  • NeuLAND: The high-resolution neutron time-of-flight spectrometer for R 3 B at FAIR
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research, Section A: Accelerators, Spectrometers, Detectors and Associated Equipment. - : Elsevier BV. - 0168-9002. ; 1014
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • NeuLAND (New Large-Area Neutron Detector) is the next-generation neutron detector for the R3B (Reactions with Relativistic Radioactive Beams) experiment at FAIR (Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research). NeuLAND detects neutrons with energies from 100 to 1000 MeV, featuring a high detection efficiency, a high spatial and time resolution, and a large multi-neutron reconstruction efficiency. This is achieved by a highly granular design of organic scintillators: 3000 individual submodules with a size of 5 × 5 × 250 cm3 are arranged in 30 double planes with 100 submodules each, providing an active area of 250 × 250 cm2 and a total depth of 3 m. The spatial resolution due to the granularity together with a time resolution of σt≤ 150 ps ensures high-resolution capabilities. In conjunction with calorimetric properties, a multi-neutron reconstruction efficiency of 50% to 70% for four-neutron events will be achieved, depending on both the emission scenario and the boundary conditions allowed for the reconstruction method. We present in this paper the final design of the detector as well as results from test measurements and simulations on which this design is based.

  • Efficiency determination of resistive plate chambers for fast quasi-monoenergetic neutrons
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal A. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6001 .- 1434-601X. ; 50:7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Composite detectors made of stainless-steel converters and multigap resistive plate chambers have been irradiated with quasi-monoenergetic neutrons with a peak energy of 175 MeV. The neutron detection efficiency has been determined using two different methods. The data are in agreement with the output of Monte Carlo simulations. The simulations are then extended to study the response of a hypothetical array made of these detectors to energetic neutrons from a radioactive ion beam experiment.

  • Quantum information processing and communication - Strategic report on current status, visions and goals for research in Europe
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal D. Atomic, Molecular, Optical and Plasma Physics. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6060 .- 1434-6079. ; 36:2, s. 203-228
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present an excerpt of the document "Quantum Information Processing and Communication: Strategic report on current status, visions and goals for research in Europe", which has been recently published in electronic form at the website of FET (the Future and Emerging Technologies Unit of the Directorate General Information Society of the European Commission, http://www.cordis.lu/ist/fet/qipc-sr.htm). This document has been elaborated, following a former suggestion by FET, by a committee of QIPC scientists to provide input towards the European Commission for the preparation of the Seventh Framework Program. Besides being a document addressed to policy makers and funding agencies (both at the European and national level), the document contains a detailed scientific assessment of the state-of-the-art, main research goals, challenges, strengths, weaknesses, visions and perspectives of all the most relevant QIPC sub-fields, that we report here.

  • 325 GHz and 650 GHz Dual-polarisation receivers Concept
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: 32nd International Symposium of Space Terahertz Technology, ISSTT 2022.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The integrated dual-polarisation receivers utilize a dual probe concept, efficiently integrating the antenna and MMIC package environment which allows for polarisation discrimination without the use of bulky and lossy external orthomode transducers. This concept increases the sensitivity of the instrument and reduces its size, enabling the development of future earth observation arrays. Omnisys Instruments AB (Sweden) and Chalmers University of Technology (Sweden) are working to demonstrate state-of-the-art dual polarisation capability with two integrated receiver modules at 325 GHz and 650 GHz.

  • Poly(ethylene glycol)-containing supports for solid-phase synthesis of peptides and combinatorial organic libraries.
  • 1997
  • Ingår i: Poly(ethylene glycol): Chemistry and Biological Applications, ACS Symp. Series. - Washington, DC : American Chemical Society. - 9780841235373 ; 680, s. 239-264
  • Bokkapitel (populärvet., debatt m.m.)abstract
    • The choice of a polymeric support is a key factor for the success of solid-phase methods for syntheses of organic compounds and biomolecules such as peptides and oligonucleotides. Classical Merrifield solid-phase peptide synthesis, performed on low cross-linked hydrophobic polystyrene (PS) beads, sometimes suffers from sequence-dependent coupling difficulties. The concept of incorporating PEG into supports for solid-phase synthesis represents a successful approach to alleviating such problems. This chapter reviews the preparation of families of poly(ethylene glycol)-polystyrene (PEG-PS)graft as well as (highly) Cross-Linked Ethoxylate Acrylate Resin (CLEAR) supports developed in our laboratories, and demonstrates their applications to the syntheses of a wide range of targets in connection with numerous research objectives.

  • Correct interpretation of nanofluid convective heat transfer
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Thermal Sciences. - : Elsevier BV. - 1290-0729. ; 129, s. 504-531
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Engineers and scientist have a long tradition in trying to improve the thermophysical properties of convective heat carriers such as water and transformer oil. Technological developments of the last decades allow the dispersion of particle of sizes ranging between 10 and 100 nm in these liquids. In a large number of recent studies the resulting nanofluids have been reported to display anomalously high increase of convective heat transfer. The present study compiles experiments from five independent research teams investigating convective heat transfer in nanofluid flow in pipes, pipe with inserted twisted tape, annular counter flow heat exchanger, and coil and plate heat exchangers. The results of all these experiments unequivocally confirm that Newtonian nanofluid flow can be consistently characterized by employing Nusselt number correlations obtained for single-phase heat transfer liquids such as water when the correct thermophysical properties of the nanofluid are utilized. It is also shown that the heat transfer enhancement provided by nanofluids equals the increase in the thermal conductivity of the nanofluid as compared to the base fluid independent of the nanoparticle concentration or material. These results demonstrate that no anomalous phenomena are involved in thermal conduction and forced convection based heat transfer of nanofluids. The experiments are theoretically supported by a fundamental similarity analysis of nanoparticle motion in nanofluid flow.
