  • Investigating Surface Reactivity of a Ni-Rich Cathode Material toward CO2, H2O, and O2 Using Ambient Pressure X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: ACS Applied Energy Materials. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 2574-0962. ; 6:22, s. 11458-11467
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Layered Ni-rich transition metal oxide materials are considered the most promising cathodes for use in commercial Li-ion batteries. Due to their instability in air, an impurity layer forms during storage under ambient conditions, and this layer increases electrochemical polarization during charging and discharging, which ultimately leads to a lower cycling capacity. In this work, we found that storage of the LiNi0.8Mn0.1Co0.1O2 (NMC 811) material in ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) can restore the surface by reducing the amount of native carbonate species in the impurity layer. In this work, in situ soft X-ray ambient pressure photoelectron spectroscopy is used to directly follow the interaction between common gases found in air and the NMC 811 surface. During gas exposure of the NMC 811 surface to pure CO2, O2, and a mixture of both pure gases, surface-adsorbed CO2 or/and O2 were detected; however, permanent changes could not be identified under UHV after the gas exposure. In contrast, a permanent increase in metal hydroxide species was observed on the sample surface following H2O vapor exposure, and an increased intensity in the carboxylate peak was observed after exposure to a mixture of CO2/O2/H2O. Thus, the irreversible degradation reaction with CO2 is triggered in the presence of H2O (on relevant time scales defined by the experiment). Additional measurements revealed that X-ray irradiation induces the formation of metal carbonate species on the NMC 811 surface under CO2 and H2O vapor pressure.

  • Chemical Understanding of the Limited Site-Specificity in Molecular Inner-Shell Photofragmentation
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physical Chemistry Letters. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1948-7185. ; 9:5, s. 1156-1163
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In many cases fragmentation of molecules upon inner-shell ionization is very unspecific with respect to the initially localized ionization site. Often this finding is interpreted in terms of an equilibration of internal energy into vibrational degrees of freedom after Auger decay. We investigate the X-ray photofragmentation of ethyl trifluoroacetate upon core electron ionization at environmentally distinct carbon sites using photoelectron-photoion-photoion coincidence measurements and ab initio electronic structure calculations. For all four carbon ionization sites, the Auger decay weakens the same bonds and transfers the two charges to opposite ends of the molecule, which leads to a rapid dissociation into three fragments, followed by further fragmentation steps. The lack of site specificity is attributed to the character of the dicationic electronic states after Auger decay instead of a fast equilibration of internal energy.

  • BCG vaccine modulates intestinal and systemic response to ß-lactoglobulin
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Pediatric Allergy and Immunology. - : Wiley. - 0905-6157 .- 1399-3038. ; 15:5, s. 408-414
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • ß-Lactoglobulin (BLG) is a clinically important antigen in cow's milk and one of the major allergens causing cow's milk allergy. Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccination has been suggested to modify immune response possibly decreasing the risk of allergy to some antigens in both human and experimental animals. In the present study, we have analyzed whether the early BCG vaccination has any effect on the markers of systemic and gastrointestinal (GI) sensitization to BLG. We immunized two groups of Hooded-Lister rat puppets with intraperitoneal injections of native BLG at 43 and 62 days with pertussis vaccine as adjuvant, one group receiving additionally BCG. The animals were then fed native and denatured milk products twice weekly from 73 to 131 days of age, when they were killed. Control group was not vaccinated and received normal rat forage. Total immunoglobulin E (IgE) levels and BLG-specific IgG1 and IgG2a concentrations were determined in serum samples. Spontaneous interleukin (IL)-4 and interferon (IFN)-? production from duodenal specimens were measured, and the inflammatory cells were quantitated in specimens from different sections of the GI tract. Administration of BCG simultaneously with BLG resulted in reduced IgE concentration in serum, while the specific IgG1 and IgG2a antibody responses and the spontaneous secretion of IL-4 and IFN-? were not affected. Furthermore, BCG-induced eosinophilic infiltration and increase of intraepithelial lymphocytes (IEL) in the GI mucosa, and a trend toward increased number of lamina propria mononuclear inflammatory cells in the colon (BCG compared with BLG, p = 0.09, BCG compared with controls, p = 0.02). Controls showed increment of IgG1 response in comparison with the BLG group (p = 0.04) and increase of mucosal eosinophilic infiltration. The BCG modified the response to BLG both at the systemic level as shown by decrease of total IgE and at GI mucosa where increase of eosinophilic infiltration and increased number of IEL were seen. Increment of IgG1 level and eosinophils in the controls might be related with the lack of modulatory effect of pertussis vaccination. A shift of response toward the lower GI tract after BCG immunization as shown by a trend for increase of mononuclear inflammatory cells in colon lamina propria mimics disease development in some cases of clinical food allergy, and emphasizes the need for evaluation of the changes in the whole GI tract in food allergy models.

  • From synchrotrons for XFELs : The soft x-ray near-edge spectrum of the ESCA molecule
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics B: Atomic, Molecular and Optical Physics. - : IOP Publishing. - 0953-4075 .- 1361-6455. ; 53:24
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A predictive understanding of soft x-ray near-edge absorption spectra of small molecules is an enduring theoretical challenge and of current interest for x-ray probes of molecular dynamics. We report the experimental absorption spectrum for the electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis (ESCA) molecule (ethyl trifluoroacetate) near the carbon 1s absorption edge between 285-300 eV. The ESCA molecule with four chemically distinct carbon sites has previously served as a theoretical benchmark for photoelectron spectra and now for photoabsorption spectra. We report a simple edge-specific approach for systematically expanding standard basis sets to properly describe diffuse Rydberg orbitals and the importance of triple excitations in equation-of-motion coupled-cluster calculations of the energy interval between valence and Rydberg excitations.
