  • Scenography and Art History: Performance Design and Visual Culture
  • 2021
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Scenography and Art History reimagines scenography as a critical concept for art history, and is the first book to demonstrate the importance and usefulness of this concept for art historians and scholars in related fields. It provides a vital evaluation of the contemporary importance of scenography as a critical tool for art historians and scholars from related branches of study addressing phenomena such as witchy designs, Early Modern festival books, live rock performances, digital fashion photography, and outdoor dance interventions. With its nuanced and detailed case studies, this book is an innovative contribution to ongoing debates within art history and visual studies concerning multisensory events. It extends the existing literature by demonstrating the importance of a reimagined scenography concept for comprehending historical and contemporary art histories and visual cultures more broadly. The book contends that scenography is no longer restricted to the traditional space of the theatre, but has become an important concept for approaching art historical and contemporary objects and events. It explores scenography not solely as a critical approach and theoretical concept, but also as an important practice linked with unrecognized labour and broader political, social and gendered issues in a great variety of contexts, such as festive culture, sacred settings, fashion, film, or performing arts. Designed as a key resource for students, teachers and researchers in art history, visual studies, and related subjects, the book, through its cross-disciplinary frame, does consider, implicitly and explicitly, the roles of both scenography and art in society.

  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Teaterbilder. Studier i visuell representation, Red. Bia Mankell, 2009..

  • Costume and the Modernist Body: Fashioning August Strindberg
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Performance Costume: New Perspectives and Methods, Eds. Sofia Pantouvaki & Peter McNeill. - London : Bloomsbury. - 9781350098800 ; , s. 255-259
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Employing a fashion perspective, this snapshot explores Swedish scenographer Knut Ström’s costume sketches, made in Düsseldorf in 1915-18, for his production of August Strindberg’s A Dream Play. In Ström’s sketches, the main character, the Daughter of Indra, is portrayed as a modernist woman in a slim dress and short hair. Drawing on Caroline Evans’ definition of the modernistic body and the renegotiated perceptions of the ideal female figure in the early 1900s, the text discusses how fashion and the new view of the female body were linked at the time. The ‘modernist body’ was about a clothed body in motion, a new, streamlined silhouette and a female body with agency. Ström’s staging of the Daughter of Indra as a modernist woman gives the character visual impact and anchors her in the process of social change that was underway at the time.

  • Doftande museum vidgar intrycken : Exhibition experience: the scented museum
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Alba. Om kultur, vetenskap och samhälle.. - 1403-5448. ; 2015:150902
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Scent triggers other experiences and memories than visual stimuli. Invisible and elusive, it still affects us very strongly, and the sense of smell can evoke both emotional and physical responses. How can scent be understood as a bearer of meaning? In this article scent in the museum is discussed – as art and artefact, and as a medium to convey the mood of a time and an understanding of spatiality. One way to invite scent into the museum is to present fragrance as art. L’Osmothèque outside Paris is an olfactory archive for lost and forgotten fragrances. The museum supports the art of perfumery by collecting and preserving important works from perfume history. Visitors can smell the perfumes from bygone eras and experience the scent of history. Perfume creation is presented as a form of artistic expression. A similar approach was used at the exhibition Art of Scent 1889-2012 at the Museum of Art and Design (New York 2013). Perfume was exhibited as artwork, and the scents themselves played the leading role, without bottles or marketing, in an exhibition where visitors smelled the perfumes through specially designed scent dispensers. Scent as a bearer of meaning in the museum is still relatively unexplored. It is fundamentally about communicating through multiple senses – and creating more diverse exhibitions – but it is also about conveying new aspects of culture.
