  • Measurement of the gamma p -> K-0 Sigma(+) reaction with the Crystal Ball/TAPS detectors at the Mainz Microtron
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C (Nuclear Physics). - 0556-2813. ; 88:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The gamma p -> K-0 Sigma(+) reaction has been measured from threshold to E-gamma = 1.45 GeV (W-CM = 1.9 GeV) using the Crystal Ball and TAPS multiphoton spectrometers together with the photon tagging facility at the Mainz Microtron MAMI. In the present experiment, this reaction was searched for in the 3 pi(0)p final state, by assuming K-S(0) -> pi(0)pi(0) and Sigma(+) -> pi(0)p. The experimental results include total and differential cross sections as well as the polarization of the recoil hyperon. The new data significantly improve empirical knowledge about the gamma p -> K-0 Sigma(+) reaction in the measured energy range. The results are compared to previous measurements and model predictions. It is demonstrated that adding the present gamma p -> K-0 Sigma(+) results to existing data allowed a better description of this reaction with various models.

  • New determination of the eta transition form factor in the Dalitz decay eta -> e(+) e(-) gamma with the Crystal Ball/TAPS detectors at the Mainz Microtron
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C (Nuclear Physics). - 0556-2813. ; 89:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Dalitz decay eta -> e(+) e(-) gamma has been measured in the gamma p -> eta p reaction with the Crystal Ball and TAPS multiphoton spectrometers, together with the photon-tagging facility at the Mainz Microtron MAMI. The experimental statistic used in this work is one order of magnitude greater than in any previous measurement of eta -> e(+) e(-) gamma. The value obtained for the slope parameter Lambda(-2) of the eta transition form factor, Lambda(-2) = (1.95 +/- 0.15(stat) +/- 0.10(syst)) GeV-2, is in good agreement with recent measurements conducted in eta -> e(+) e(-) gamma and eta -> mu(+) mu(-) gamma decays, as well as with recent form-factor calculations. The uncertainty obtained in the value of Lambda(-2) is lower compared to results from previous measurements of the eta -> e(+) e(-) gamma decay.

  • Experimental study of the gamma p -> pi (0)pi(0) p reaction with the Crystal Ball/TAPS detector system at the Mainz Microtron
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C (Nuclear Physics). - 0556-2813. ; 85:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The gamma p -> pi(0)pi(0) p reaction has been measured from threshold to 1.4 GeV using the Crystal Ball and TAPS photon spectrometers together with the photon tagging facility at the Mainz Microtron. The experimental results include total and differential cross sections as well as specific angular distributions, which were used to extract partial-wave amplitudes. In particular, the energy region below the D-13(1520) resonance was studied.

  • Evidence for environmentally dependent cluster disruption in M83
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Monthly notices of the Royal Astronomical Society. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0035-8711 .- 1365-2966 .- 1745-3925. ; 417:1, s. l6-L10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Using multiwavelength imaging from the Wide Field Camera 3 on the Hubble Space Telescope we study the stellar cluster populations of two adjacent fields in the nearby face-on spiral galaxy, M83. The observations cover the galactic centre and reach out to similar to 6 kpc, thereby spanning a large range of environmental conditions, ideal for testing empirical laws of cluster disruption. The clusters are selected by visual inspection to be centrally concentrated, symmetric and resolved on the images. We find that a large fraction of objects detected by automated algorithms (e. g. SEXTRACTOR or DAOFIND) are not clusters, but rather are associations. These are likely to disperse into the field on time-scales of tens of Myr due to their lower stellar densities and not due to gas expulsion (i.e. they were never gravitationally bound). We split the sample into two discrete fields (inner and outer regions of the galaxy) and search for evidence of environmentally dependent cluster disruption. Colour-colour diagrams of the clusters, when compared to simple stellar population models, already indicate that a much larger fraction of the clusters in the outer field are older by tens of Myr than in the inner field. This impression is quantified by estimating each cluster's properties (age, mass and extinction) and comparing the age/mass distributions between the two fields. Our results are inconsistent with 'universal' age and mass distributions of clusters, and instead show that the ambient environment strongly affects the observed populations.

  • An Imaging and Spectroscopic Exploration of the Dusty Compact Obscured Nucleus Galaxy Zw 049.057
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Astrophysical Journal, Supplement Series. - 1538-4365 .- 0067-0049. ; 274:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Zw 049.057 is a moderate-mass, dusty, early-type galaxy that hosts a powerful compact obscured nucleus (CON, L FIR,CON ≥ 1011 L ⊙). The resolution of the Hubble Space Telescope enabled measurements of the stellar light distribution and characterization of dust features. Zw 049.057 is inclined with a prominent three-zone disk; the R ≈ 1 kpc star-forming inner dusty disk contains molecular gas, a main disk with less dust and an older stellar population, and a newly detected outer stellar region at R > 6 kpc with circular isophotes. Previously unknown polar dust lanes are signatures of a past minor merger that could have warped the outer disk to near face-on. Dust transmission measurements provide lower limit gas mass estimates for dust features. An extended region with moderate optical depth and M ≥ 2 × 108 M ⊙ obscures the central 2 kpc. Optical spectra show strong interstellar Na D absorption with a constant velocity across the main disk, likely arising in this extraplanar medium. Opacity measurements of the two linear dust features, pillars, give a total mass of ≥106 M ⊙, flow rates of ≥2 M ⊙ yr−1, and few Myr flow times. Dust pillars are associated with the CON and are visible signs of its role in driving large-scale feedback. Our assessments of feedback processes suggest gas recycling sustains the CON. However, radiation pressure driven mass loss and efficient star formation must be avoided for the active galactic nucleus to retain sufficient gas over its lifespan to produce substantial mass growth of the central black hole.
