    • Mounting evidence from proxy records suggests that variations in solar activity have played a significant role in triggering past climate changes. However, the mechanisms for sun-climate links remain a topic of debate. Here we present a high-resolution summer sea-surface temperature (SST) record covering the past 9300 yr from a site located at the present-day boundary between polar and Atlantic surface-water masses. The record is age constrained via the identification of 15 independently dated tephra markers from terrestrial archives, circumventing marine reservoir age variability problems. Our results indicate a close link between solar activity and SSTs in the northern North Atlantic during the past 4000 yr; they suggest that the climate system in this area is more susceptible to the influence of solar variations during cool periods with less vigorous ocean circulation. Furthermore, the high-resolution SST record indicates that climate in the North Atlantic regions follows solar activity variations on multidecadal to centennial time scales.

  • High-resolution OSL dating of loess in Adventdalen, Svalbard : Late Holocene dust activity and permafrost development

    • There is considerable uncertainty over the nature and causes of Holocene dust activity in the Arctic, and its links to climatic changes. Loess deposits act as near-source archives of dust deposition and provide a means to address these uncertainties. Here we develop a fully independent age model for a loess core taken in Adventdalen, Svalbard, based on 136 quartz luminescence ages taken at 2 cm intervals. This represents the most detailed luminescence dating analysis undertaken to date on a sedimentary archive. Extensive laboratory tests and stratigraphic consistency indicate that the quartz luminescence ages are reliable. Together with grain size and cryostratigraphic analyses, as well as stratigraphic investigation of an adjacent loess exposure, the exceptional detail of the chronology combined with Bayesian age modelling uniquely allows changes in loess accumulation rates, particle size and permafrost development to be reconstructed over the last 3000 yrs on 101–103 yr timescales. The results show that loess deposition was mostly continuous over this interval, albeit with a short period of reworking or non-aeolian sedimentation during the Little Ice Age. Permafrost development in the loess is dominantly syngenetic, with ice contents increasing with depth. There is considerable variability in loess mass accumulation rate over the late Holocene, with peaks occurring during the last 250 yrs, as well as at 750–900, 1050–1200, 1400–1600, 1900–2450 and possibly 2700–3000 a. These peaks generally coincide with increased coarse silt deposition, potentially suggesting a link with greater wind activity. However, the peaks also seem to coincide with possible warm phases on Svalbard, which would rather imply that temperature-driven sediment availability in glaciofluvial source areas is the main control on dustiness in Adventdalen. In any case, the rates of loess deposition in the Adventdalen core are exceptionally high globally (up to 0.35 cm yr−1/2900 g m−2 yr−1 sedimentation and mass accumulation rates, respectively), and if representative of wider patterns across Svalbard, may suggest that the archipelago is a more important high latitude dust source than previously realised.

    • Wind-abraded cobbles (ventifacts) and aeolian sand are known from the sandy-gravelly coastal areas of south-western Sweden, especially in association with raised deltas. Ventifacts are recorded on at least two different stratigraphic levels, at some sites atop glaciofluvial sediment, at other sites atop littoral deposits, and in some places at both levels, while aeolian sand usually forms a surficial cover. The formation of ventifacts has usually been coupled to abrasion due to katabatic winds from the retreating ice sheet or with periglacial climate during the Younger Dryas stadial (12.8–11.7 ka).To determine the timing of these deflation events, we have applied a combination of dating methods to ventifacts and associated sediments on top of an ice-contact delta at Veinge, south-western Sweden. Quartz and feldspar luminescence dating as well as portable luminescence profiling has been used for littoral and aeolian sediments over- and underlying deflation surfaces, while rock surface luminescence burial dating and paired 14C–10Be cosmogenic nuclide dating were conducted on ventifacts. The results show that a first deflation event occurred c. 16.5 ka, just after deglaciation and prior to a regional transgression that peaked around 15.7 ka. At 12.4–11.4 ka, during the Younger Dryas stadial, a new set of ventifacts formed on the surface of the exposed littoral sands and gravels. Some wind abrasion also occurred in the early Holocene, but at c. 8.5 ka the surface was covered by aeolian sand, up to 2.5 m thick.The combination of different dating methods have allowed us to draw more informed conclusions on the timing and duration of these wind abrasion/transport events than would have been possible from the use of only single-method dating. It has also made it possible to infer some environmental conditions during deposition. For example, both glaciofluvial and littoral deposits show evidence of incomplete bleaching of the luminescence signal. This suggests short subaerial transport and brief reworking by waves, respectively, though bleaching conditions improved during shore regression. Rock surface burial luminescence profiles reveal that some ventifacts were repeatedly exposed, but that later event(s) were shorter in duration as indicated by quartz-feldspar age comparisons.

Quartz and feldspar luminescence dating as well as portable luminescence profiling has been used for the over- and underlying sediments, while rock surface luminescence burial dating and paired 14C10Be cosmogenic nuclide dating were done on ventifacts.   • Batch processing of tree-ring samples for radiocarbon analysis

    • We here present a comparison of methods for the pretreatment of a batch of tree rings for high-precision measurement of radiocarbon at the Aarhus AMS Centre (AARAMS), Aarhus University, Denmark. The aim was to develop an efficient and high-Throughput method able to pretreat ca. 50 samples at a time. We tested two methods for extracting α-cellulose from wood to find the most optimal for our use. One method used acetic acid, the other used HCl acid for the delignification. The testing was conducted on background 14C samples, in order to assess the effect of the different pretreatment methods on low-Activity samples. Furthermore, the extracted wood and cellulose fractions were analyzed using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, which showed a successful extraction of α-cellulose from the samples. Cellulose samples were pretreated at AARAMS, and the graphitization and radiocarbon analysis of these samples were done at both AARAMS and the radiocarbon dating laboratory at Lund University to compare the graphitization and AMS machine performance. No significant offset was found between the two sets of measurements. Based on these tests, the pretreatment of tree rings for high-precision radiocarbon analysis at AARAMS will henceforth use HCI for the delignification.

  • Roadmap for a precision-medicine initiative in the Nordic region

    • The Nordic region, comprising primarily Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden, has many of the necessary characteristics for being at the forefront of genome-based precision medicine. These include egalitarian and universal healthcare, expertly curated patient and population registries, biobanks, large population-based prospective cohorts linked to registries and biobanks, and a widely embraced sense of social responsibility that motivates public engagement in biomedical research. However, genome-based precision medicine can be achieved only through coordinated action involving all actors in the healthcare sector. Now is an opportune time to organize scientists in the Nordic region, together with other stakeholders including patient representatives, governments, pharmaceutical companies, academic institutions and funding agencies, to initiate a Nordic Precision Medicine Initiative. We present a roadmap for how this organization can be created. The Initiative should facilitate research, clinical trials and knowledge transfer to meet regional and global health challenges.
