  • Enabling real-time multi-messenger astrophysics discoveries with deep learning
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Nature reviews physics. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2522-5820. ; 1:10, s. 600-608
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Multi-messenger astrophysics is a fast-growing, interdisciplinary field that combines data, which vary in volume and speed of data processing, from many different instruments that probe the Universe using different cosmic messengers: electromagnetic waves, cosmic rays, gravitational waves and neutrinos. In this Expert Recommendation, we review the key challenges of real-time observations of gravitational wave sources and their electromagnetic and astroparticle counterparts, and make a number of recommendations to maximize their potential for scientific discovery. These recommendations refer to the design of scalable and computationally efficient machine learning algorithms; the cyber-infrastructure to numerically simulate astrophysical sources, and to process and interpret multi-messenger astrophysics data; the management of gravitational wave detections to trigger real-time alerts for electromagnetic and astroparticle follow-ups; a vision to harness future developments of machine learning and cyber-infrastructure resources to cope with the big-data requirements; and the need to build a community of experts to realize the goals of multi-messenger astrophysics. A group of experts suggests ways in which deep learning can be used to enhance the potential for discovery in multi-messenger astrophysics.

  • The SITS-UTMOST: A registry-based prospective study in Europe investigating the impact of regulatory approval of intravenous Actilyse in the extended time window (3-4.5 h) in acute ischaemic stroke
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: European stroke journal. - : SAGE Publications. - 2396-9881 .- 2396-9873. ; 1:3, s. 213-221
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The SITS-UTMOST (Safe Implementation of Thrombolysis in Upper Time window Monitoring Study) was a registry-based prospective study of intravenous alteplase used in the extended time window (3–4.5 h) in acute ischaemic stroke to evaluate the impact of the approval of the extended time window on routine clinical practice. Patients and methods Inclusion of at least 1000 patients treated within 3–4.5 h according to the licensed criteria and actively registered in the SITS-International Stroke Thrombolysis Registry was planned. Prospective data collection started 2 May 2012 and ended 2 November 2014. A historical cohort was identified for 2 years preceding May 2012. Clinical management and outcome were contrasted between patients treated within 3 h versus 3–4.5 h in the prospective cohort and between historical and prospective cohorts for the 3 h time window. Outcomes were functional independency (modified Rankin scale, mRS) 0–2, favourable outcome (mRS 0–1), and death at 3 months and symptomatic intracerebral haemorrhage (SICH) per SITS. Results 4157 patients from 81 centres in 12 EU countries were entered prospectively ( N = 1118 in the 3–4.5 h, N = 3039 in the 0–3 h time window) and 3454 retrospective patients in the 0–3 h time window who met the marketing approval conditions. In the prospective cohort, median arrival to treatment time was longer in the 3–4.5 h than 3 h window (79 vs. 55 min). Within the 3 h time window, treatment delays were shorter for prospective than historical patients (55 vs. 63). There was no significant difference between the 3–4.5 h versus 3 h prospective cohort with regard to percentage of reported SICH (1.6 vs. 1.7), death (11.6 vs. 11.1), functional independency (66 vs. 65) at 3 months or favourable outcome (51 vs. 50). Discussion Main weakness is the observational design of the study. Conclusion This study neither identified negative impact on treatment delay, nor on outcome, following extension of the approved time window to 4.5 h for use of alteplase in stroke.

  • Validation of the Surgical Preparedness Assessment in women with pelvic floor disorders
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: International Urogynecology Journal. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0937-3462 .- 1433-3023.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Introduction and hypothesisWe sought to further develop and validate the Surgical Preparedness Assessment (SPA) scale to evaluate patient preparedness for urogynecological surgery. MethodsThis was a planned ancillary analysis of a randomized controlled trial (RCT) evaluating the impact of a preoperative telehealth call on patient preparedness for urogynecological surgery. Patients completed the Preoperative Preparedness Questionnaire (PPQ), the modified Preparedness for Colorectal Cancer Surgery Questionnaire (PCSQ), the Pelvic Floor Distress Inventory (PFDI-20), the Satisfaction Decision Scale (SDS), and the Decision Regret Scale (DRS). Content validity was established through expert opinion and patient cognitive interviews. Factor analysis identified item grouping into domains. Cronbach's alpha reported internal consistency. Known group validity was assessed by comparing intervention arms. External validity was evaluated by comparing intervention arms and correlations with SDS and DRS. ResultsEleven items and 3 domains met the criteria (information needs, satisfaction and pain, and catheterization). Cronbach's alpha values were acceptable for domains and ranged from 0.74 to 0.93. SPA scores did not correlate with other patient-reported outcomes. Mean SPA scores were lower among women who received a telehealth call vs those who did not (1.30 & PLUSMN; 0.31 vs 1.51 & PLUSMN; 0.44; p = 0.002). ConclusionsThe content-valid SPA demonstrates high internal consistency and known group validity.

  • Low energy packed tower and caustic recovery for direct capture of CO2 from air
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Energy Procedia. - 1876-6102. ; 1:1, s. 1535-1542
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We used a 6.5 m tall packed tower prototype to study the capturing rate of CO2 from air. The tower was operated at a pressure drop of less than 27 pa in the packing at 0.7m/sec air speed with a counter current flow mode and with NaOH or KOH solution as the absorbent. The tower consumed an average of ~30 kJe per mole CO2. We found that via an intermittent operation with a 5% duty cycle, the fluid pumping work reduced by 90%. A novel process for removing carbonates ions from alkaline solutions based on titanate compounds is compared to the traditional lime cycle for the caustic recovery. The titanate process reduces the high-grade heat requirement by ~50%. The results from experimental data of leaching andprecipitation test support process design of the titanate cycle. In this paper, we also present the chemical process design.
