  • Evidence for spin-triplet superconducting correlations in metal-oxide heterostructures with noncollinear magnetization
  • 2014

    • Heterostructures composed of ferromagnetic La0.7Sr0.3MnO3, ferromagnetic SrRuO3, and superconducting YBa2Cu3O6+x were studied experimentally. Structures of composition Au/La0.7Sr0.3MnO3/SrRuO3/YBa2Cu3O6+x were prepared by pulsed laser deposition, and their high quality was confirmed by x-ray diffraction and reflectometry. Anoncollinear magnetic state of the heterostructureswas revealed by means of superconducting quantum interference device magnetometry and polarized neutron reflectometry. We have further observed superconducting currents in mesa structures fabricated by deposition of a second superconducting Nb layer on top of the heterostructure, followed by patterning with photolithography and ion-beam etching. Josephson effects observed in these mesa structures can be explained by the penetration of a triplet component of the superconducting order parameter into the magnetic layers.

  • Magnetic waveguides for neutron reflectometry
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. - 2469-9969 .- 2469-9950. ; 96:16
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We show that the sensitivity and depth selectivity of neutron reflectometry can be greatly enhanced through a waveguide design that takes advantage of the spin-dependent magnetic neutron scattering potential to steer spin-up and spin-down neutrons into waveguide modes with different depth profiles. Using a bilayer of manganate and ruthenate ferromagnets, we demonstrate that a magnetic waveguide structure with sharp spin-up and spin-down modes centered in the two different layers can be generated by adding a magnetically inactive capping layer. The resulting reflectometric data allow accurate and reliable determination of a small in-plane magnetization in the ruthenate layer, despite its immediate proximity to the manganate layer with much larger magnetization. Magnetic neutron waveguides thus enable depth-sensitive measurements of small electronic spin polarizations in a large variety of magnetic multilayers and devices.

  • On the explanation of the paramagnetic Meissner effect in superconductor/ferromagnet heterostructures
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Europhysics letters. - : Institute of Physics (IOP). - 0295-5075 .- 1286-4854. ; 116:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • An increase of the magnetic moment in superconductor/ferromagnet (S/F) bilayers V(40 nm)/F (F = Fe(1, 3 nm), Co(3 nm), Ni(3 nm)) was observed using SQUID magnetometry upon cooling below the superconducting transition temperature TC in magnetic fields of 10 Oe to 50 Oe applied parallel to the sample surface. A similar increase, often called the paramagnetic Meissner effect (PME), was observed before in various superconductors and superconductor/ferromagnet systems. To explain the PME effect in the presented S/F bilayers a model based on a row of vortices located at the S/F interface is proposed. According to the model the magnetic moment induced below TC consists of the paramagnetic contribution of the vortex cores and the diamagnetic contribution of the vortex-free region of the S layer. Since the thickness of the S layer is found to be 3-4 times less than the magnetic-field penetration depth, this latter diamagnetic contribution is negligible. The model correctly accounts for the sign, the approximate magnitude and the field dependence of the paramagnetic and the Meissner contributions of the induced magnetic moment upon passing the superconducting transition of a ferromagnet/superconductor bilayer. • Distinct spin and orbital dynamics in Sr2RuO4
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Nature Communications. - : Springer Nature. - 2041-1723. ; 14:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The unconventional superconductor Sr2RuO4 has long served as a benchmark for theories of correlated-electron materials. The determination of the superconducting pairing mechanism requires detailed experimental information on collective bosonic excitations as potential mediators of Cooper pairing. We have used Ru L3-edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering to obtain comprehensive maps of the electronic excitations of Sr2RuO4 over the entire Brillouin zone. We observe multiple branches of dispersive spin and orbital excitations associated with distinctly different energy scales. The spin and orbital dynamical response functions calculated within the dynamical mean-field theory are in excellent agreement with the experimental data. Our results highlight the Hund metal nature of Sr2RuO4 and provide key information for the understanding of its unconventional superconductivity.
