  • 2011
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This document provides an overview of the proposed innovations and activities in Task 1.2 of Work Package 1 (WP1) of the ARTIST4G project, related to interference avoidance. Focus is on the technical approaches applicable at layer 2, which are grouped into five different classes of innovations related to clustering & user grouping, inter-cell interference coordination, coordinated scheduling, scheduling for joint processing and gametheory based scheduling. Descriptions of the proposed innovations are given including basic ideas, potential of performance, simulation results, realization options and possible implementation restrictions.

  • 2012
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In this document we provide performance assessments of the most promising techniques that were studied within Work Package 1 (WP1) of the ARTIST4G project related to interference avoidance. The results are based on evolved techniques that were identified and classified in deliverable D1.1 and investigated in deliverable D1.2 and D1.3, as well as novel alternative techniques that are introduced and assessed in this document.Based on the insights from these performance results we provide a synthetic perspective over the most promising solutions for interference avoidance. We argue that these solutions can reach a satisfactory trade-off in terms of performance benefits vs complexity of implementation. Some of these techniques are also identified as complementary techniques towards an integrated interference avoidance concept.

  • Analytic framework for the mutual information cumulants of different MIMO channels
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: 53rd IEEE Global Communications Conference, GLOBECOM 2010; Miami, FL; United States; 6 December 2010 through 10 December 2010. - 9781424456383 ; , s. Art. no. 5683814-
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, we present a general analytical framework for the exact mutual information (MI) cumulants of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems with perfect receiver channel state information (CSI) and no transmitter CSI. Our derivation is based on a recent parameterization of the joint ordered eigenvalue probability density function (PDF) [1], that encompasses both uncorrelated/semi-correlated Rayleigh channels as well as uncorrelated Rician channels. In addition, we extend our framework to account for the cumulants of doubly-correlated Rayleigh channels and also to deduce tractable expressions in the high Signal-to-Noise ratio (SNR) regime. The cumulants are particularly useful to study all high-order statistics (HOS) of the MI; in fact, they can be used to express the MI mean and variance as a finite sum of determinants. Our analytical expressions are then validated via Monte-Carlo simulations with the attained accuracy being excellent in all cases.

  • Robust Location-Aided Beam Alignment in Millimeter Wave Massive MIMO
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Proceedings - IEEE Global Communications Conference, GLOBECOM. - 2334-0983 .- 2576-6813. ; 2018-January, s. 1-6
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Location-aided beam alignment has been proposed recently as a potential approach for fast link establishment in millimeter wave (mmWave) massive MIMO (mMIMO) communications. However, due to mobility and other imperfections in the estimation process, the spatial information obtained at the base station (BS) and the user (UE) is likely to be noisy, degrading beam alignment performance. In this paper, we introduce a robust beam alignment framework in order to exhibit resilience with respect to this problem. We first recast beam alignment as a decentralized coordination problem where BS and UE seek coordination on the basis of correlated yet individual position information. We formulate the optimum beam alignment solution as the solution of a Bayesian team decision problem. We then propose a suite of algorithms to approach optimality with reduced complexity. The effectiveness of the robust beam alignment procedure, compared with classical designs, is then verified on simulation settings with varying location information accuracies.

  • User Coordination for Fast Beam Training in FDD Multi-User Massive MIMO
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). - 1536-1276 .- 1558-2248. ; 20:5, s. 2961-2976
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Massive multiple-input multiple-output (mMIMO) communications are one of the enabling technologies of 5G and beyond networks. While prior work indicates that mMIMO networks employing time division duplexing have a significant capacity growth potential, deploying mMIMO in frequency division duplexing (FDD) networks remains problematic. The two main difficulties in FDD networks are the scalability of the downlink reference signals and the overhead associated with the required uplink feedback for channel state information (CSI) acquisition. To address these difficulties, most existing methods utilize assumptions on the radio environment such as channel sparsity or angular reciprocity. In this work, we propose a novel cooperative method for a scalable and low-overhead approach to FDD mMIMO under the so-called grid-of-beams architecture. The key idea behind our scheme lies in the exploitation of the near-common signal propagation paths that are often found across several mobile users located in nearby regions, through a coordination mechanism. In doing so, we leverage the recently specified device-to-device communications capability in 5G networks. Specifically, we design beam selection algorithms capable of striking a balance between CSI acquisition overhead and multi-user interference mitigation. The selection exploits statistical information, through so-called covariance shaping. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms, which prove particularly well-suited to rapidly-varying channels with short coherence time.

  • Mutual information statistics and beamforming performance analysis of optimized LoS MIMO systems
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Communications. - 1558-0857. ; 58:11, s. 3316-3329
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper provides a systematic mutual information(MI) and multichannel beamforming (MBF) characterizationof optimized multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication systems operating in Ricean fading. These optimized configurations are of high practical importance since, contrary to the common belief, benefit from the presence of direct Line-of-Sight (LoS) components and deliver maximum multiplexing gains, by deploying specifically designed antenna arrays at bothends. In the following, using elements from random matrixtheory, novel analytical expressions are derived for the exact and asymptotic MI statistics while the prevalent Gaussian approximation is examined. Moreover, new explicit expressions for the marginal eigenvalues are deduced which are thereafter used to analyze the BF performance of the associated eigenmodes in terms of Signal-to-Noise ratio (SNR) outage probability. We note that all derived formulas are given in tractable determinant formand therefore allow for fast and efficient computation and also yield an excellent match with Monte-Carlo simulations, under different fading scenarios and model parameters.
