemman som kopplas till hantering av informationssäkerhetskulturer. Projektets forskningsplan inkluderade flera datainsamlingsinsatser och interventioner i samhällsviktiga organisationer. Eftersom kunskap om en organisations informationssäkerhet kan missbrukas av illasinnade aktörer förutsatte projektet stort förtroende och engagemang från dessa organisationer. Det krävde också förtroende och engagemang från enskilda individer inom dessa organisationer som förväntades delta i studierna. Den pandemi som drabbade världen i början av projektet innebar att många av de planer som gjorts behövde justeras och förändras. Organisationer och personer som trots detta valt att stödja studien förtjänar därför ett tack utöver det vanliga. Stort tack!

- In this paper we compare ideological positions of political parties in Eastern and Western Europe. As the Communist regimes collapsed and new democracies began to emerge in Eastern Europe, it became obvious that historical and cultural differences existed in relation to Western Europe. This was not least visible among the political parties. When the West European parties initiated contacts with potential sister parties in the East, noticeable differences were revealed in several issues. In general, the eastern parties appeared to be more nationalist, more populist and less tolerant towards minorities than their Western sister parties. The question raised in this paper is whether these differences, have faded or not during the 25-year period after 1989. In order to perform this analysis, the three largest and most influential party families are selected: the Christian Democratic EPP, the Social Democratic PES and the Liberal ALDE. Departing from election manifesto data compiled by the Comparative Manifesto Project, we have performed a time series analysis ranging from 1990 to 2013. Here, the Eastern parties are compared to their Western sister parties within each party family. Firstly, they are compared along the general left-right dimension, and secondly they are compared in specific issues, which have been conceived as delicate matter: the view on the EU, nationalism and view on multiculturalism.

- Robust SLAM in large-scale environments requires fault resilience and awareness at multiple stages, from sensing and odometry estimation to loop closure. In this work, we present TBV (Trust But Verify) Radar SLAM, a method for radar SLAM that introspectively verifies loop closure candidates. TBV Radar SLAM achieves a high correct-loop-retrieval rate by combining multiple place-recognition techniques: tightly coupled place similarity and odometry uncertainty search, creating loop descriptors from origin-shifted scans, and delaying loop selection until after verification. Robustness to false constraints is achieved by carefully verifying and selecting the most likely ones from multiple loop constraints. Importantly, the verification and selection are carried out after registration when additional sources of loop evidence can easily be computed. We integrate our loop retrieval and verification method with a robust odometry pipeline within a pose graph framework. By evaluation on public benchmarks we found that TBV Radar SLAM achieves 65% lower error than the previous state of the art. - The Thrombolysis in Ischemic Stroke Patients (TRISP) collaboration was a concerted effort initiated in 2010 with the purpose to address relevant research questions about the effectiveness and safety of intravenous thrombolysis (IVT). The collaboration also aims to prospectively collect data on patients undergoing endovascular treatment (EVT) and hence the name of the collaboration was changed from TRISP to EVA-TRISP. The methodology of the former TRISP registry for patients treated with IVT has already been published. This paper focuses on describing the EVT part of the registry.All centres committed to collecting predefined variables on consecutive patients prospectively. We aim for accuracy and completeness of the data and to adapt local databases to investigate novel research questions. Herein, we introduce the methodology of a recently constructed academic investigator-initiated open collaboration EVT registry built as an extension of an existing IVT registry in patients with acute ischaemic stroke (AIS).Currently, the EVA-TRISP network includes 20 stroke centres with considerable expertise in EVT and maintenance of high-quality hospital-based registries. Following several successful randomised controlled trials (RCTs), many important clinical questions remain unanswered in the (EVT) field and some of them will unlikely be investigated in future RCTs. Prospective registries with high-quality data on EVT-treated patients may help answering some of these unanswered issues, especially on safety and efficacy of EVT in specific patient subgroups.This collaborative effort aims at addressing clinically important questions on safety and efficacy of EVT in conditions not covered by RCTs. The TRISP registry generated substantial novel data supporting stroke physicians in their daily decision making considering IVT candidate patients. While providing observational data on EVT in daily clinical practice, our future findings may likewise be hypothesis generating for future research as well as for quality improvement (on EVT). The collaboration welcomes participation of further centres willing to fulfill the commitment and the outlined requirements.

Growth and thermal stability of Sc-doped BaZrO 3 thin films deposited on single crystal substrates

- Thin films of BaZr1-xScxO3-x/2, (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.64), well known as proton conducting solid electrolytes for intermediate temperature solid oxide fuel cell, were deposited by magnetron sputtering. X-ray diffraction analysis of the as deposited films reveals the presence of single-phase perovskite structure. The films were deposited on four different substrates (c-Al2O3, LaAlO3〈100〉, LaAlO3〈110〉, LaAlO3〈111〉) yielding random, (110)- or (100)-oriented films. The stability of the as-deposited films was assessed by annealing in air at 600 °C for 2 h. The annealing treatment revealed instabilities of the perovskite structure for the (110) and randomly oriented films, but not for (100) oriented film. The instability of the coating under heat treatment was attributed to the low oxygen content in the film (understoichiometry) prior annealing combined with the surface energy and atomic layers stacking along the growth direction. An understoichiometric (100) oriented perovskite films showed higher stability of the structure under an annealing in air at 600 °C.

- Aggregated alpha-synuclein is the main component of Lewy bodies, intraneuronal inclusions found in brains with Parkinson's disease and dementia with Lewy bodies. A body of evidence implicates oxidative stress in the pathogenesis of these diseases. For example, a large excess (30:1, aldehyde:protein) of the lipid peroxidation end products 4-oxo-2-nonenal (ONE) or 4-hydroxy-2-nonenal (HNE) can induce alpha-synuclein oligomer formation. The objective of the study was to investigate the effect of these reactive aldehydes on alpha-synuclein at a lower molar excess (3:1) at both physiological (7.4) and acidic (5.4) pH. As observed by size-exclusion chromatography, ONE rapidly induced the formation of alpha-synuclein oligomers at both pH values, but the effect was less pronounced under the acidic condition. In contrast, only a small proportion of alpha-synuclein oligomers were formed with low excess HNE-treatment at physiological pH and no oligomers at all under the acidic condition. With prolonged incubation times (up to 96 h), more alpha-synuclein was oligomerized at physiological pH for both ONE and HNE. As determined by Western blot, ONE-oligomers were more SDS-stable and to a higher-degree cross-linked as compared to the HNE-induced oligomers. However, as shown by their greater sensitivity to proteinase K treatment, ONE-oligomers, exhibited a less compact structure than HNE-oligomers. As indicated by mass spectrometry, ONE modified most Lys residues, whereas HNE primarily modified the His50 residue and fewer Lys residues, albeit to a higher degree than ONE. Taken together, our data show that the aldehydes ONE and HNE can modify alpha-synuclein and induce oligomerization, even at low molar excess, but to a higher degree at physiological pH and seemingly through different pathways.
