  • Magnetic anisotropy of epitaxial Co2Fe-Ge Heusler alloy films on MgO (100) substrates
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: AIP Advances. - : American Institute of Physics Inc.. - 2158-3226. ; 7:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Films of Co2Fe-Ge Heusler alloy with variable Ge concentration deposited on monocrystalline MgO (100) substrates by magnetron co-sputtering are investigated using microstructural, morphological, magnetometric, and magnetic resonance methods. The films were found to grow epitaxially, with island-like or continuous-layer morphology depending the Ge-content. The ferromagnetic resonance data versus out-of-plane and in-plane angle indicate the presence of easy plane and 4-fold in-plane anisotropy. The magnetometry data indicate additional weak 2-fold in-plane anisotropy and pronounced at low fields rotatable anisotropy. The observed magnetic anisotropy properties discussed in correlation with the microstructure and morphology of the films.

  • Ferromagnetic resonance evidence of spinodal decomposition of Ni-x Cu1-x (0.5 < x < 1) alloy films
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Thin Solid Films. - : Elsevier. - 0040-6090 .- 1879-2731. ; 603, s. 424-427
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Films of diluted ferromagnetic (FM) Ni-x Cu1 - x alloys with 0.5 < x < 1 of about 80 nm in thickness were deposited at room temperature on glass-ceramic substrates using electron-beam co-deposition from Cu and Ni sources. The temperature dependence of the ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) spectra was investigated in the 140 < T < 500 K temperature range. The FMR spectra for films of composition 0.75 <= x <= 0.89 show two absorption peaks, which can be ascribed to a formation of two different FM phases as a result of phase separation in the alloy. The observed unusual temperature dependence of the resonance magnetic fields is interpreted as potentially magnetostrictive in nature. The results are discussed and compared to those for similar Ni-Cu films obtained using magnetron sputtering.

  • Magnetic properties and anisotropic coercivity in nanogranular films of Co/Al2O3 above the percolation limit
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics D. - : IOP Publishing. - 0022-3727 .- 1361-6463. ; 47:34, s. 345002-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Magnetic properties of nanogranular ferromagnetic Co/Al2O3 films with 74.5 at% Co, which is above the percolation limit, are investigated. It is established that the films have perpendicular magnetic anisotropy and a weaker in-plane anisotropy. The magnetization curves show that the film consists of two magnetic components: a dominating contribution from magneto-anisotropic isolated grains with the anisotropy axis perpendicular to the film plane and a weaker contribution from the percolated part of the film. This two-component magnetic composition of the films, with the dominating contribution from the nanograins, is confirmed by transmission electron microscopy as well as by ferromagnetic resonance spectroscopy. It is further established that the coercive field of the film is almost entirely determined by the percolated part of the film. In this, the angular dependence of the coercive force, H-c(theta(H)), is essentially proportional to sin(-1)theta(H), where theta(H) is the angle between the applied field and the film's normal. However, for theta(H) -> 0, H-c(theta(H)) there is a narrow minimum with H-c approaching zero. Such non-linear dependence agrees well with our modelling results for a two-component magnetic system of the film, where the non-percolated nanograins have a distinct perpendicular anisotropy. The reported results should be important for in-depth characterization and understanding the magnetism and anisotropy in inhomogeneous systems as well as for applications, specifically in perpendicular magnetic recording.

  • Stimulated emission and absorption of photons in magnetic point contacts
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: New Journal of Physics. - : IOP Publishing. - 1367-2630. ; 14
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Point contacts between high anisotropy ferromagnetic SmCo5 and normal metal Cu are used to achieve a strong spin-population inversion in the contact core. Subjected to microwave irradiation in resonance with the Zeeman splitting in Cu, the inverted spin population relaxes through stimulated spin-flip photon emission, detected as peaks in the point-contact resistance. Resonant spin-flip photon absorption is detected as resistance minima, corresponding to sourcing the photon field energy into the electrical circuit. These results demonstrate fundamental mechanisms that are potentially useful in designing metallic spin-based lasers.

  • Rotatable magnetic anisotropy in Si/SiO2/(Co2Fe)(x)Ge1-x Heusler alloy films
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics. - : IOP Publishing. - 0953-8984 .- 1361-648X. ; 25:41, s. 416003-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Polycrystalline (Co2Fe)(x)Ge1-x Heusler alloy films are fabricated by sputtering on amorphous substrates and shown to possess three types of magnetic anisotropy. The nearly stoichiometric composition of x = 50 m.f.% shows a rectangular hysteresis loop and isotropic coercive and ferromagnetic resonance fields when the film is field-magnetized along any in-plane direction, thus predominantly possessing rotatable in-plane magnetic anisotropy. Higher-x compositions show evidence of two-and fourfold in-plane anisotropy superposed on the rotatable one. A qualitative model of the observed anisotropic magnetic properties is proposed. The model explains the rotatable anisotropy by taking into account dry friction for the in-plane rotation of the magnetization direction in a fine-grained polycrystalline film with the magnetic grain size smaller than the correlation length of the inter-grain exchange interaction. The observed two-and fourfold magnetic anisotropy contributions are attributed to partial texturing of the fine-grained films, even though the films are grown on amorphous SiO2 substrates. These results should be valuable for understanding and controlling the magnetic behaviour of highly spin-polarized Heusler alloy films used in various magnetic nanodevices.

  • Ferromagnetic resonance in copper-permalloy point contacts
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Fizika Nizkih Temperatur. - 0132-6414 .- 1816-0328. ; 40:10, s. 1187-1197
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The systematic investigations of the response signal of Copper-Permalloy (Ni80Fe20) point contacts to microwave irradiation (8-12 GHz) are performed. The influence of external magnetic field strength, transport current flowing through the contact, the intensity and frequency of the RF exposure on the measured signal is studied. The contributions to the contacts resistance from the effects of giant and anisotropic magnetoresistance are analyzed. It is established experimentally that the position of resonance features is in good agreement with the Kittel formula calculation for FMR in the film at a parallel H field. The resonance signal was observed on the background of an additional contribution due to the rectification of RF current on the nonlinear contact IV-curve. It is found that there are two mechanisms for the resonant response are revealed: a synchronous self-detection by means of mixing of RF current with temporal variations of resistance and a bolometric mechanism associated with a steady-state change of contact resistance under excitation of magnetization precession (a bolometric response). It is found that the resonance signal amplitude is linearly proportional to transport current through the contact and microwave irradiation intensity.

  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Low temperature physics (Woodbury, N.Y., Print). - : AIP Publishing. - 1063-777X .- 1090-6517. ; 40:10, s. 929-936
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The response of copper-permalloy (Ni80Fe20) point microcontacts to microwave irradiation (8-12 GHz) is investigated systematically. The effects of the external magnetic field strength, transport current flowing through the contact, and microwave intensity and frequency on the measured signal are studied. The contributions to the contact electrical resistance owing to giant and anisotropic magnetoresistance are analyzed. The experimentally determined positions of the resonance features are in good agreement with Kittel's formula for FMR in films in parallel magnetic fields. The resonance signal is observed against the background of an additional contribution owing to rectification of the rf field on the nonlinear current-voltage characteristic of the contact. Two mechanisms for the resonance response are discovered: synchronous self-detection from mixing of the rf current with temporal variations in the resistance and a bolometric response associated with the steady-state variation in the contact resistance when magnetization precession is excited. The amplitude of the resonance signal is linearly proportional to the transport current through the contact and to the intensity of the microwave irradiation.

  • Nonstationary magnetization dynamics of point contacts with a single ferromagnetic film
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Low temperature physics (Woodbury, N.Y., Print). - : AIP Publishing. - 1063-777X .- 1090-6517. ; 35:8-9, s. 693-701
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The electric conductivity of point nanocontacts between 5, 10, and 100 nm thick ferromagnetic (F) cobalt films and a nonmagnetic (N) metal (copper or silver) needle is investigated. Two fundamentally different mechanisms for the formation of the response, signal to microwave irradiation have been observed for the first time. One mechanism is due to the effect of the rectification of high frequency ac current on the nonlinearity of the current-voltage characteristics due to the precession of the magnetization under the action of a constant transport current flowing through the contact. The second one is associated with the resonance excitation of the precession of the magnetization vector at the fundamental frequency and its harmonic by an external high-frequency field. The experimental results support a previous contention that a "surface spin valve" whose static and dynamic properties are similar to conventional F-1-N-F-2 spin valve [Nano Letters 7, 927 (2007)] is formed in the experimental F-N nanocontacts.

  • Spin dynamics in point contacts to single ferromagnetic films
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. Condensed Matter and Materials Physics. - 1098-0121 .- 1550-235X. ; 79:9, s. 092419-1-092419-4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Excitation of magnons or spin waves driven by nominally unpolarized transport currents in point contacts of normal and ferromagnetic metals is probed by irradiating the contacts with microwaves. Two characteristic dynamic effects are observed: a suppression of spin-wave nonlinearities in the point contact conductance by off-resonance microwave irradiation and a resonant stimulation of spin-wave peaks in the differential resistance of the nanocontacts by the microwave field. These observations provide direct evidence that the magnetoresistance peaks observed are due to gigahertz spin dynamics at the ferromagnetic interface driven by the spin transfer torque effect of the transport current.

  • Spin-valve effects in point contacts to exchange biased Co40Fe40B20 films
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Low temperature physics (Woodbury, N.Y., Print). - : AIP Publishing. - 1063-777X .- 1090-6517. ; 40:10, s. 915-918
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Nonlinear current-voltage characteristics and magnetoresistance of point contacts between a normal metal (N) and films of amorphous ferromagnet (F) Co40Fe40B20 of different thickness, exchange-biased by antiferromagnetic Mn80Ir20 are studied. A surface spin valve effect in the conductance of such F-N contacts is observed. The effect of exchange bias is found to be inversely proportional to the Co40Fe40B20 film thickness. This behavior as well as other magneto-transport effects we observe on single exchange-pinned ferromagnetic films are similar in nature to those found in conventional three-layer spin-valves.
