  • Populism and populism studies Theories and contributions
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Discourse Approaches to Politics, Society and Culture. - 1569-9463. ; 101, s. 17-34
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this chapter, we will lay the foundation for the case studies in the subsequent chapters. To this end, we will make explicit our understanding of populism, which links the individual contexts discussed in the remainder of this book. In this book, we define populism as a political strategy and/or practice, realised in discourse, that is based on a dichotomy between "the people", who are unified by their will, and an outgroup whose actions are not in the interest of the people, with a leader safeguarding the interests of the people against the outgroup. In addition, we will discuss relevant previous literature to identify the research gap in the study of populism and language, and argue how our book contributes to filling that gap. To achieve these two aims, we will first sketch the common theoretical background that informs all chapters of the book. We will develop a definition of populism and populist parties, paying particular attention to differences between right- and left-wing populism and indeed the validity of those terms themselves. Following on from those general considerations, we narrow the focus to the question how populism is realised in discourse and language use. We ask how populism and discourse are related and discuss the notion of populism as discourse. To conclude our theoretical discussion, we ask why populism has become a globalphenomenon and review what we know so far about voters and supporters of populist parties, candidates and causes. Moving from theory to a review of relevant previous works, the second main section of this chapter will position the book in relation to past discourse analytical research on populism. We start with a review of works on populism as it is enacted on social media, before proceeding to discuss what we already know about populism and language in European contexts. As this book is specifically about the way supporters of populist parties use language, we round off the second section of this chapter by reviewing work on that aspect. We conclude the chapter by demonstrating how the present book draws together three important aspects of populism - its expression on social media, its character across Europe and the role of supporters - and investigates them from a discourse analytical and linguistic point of view. First, however, let us turn to theoretical frameworks.

  • Rendering the ungraspable graspable : the use of metaphors in Swedish palliative cancer care
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Palliative Medicine. - : Sage Publications. - 0269-2163 .- 1477-030X. ; 30:6, s. NP364-NP364
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Good communication is of utmost importance in all forms of cancer care and especially so in the palliative context. To render the ungraspable graspable, metaphors are frequently used drawing on their capacity to capture the intangible in terms of more familiar experiences. For instance, to die from cancer can be described as ’coming to the end of a life journey’ or ’losing a battle’. Metaphors are largely language and culture specific. Today’s increasingly multicultural societies require particular awareness in order to achieve dignified, individualized palliative cancer care. This project aims to strengthen the scientific foundation for the use of metaphors in Swedish palliative cancer care. A secondary aim is to compare the use of metaphors in Sweden and the UK in order to reveal differences and similarities. Textual data are collected froma) internet-based blogs, where patients write about their illness-related emotions and experiences while being in palliative care, and fromb) interviews with patients, family and health care professionals, where the focus is to investigate what it means to live a dignified life in palliative care. The two sets of data are analyzed using both qualitative and quantitative linguistic methods. First, the Pragglejaz procedure, a well-established linguistic method for metaphor identification, is used in order to manually identify metaphorical expressions in the material, develop analytic categories adapted to the Swedish language data and ensure inter-rater reliability. Second, the material is approached by means of corpus linguistic methods. The combination of research methods is inspired by the UK-based MELC project. The data are currently being processed and the first results will be presented at the conference. The project is funded by The Kamprad Family Foundation, Sweden.

  • Voices of Supporters : Populist parties, social media and the 2019 European elections
  • 2023
  • Bok (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This book addresses an under-researched area within populism studies: the discourse of supporters of populist parties. Taking the 2019 European elections as their case study, the authors analyse how supporters in eleven different countries construct identities and voting motivations on social media. The individual chapters comprise a range of methods to investigate data from different social media platforms, defining populism as a political strategy and/or practice, realised in discourse, that is based on a dichotomy between “the people”, who are unified by their will, and an out-group whose actions are not in the interest of the people, with a leader safeguarding the interests of the people against the out-group. The book identifies what motivates people to vote for populist parties, what role national identities and values play in those motivations, and how the social media postings of populist parties are recontextualised in supporters’ comments to serve as a voting motivation.
