  • Forskarnas galleri #4 : Förnuft eller känsla? Fakta, forskning och föreställningar
  • 2018

  • Excursions into marginality : digitalised memories of militarised masculinity in Rhodesian understandings of self
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Heroism and Global Politics. - : Routledge. - 9781138313118 - 9780429457777 ; , s. 101-121
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the last couple of years, a few references to Rhodesian pasts have appeared in European and US media. A widely distributed photograph depicted Dylann Storm Roof, who killed nine African Americans during prayer service in Charleston’s Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in a one-man terrorist attack, wearing a jacket decorated with the Rhodesian and apartheid South African fl ags ( Hanson 2015 ). In a different, yet discursively similar context of white supremacy, the 2014 UKIP EU elections poster-boy Andre Lampitt was suspended because of his racist references to Black Africans – references he argued were sanctioned by his experience of growing up in Rhodesia ( Chapman and Chorley 2014 ). Tucked away from the gaze of the public eye, Rhodesian militaria, authentic and fake, is being sold and bought at good prices across the globe. Rhodesian Security Forces uniforms are especially popular because of the very distinct camoufl age pattern, which is considered one of the most well-designed among collectors. 2 The relatively sudden appearance of Rhodesian references in European and US public media overlap with the rise in and general acceptance of right-wing, decidedly White nationalist activity in former colonial powers, 3 in independent settler states that they created, 4 and in states in their close proximity. 5 Interestingly, to someone who over the last decade and a half has followed the development of Rhodesian presence on the Internet, it also overlaps with an explosion of videos, webpages, and web-forums concerning Rhodesian-ness in different forms.

  • Fleeing through the globalised education system : the role of violence and conflict in international student migration
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Globalisation, Societies and Education. - : Taylor & Francis. - 1476-7724 .- 1476-7732. ; 14:3, s. 390-402
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article connects directly to the globalisation of both education and conflict, and attends to the intersection between these phenomena, by focusing on conflict-induced student migration, an area, which has until recently been neglected in studies of higher education and migration, and peace and conflict research. The focus is on the very intersection of these research traditions in trying to understand how increasing globalised student migration is intertwined with the internationalisation of higher education and violent conflicts. The research on which this article is based was carried out at Malmö University, Sweden. The focus is on mapping the linkages between violent conflicts and student migration, using a mixed methods design.

  • Glocal Resistance and De-colonisation: : Civil Society in Khatami’s Islam, Dialogue and Civil Society (2013) and its Relevance to our Reading of Popular Protest and Political Participation
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of Resistance Studies. - : Irene Publishing. - 2001-9947. ; 6:2, s. 178-195
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This piece concerns civil society as conceptualised in Khatami’s book Islam, Dialogue and Civil Society, and in a wider sense the Dialogue among Civilisations and Cultures paradigm and the UN year of Dialogue among Civilisations (2001). In this particular text, Khatami discusses civil society in relation to de-colonising spaces, with particular references to West Asia, the Islamic world and the ‘West.’ However, his discussion bears relevance to other spaces with experience of colonial imperial domination and occupation, historically and contemporarily. While first published a decade before the Arab Spring, it bears relevance also to the clamours for political participation and social development, which so pervaded the risings in West Asia and North Africa, including the oft forgotten Sudan. In this particular discussion of civil society, the focus is on showing the global relevance of Khatami’s conceptualisation of civil society as it emanates from the Dialogue among Cultures and Civilisations initiative, in a world where strategic disorder seems to be an increasing answer to resistance practices following local demands for political participation as well as independence from Western political economic structures of dominance—i.e. in spaces attempting to decolonise.

  • It couldn't be anything innocent : Negotiating gender in patriarchal-racial spaces
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Manning the Nation. - : Weaver Press. - 9781779221315 - 9781779220691 ; , s. 115-126
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The Rhodesian settler project depended on the co-operation with black men, and on the Othering of them. Masculinity was a vital part of this dou- ble movement of practical proximity and narrative distance; cross-racial co- operation between men concerning the control of women, and the sexuali- sation of the ‘African’. The racialised discourse on ‘African’ masculinity contributes to the preservation of distance between the African Other and the European Self. The latter generally evades being objectified and stud- ied, as it is itself the master of objectification of others. Consequently, sci- entific curiosity has mostly been directed towards those who are construct- ed as different and exotic (McFadden, 2000), rather than towards those who construe themselves as Norm. Research on white Zimbabweans is lacking. In this chapter we examine the performance, reproduction and contestation of masculinity among white Zimbabweans. Those white Zimbabweans whose voices are represented below belong to a rapidly shrinking category of Zimbabweans. They are Eurasian second generation commercial farm- ers. The voices are Peter, Beatrice, John, Louisa and Patricia’s. The inter- views were conducted in September and October 2000, on what were then their farms in eastern and northern Zimbabwe.

  • Recapturing the Lost : Digitalized Memories of the Rhodesian Bush War
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Conflict and society. - : Berghahn Books. - 2164-4543 .- 2164-4551. ; 3:1, s. 144-167
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Rhodesians occupy a very specific digitalized time-space bubble at the very edges of a margin that researchers think of as “past.” In this study, I trace the memorization of the Rhodesian Bush War on YouTube, of what it was like to fight for a dream and see it crumble in an isolated and highly racialized society. Through narrative analysis focusing on identity formation and social networks of relationships, a military-romantic story of racialized masculine heroism, suffering and sacrifice is pieced together, forming a globally shared Rhodesian space-time bubble of meaningfulness, making it an active part of the present as much as a remnant of the past.

  • A matter of difference?: Family planning and gendered discourses on sexuality and reproductive decision-making among black and white Zimbabweans
  • 2004
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Based on field and archival research, the thesis explores reproductive decision-making in contemporary Zimbabwe, as well as the historical background of current discourses on sexuality and reproduction. Zimbabwe (Southern Rhodesia) was created and structured by a European Imperial diaspora, based on racialised patriarchal structures of control. White rule lasted from 1896 to 1979, a period during which the patriarchal structures of coloniser and colonised were increasingly intertwined, as they were implicated both in conflicts over, and joint struggles for increased control of women, sexuality and reproduction. With the point of departure in Zimbabwe's colonial history, the thesis analyses how reproductive decision-making relates to discourses of race, sexuality and gender, and on what grounds Zimbabwean men and women make reproductive decisions. Feminist theories as well as theories of fertility decline are explored in the search for a theoretical framework, which may help us understand the Zimbabwean situation, which seems to contradict conventional theories on fertility decline. The main conclusions of the thesis are, that the historical background has consequences for contemporary practices and discourses on sexuality and reproduction; that women's dependency on men is under-theorised in theories of fertility change; and that gender equality and economic growth are not necessarily required for setting a trend of fertility decline in motion.
