  • Accelerometer derived physical activity and subclinical coronary and carotid atherosclerosis : cross-sectional analyses in 22 703 middle-aged men and women in the SCAPIS study
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: BMJ Open. - : BMJ Publishing Group Ltd. - 2044-6055. ; 13:11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • OBJECTIVES: The aim included investigation of the associations between sedentary (SED), low-intensity physical activity (LIPA), moderate-to-vigorous intensity PA (MVPA) and the prevalence of subclinical atherosclerosis in both coronaries and carotids and the estimated difference in prevalence by theoretical reallocation of time in different PA behaviours.DESIGN: Cross-sectional.SETTING: Multisite study at university hospitals.PARTICIPANTS: A total of 22 670 participants without cardiovascular disease (51% women, 57.4 years, SD 4.3) from the population-based Swedish CArdioPulmonary bioImage study were included. SED, LIPA and MVPA were assessed by hip-worn accelerometer.PRIMARY AND SECONDARY OUTCOMES: Any and significant subclinical coronary atherosclerosis (CA), Coronary Artery Calcium Score (CACS) and carotid atherosclerosis (CarA) were derived from imaging data from coronary CT angiography and carotid ultrasound.RESULTS: High daily SED (>70% ≈10.5 hours/day) associated with a higher OR 1.44 (95% CI 1.09 to 1.91), for significant CA, and with lower OR 0.77 (95% CI 0.63 to 0.95), for significant CarA. High LIPA (>55% ≈8 hours/day) associated with lower OR for significant CA 0.70 (95% CI 0.51 to 0.96), and CACS, 0.71 (95% CI 0.51 to 0.97), but with higher OR for CarA 1.41 (95% CI 1.12 to 1.76). MVPA above reference level, >2% ≈20 min/day, associated with lower OR for significant CA (OR range 0.61-0.67), CACS (OR range 0.71-0.75) and CarA (OR range 0.72-0.79). Theoretical replacement of 30 min of SED into an equal amount of MVPA associated with lower OR for significant CA, especially in participants with high SED 0.84 (95% CI 0.76 to 0.96) or low MVPA 0.51 (0.36 to 0.73).CONCLUSIONS: MVPA was associated with a lower risk for significant atherosclerosis in both coronaries and carotids, while the association varied in strength and direction for SED and LIPA, respectively. If causal, clinical implications include avoiding high levels of daily SED and low levels of MVPA to reduce the risk of developing significant subclinical atherosclerosis.

  • Robust real-time applications in Timber
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: 2006 IEEE International Conference on Electro/information Technology. - Piscataway, NJ : IEEE Communications Society. - 0780395921 ; , s. 191-196
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Embedded systems are often operating under hard real-time constraints, for example in automotive applications. For such systems, robustness and reliability are crucial, which calls for rigorous system design and methodologies for validation. In this paper we advocate a design methodology for robust, realtime systems, based on Timber; a pure reactive system model that allows for formal reasoning about various system properties. We outline how system specifications in Timber can be "compiled" into efficient standalone executables for general light-weight microcontroller platforms. Methods for resource analysis and implications to system dimensioning and validation are further discussed.

  • High-speed echoes in the polar winter mesosphere: Infrasound as a probable cause
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Advances in Space Research. - : Elsevier. - 0273-1177 .- 1879-1948. ; 72:8, s. 3181-3201
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We considered three events on 4 November 2015, 22 December 2016, and 12 November 2018, when the signals travelling in the polar winter mesosphere with high horizontal velocities above 300 m/s were measured by the atmospheric radar ESRAD (Chilson et al., 1999) located at Esrange, near Kiruna in northern Sweden. We proposed four mechanisms of generation of such special cases of polar mesosphere echoes, e.g. high-speed PMWE, that involve microbaroms, i.e. infrasound waves at 0.1 - 0.35 Hz frequencies created by ocean swell. These mechanisms are (i) generation of viscous waves, (ii) generation of thermal waves, (iii) direct contributions of infrasound, and (iv) generation of secondary waves at sound dissipation. These processes necessarily accompany sound propagation in inhomogeneous, thermally conducting and viscous fluid (air). The four models were theoretically analysed and their efficiency was estimated. The infrasound measurements at the IS37 station (Gibbons et al., 2019) located about 170 km north-west from the ESRAD radar, modelled maps of the microbarom sources, infrasound propagation conditions and ionospheric conditions for these three PMWE events support the proposed models. Infrasound-generated thermal waves are suggested to be the most probable specific cause of the observed high-speed, high-aspect-ratio PMWE events. However, absence of in-situ infrasound and plasma measurements did not allow us to quantify contributions of individual physical mechanisms to the fast-travelling echoes generation.

  • Polar Mesosphere Winter Echoes and their relation to infrasound
  • 2020
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Polar Mesosphere Winter Echoes (PMWE) are radar echoes that originate from the mesosphere at 50-80 km altitude and are observed with VHF radars during equinox and winter seasons. Strong PMWE are relatively rare phenomena, in most cases they are observed when the lower ionosphere displays high ionisation. Interpretations of observational results concerning PMWE are controversial and the origin of the echoes is still under debate. Especially intriguing is that in some cases of strong PMWE, the measured horizontal speeds of the radar reflecting structures can exceed 300 m/s. Radar reflection (scattering) by infrasound waves at frequencies below about 2 Hz was suggested in order to explain these observations. We will give recent examples of PMWE events of high horizontal speed as observed with the 52 MHz MST radar (ESRAD) located at Esrange (68°N, 21ºE) in northern Sweden. Together with this we will analyse infrasound measurements made at ground-based stations near Kiruna (67.5°N, 20.13ºE) and at the infrasound station IS37 (69°N, 18ºE) in Norway during these events. We discuss prospective relations between PMWE and the microbaroms that are generated by ocean swell in the North Atlantic.

  • Photometric and ionization masses of meteors with simultaneous EISCAT UHF radar and intensified video observations
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Journal of Geophysical Research. - : American Geophysical Union (AGU). - 0148-0227 .- 2156-2202. ; 117, s. A09323-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • There are significant uncertainties in the calculation of photometric and ionization masses of meteors, particularly those derived from meteor head echoes observed by high power, large aperture radars. Simultaneous observations of meteors with the EISCAT UHF tristatic system and narrow field two-station intensified video were conducted in October 2007; 11 hours of data produced four useful meteors observed on all three radar receivers and both cameras. The positions and speeds calculated on the two systems generally agree to within the observational uncertainty. The photometric and ionization masses for each meteor were calculated using several values of luminous efficiency and ionization probability from literature, and all of these masses were found to agree to within the estimated error in the methods. More observations are required to select among the various values of ionization coefficient and luminous efficiency.

  • A novel infrared imager for studies of hydroxyl and oxygen nightglow emissions in the mesopause above northern Scandinavia
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Atmospheric Measurement Techniques. - 1867-1381 .- 1867-8548. ; 17:5, s. 1561-1576
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The paper describes technical characteristics and presents the first scientific results of a novel infrared imaging system (imager) for studies of nightglow emissions coming from the hydroxyl (OH) and molecular oxygen (O2) layers in the mesopause region (80–100 km) above northern Scandinavia. The OH imager was put into operation in November 2022 at the Swedish Institute of Space Physics in Kiruna (67.86° N, 20.42° E; 400 m altitude). The OH imager records selected emission lines in the OH(3-1) band near 1500 nm to obtain intensity and temperature maps at around 87 km altitude. In addition, the OH imager registers infrared emissions coming from the O2 IR A-band airglow at 1268.7 nm in order to obtain O2 intensity maps at a slightly higher altitude, around 94 km. This technique allows the tracing of wave disturbances in both horizontal and vertical domains in the mesopause region. Validation and comparison of the OH(3-1) rotational temperature with collocated lidar and Aura Microwave Limb Sounder (MLS) satellite temperatures are performed. The first scientific results obtained from the OH imager for the first winter season (2022–2023) are discussed.

  • Machine-learning-driven biomarker discovery for the discrimination between allergic and irritant contact dermatitis
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America. - : Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. - 0027-8424 .- 1091-6490. ; 117:52, s. 33474-33485
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Contact dermatitis tremendously impacts the quality of life of suffering patients. Currently, diagnostic regimes rely on allergy testing, exposure specification, and follow-up visits; however, distinguishing the clinical phenotype of irritant and allergic contact dermatitis remains challenging. Employing integrative transcriptomic analysis and machine-learning approaches, we aimed to decipher disease-related signature genes to find suitable sets of biomarkers. A total of 89 positive patch-test reaction biopsies against four contact allergens and two irritants were analyzed via microarray. Coexpression network analysis and Random Forest classification were used to discover potential biomarkers and selected biomarker models were validated in an independent patient group. Differential gene-expression analysis identified major gene-expression changes depending on the stimulus. Random Forest classification identified CD47, BATF, FASLG, RGS16, SYNPO, SELE, PTPN7, WARS, PRC1, EXO1, RRM2, PBK, RAD54L, KIFC1, SPC25, PKMYT, HISTH1A, TPX2, DLGAP5, TPX2, CH25H, and IL37 as potential biomarkers to distinguish allergic and irritant contact dermatitis in human skin. Validation experiments and prediction performances on external testing datasets demonstrated potential applicability of the identified biomarker models in the clinic. Capitalizing on this knowledge, novel diagnostic tools can be developed to guide clinical diagnosis of contact allergies.

  • From meteors to space safety : dynamical models and radar measurements of space objects
  • 2022
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Every day the Earth's atmosphere is bombarded by 10-200 metric tons of dust-sized particles and larger pieces of material from space called meteoroids. Dust and meteoroids come from parent bodies such as comets and asteroids, which are remnants from the formation of the solar system. In addition to natural objects, geospace contains artificial satellites and space debris that needs to be monitored to reduce the risk of collisions. Studies of all these kinds of space objects form a cross-disciplinary research field that stretches from meteors to space safety. The primary goal of this thesis has been to rigorously connect measurements and their uncertainties with high-level analysis and dynamical simulations of distributions. An automated radar data analysis algorithm was developed for meteor head echo measurements. The analysis algorithm is able to produce realistic uncertainties for each individual meteor event, including the meteoroid orbit. Many of the resulting probability distributions are non-Gaussian, which needs to be accounted for. The analysis algorithm was applied to interferometric high-power large-aperture MU radar data in a case study on high altitude meteors. The study found that 74 out of 106,000 meteors appeared higher than 130 km and a few confirmed detections reached up to 150 km altitude.Comet 21P/Giacobini–Zinner is the parent body of the meteoroid stream giving rise to the October Draconid meteor shower. The meteoroid stream was simulated accounting for parent body orbital uncertainties to estimate meteor shower parameters. The simulation was able to model the unexpected mass distribution observed in the 2011 and 2012 October Draconids. It also successfully predicted a meteor outburst in 2018. Further, methods to reduce the computation time of meteoroid stream simulations using importance sampling were derived and implemented on a test model.EISCAT radar measurements were performed to study space debris from the Kosmos-1408 satellite, which had been destroyed and fragmented in orbit on 15 November, 2021. A novel method to estimate the size distribution of debris objects was developed. Data from two EISCAT radars were used to demonstrate a new initial orbit determination technique, yielding good agreement with known catalogue orbits. Finally, the detectability of near-Earth objects (NEOs) with the EISCAT~3D radar currently under construction was simulated. It was predicted that as many as seven temporarily captured NEOs, i.e. minimoons, could be discovered per year depending on the amount of allocated observation time. The predictions also show that hundreds of NEOs could be tracked yearly to improve their orbits.

  • High-altitude meteors detected by the interferometric MU radar
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Monthly notices of the Royal Astronomical Society. - : Oxford University Press. - 0035-8711 .- 1365-2966. ; 517:2, s. 3024-3033
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We have re-analysed part of the middle and upper atmosphere (MU) radar meteor head echo data set collected during 2009–2010 and confirmed the existence of a rare high-altitude radar meteor population reaching up to ∼150 km altitude. The number of detections decreases significantly as a function of initial altitude. Out of the total amount of 106 000 events, 74 had an initial altitude >130 km while four of those had an initial altitude >145 km. High-altitude radar meteor observations have been reported before, e.g. using the EISCAT VHF radar and the Jicamarca Radio Observatory. The main novelty of this study is that the observations were performed using methods that render the final data set unambiguous in direction of arrival together with rigorously tested analysis routines that were validated by noisy raw data simulations. Due to our experimental set-up the maximum detectable range was limited to 148 km. Hence, we cannot confirm or deny the existence of radar meteors above that altitude.
