  • Careers, citations, bibliometrics, and impact : perspectives of new and emerging researchers
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: How to get published in the best tourism journals. - Cheltenham : Edward Elgar Publishing. - 9781035300600 - 9781035300594 ; , s. 211-238
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This chapter brings together invited contributions from new and emerging academics with respect to their experiences and how publishing demands affect their careers and life, and vice versa. The provision of such experiences is important as it conveys the reality of publishing from a real-world context with respect to the pressures we face, especially when starting on the academic ladder. Authors were given a broad scope with respect to their contributions and the results are provided with only very minor editing. They have also been presented anonymously, or rather collectively, because although there are clearly different perspectives, emphasises, and interpretations, there are also commonalities in the contributors’ experiences. Nevertheless, as the reader will see, there are a number of common themes that emerge. Following the perspectives of the different contributions the chapter will discuss some of the main issues that emerge and their implications, including some of the darker aspects of the pressures of publishing.

  • Spatio-temporal variability of the earth's surface temperature and the changes in land user/land cover : implications for sustainable tourism development
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Policy Research in Tourism, Leisure and Events. - : Taylor & Francis Group. - 1940-7963 .- 1940-7971.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Tourism both contributes to environmental change and is, in turn, affected by such change. One area that is of considerable significance is tourism's contribution to land use change and its subsequent impacts. Land use change, such as tourism urbanization, together with global heating leads to an increase in surface temperature and deterioration in environmental quality and human comfort levels. Understanding the implications of tourism-related land use change is therefore of considerable importance for climate adaptation. Using Landsat satellite images, the evolution of land users/covers and the temperature of the land surface between 1985 and 2020 were studied in Cyprus. The analysis of the data confirms that tourism development activities have influenced the increase in urban hotspots. This destination has experienced a 6.2 & DEG;C increase in average temperature and 168.8% in the urban hotspot. Based on the findings the study highlights the implications for sustainable tourism development and potential means of mitigation.

  • Airbnb and the sharing economy: Introduction
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Current Issues in Tourism. - : Taylor & Francis Group. - 1368-3500 .- 1747-7603. ; 25:19, s. 3057-3067
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A large share of growth in the sharing or platform economy is driven by peer-to-peer (P2P) accommodation providers such as Airbnb. The literature argues for both positive and negative socio-cultural, economic and environmental impacts emanating from the tourism and hospitality businesses and value chains that are dependent on AirBnB and other online platforms. These impacts are felt in terms of competition with more traditional business models (e.g. hotels, motels and B&Bs) and their influence on tourist and visitor flows as well as their spatial impacts that has led to substantial community opposition to accommodation providers that utilise Airbnb in some destinations. This introduction to the special issue on AirBnB and the sharing economy identifies several themes in the consumption and production of the sharing, peer-to-peer and platform economies on tourism at various scales, ranging from international networks, destinations and business, through to neighbourhoods and individuals. Although Airbnb provides the primary frame by which to investigate the relationships between the sharing economy and tourism and the implications of so-called disruptive innovation this introduction also notes some of the wider implications of the sharing and platform economy for people and places.

  • Politics and the sustainable development goals : Tourism agenda 2030 perspective article
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Tourism Review. - : Emerald Group Publishing Limited. - 1660-5373 .- 1759-8451. ; 78:2, s. 314-320
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • PurposeThe 2030 Agenda provides the normative framework for much contemporary thinking on sustainable tourism. This viewpoint paper aims to discuss the inherently political nature of the sustainable development goals (SDGs) and the implications for tourism and sustainability.Design/methodology/approachThis is a paper that highlights the political dimensions of positioning tourism within the SDGs.FindingsThis paper highlights continuing challenges in the broader politics of sustainable development in terms of the development of the 2030 Agenda and its implementation. It finds that the SDGs function as a form of metagovernance for sustainable development and sustainable tourism in particular.Originality/valueThis paper reinforces the importance of understanding the politics of the 2030 Agenda by locating sustainable tourism and the SDGs in the broader political context and the significance of metagovernance. In so doing, this paper contributes to continued theoretical debates on the framing of sustainable tourism that are key to understanding the politics of sustainable development and the winners and losers in the politics of tourism.

  • Time for Tea : Factors of Service Quality, Memorable Tourism Experience and Loyalty in Sustainable Tea Tourism Destination
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Sustainability. - : MDPI. - 2071-1050. ; 14:21
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Underpinned by Script Theory and the S-O-R model, this research enhances the green tourism consumption literature to identify how destination service quality contributes to visitors' memorable experiences and loyalty towards a place-based food tourism attraction. A total of 202 tourists who visited the Best of Highlands tea plantation in Malaysia were surveyed using an online questionnaire. Using PLS-SEM, this study has several notable findings: (i) destination service quality factors: activities, cleanliness, language, and security emerged as predictors of memorable tourism experiences; (ii) memorable tourism experiences strongly predicted destination loyalty; and (iii) memorable tourism experiences mediate the path between destination service quality and destination loyalty. This study therefore provides new insights into both sustainable tea tourism and script theory with respect to how memories guide future decision making. These results also provide insights for tea tourism providers in designing an unforgettable destination that stimulates the tourist's intention to revisit the destination and to communicate it to others.

  • Does a good story prompt visit intention? : Evidence from the augmented reality experience at a heritage site in China
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Heritage Tourism. - : Taylor & Francis Group. - 1743-873X .- 1747-6631. ; 18:4, s. 427-444
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The emergence of digital technology has led researchers, businesses, and entrepreneurs to reflect more on the potential value that Augmented Reality (AR) can play in tourism. Although the relationship between authenticity and travel intention has been examined previously, little is known about how authenticity influences tourist travel intention after an AR experience. To fill this research gap, the current study constructs a theoretical model from narrative transportation theory. The results show that narrative transportation is a mechanism that bridges object-based authenticity and existential authenticity with travel intention. This study provides valuable theoretical insights into the antecedents and consequences of narrative transport while enriching the understanding of AR. Meaningful practical insights are offered to destination authorities.

  • Exploring non-immersive virtual reality experiences in tourism : Empirical evidence from a world heritage site
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: The international journal of tourism research. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 1099-2340 .- 1522-1970. ; 25:3, s. 372-383
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • With the popularization of the concept of the metaverse, non-immersive virtual reality (VR) has become a focus of tourism destination marketing. Drawing upon telepresence theory, this study identifies the antecedents and consequences of telepresence to help interpret tourist behavior in the context of non-immersive VR experience. Results revealed that mental imagery and vividness positively predict tourist telepresence and satisfaction; Telepresence positively predicts satisfaction and intention during non-immersive VR experiences. Our work enriches telepresence theory by identifying the antecedents and consequences of telepresence in the context of non-immersive VR, and provides meaningful practical insights for similar attractions that adopt the technology.

  • How does ice-snow celebrity influence Chinese tourists to visit Nordic destinations? : The case of TikTok
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Hospitality and Tourism. - : Taylor & Francis Group. - 1502-2250 .- 1502-2269.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The emergence of short video (e.g. TikTok) provides a new avenue for destination marketing. However, limited research exists on short ice-snow destination videos, which are significant for Nordic winter tourism marketing. Drawing on a model based on parasocial interaction theory, this study finds that ice-snow celebrity attachment positively predicts Chinese tourists' parasocial interaction, enjoyment, and hence intention to visit Nordic destinations in winter. Considering that Chinese tourists are an important consumer group for Nordic tourism, the study contributes not only to parasocial interaction theory in the context of short videos and the presentation of ice-snow tourism experiences but also to how to improve ice-snow tourism marketing via celebrity strategies.

  • Understanding a virtual heritage site through the lens of telepresence and virtual destination image
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Heritage Tourism. - : Taylor & Francis Group. - 1743-873X .- 1747-6631.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The experience of heritage sites through digital technology is an increasingly important topic for researchers and practitioners. Drawing upon telepresence theory, this study explores how a visitor's destination image is formed and its impact on satisfaction in a virtual heritage site experience. The survey results show that telepresence, cognitive image, affective image, and satisfaction are positively correlated. Furthermore, the relationship between telepresence and satisfaction was mediated by the destination image in the virtual heritage site experience. This research extends telepresence theory by testing its impact on destination image in a virtual tourism experience as well as providing some meaningful practical insights for heritage site marketing managers on virtual heritage experiences.
