    • Employment integration is a cornerstone of migrant integration into host society. Though many AI initiatives targeting migrants have been initiated, research is limited on the design, outcomes and effectiveness of such initiatives. Today, there is a lack of effective implementation protocols and opportunities to assess whether these technologies constitute successful intervention tools and actually contribute to migrant integration.This four-year interdisciplinary research projectseeks to gain a deeper understanding of thechallengesandopportunitiesthatartificialintelligence(AI)entailsforfacilitatingmigrantemploymentintegrationandworkplaceinclusion. We address the following research ques-tions:1. How is AI used by migrants, their co-workers and the actors involved in their employment integration process? 2. How does AI enhance migrant professional competences?and 3. What are pathways to success of AI interventions for integration and inclusion purposes?Acombination of qualitative and quantitative research methods (interviews, focus groups, shadowing and interactive workshops) is used. Insix work packages (WPs)we analyze and identify the challenges and opportunities thatAI entailforfacilitatingmigrantemploymentintegration. Apart from contributing to theorizing migrant integration and AI, we also aim at providing a robust evidence-base for ‘good’ policy-making, regulatory guidelines and administration of profession-oriented integration process.Finally, we want to contribute to better understanding of how AI can contribute to overcoming prejudice and discrimination, which, in turn, can lead to mutual learning and building sustainable, wel-coming and secure communities.

  • Smartphones and Migrant Integration: Mobile Technology as a Bridging Tool between Migrants and Host Societies

    • The aim of this study was to explore migrants' experiences and perceptions of mobile resources specifically developed for integration purposes in Sweden. Thematic content analysis of semi-structured focus group interviews with newly arrived migrants, guided by the Indicators for Integration Framework, was used. The findings suggest that lack of knowledge about existing applications and skepticism towards mobile technology as integration support in combination with time pressure and limited digital skills impede migrants’ use of mobile applications for integration. Further, technical hurdles stemming from owning outdated smartphones and technical problems with applications prevent migrants from uploading the applications. Finally, fear of surveillance is another obstacle for using applications requiring social media logins for authentication. The study reveals the friction between developers and providers of mobile resources for integration and the users’ perspective on these resources, offering implications for the development of mobile technology for migrant integration.

    • Sweden is a highly digitalized society, rapidly changing into a multicultural one. Though migrants use smartphones in their migration journeys and, upon reaching host societies, for integration, i.e. learning language, culture and developing contacts with locals, there are certain potential risks in relation to surveillance. This study explores the use of mobile resources for integration purposes by newly arrived migrants in Sweden, in particular from the perspective of surveillance. Further, it aims to analyze the available mobile resources for migrant integration and how these resources are designed, with special focus on the use of social logins. Mapping of mobile resources in combination with 15 focus-group interviews with newly arrived migrants is used. The results show that the migrants are concerned about surveillance and consciously avoid using the resources in which social logins are required, preferring email as a sign-in option. The mapping of the resources shows that the majority of the resources have multiple sign-in options, including Facebook, Google and email. None has a social login as a sole sign-in, and many resources require no sign-in. Thus, the existing resources pose no apparent risk from the social media surveillance perspective for the migrants to use them. However, as in further development of resources social logins might become needed to track user progress, migrants’ concerns about surveillance should be taken into consideration.

    • In this paper, we explore challenges in communication between metrics teams and stakeholders in metrics service delivery. Drawing on interviews and interactive workshops with team members and stakeholders at two different Swedish agile software development organizations, we identify interrelated challenges such as aligning expectations, prioritizing demands, providing regular feedback, and maintaining continuous dialogue, which influence team-stakeholder interaction, relationships and performance. Our study shows the importance of understanding communicative hurdles and provides suggestions for their mitigation, therefore meriting further empirical research.

    • As an increasing number of organizations create metrics teams, conducting stakeholder mapping is pivotal for identifying and analyzing metrics stakeholders’ expectations for reducing the risks of miscommunication and project failure. Further, though team-stakeholder communication is essential for successful collaboration, few studies focus on it in software measurement context. This case study seeks to identify and analyze metrics team’s stakeholders, with a special focus on communication challenges in team-stakeholder contacts. Inspired by Bryson's Basic Stakeholder Analysis Techniques and Mitchell, Agle, and Wood's theoretical model for stakeholder identification, a stakeholder mapping exercise was conducted using interactive workshops and follow-up interviews with 16 metrics team members and their stakeholders. The results illustrate the complexity of identifying stakeholders in agile organizations, the importance of developing a metrics culture, and enhancing transparency in team-stakeholder communication. The study aims to contribute to the development of stakeholder theory and offers insights into communication in software engineering context.

    • Prior literature has emphasized the challenges of appropriating digital innovation in terms of combining digital and physical components to produce novel goods and services. However, there is a lack of more detailed understanding of how actors draw on experience, careful judgment and learning to drive digital innovation processes towards a projected future vision. In this paper, we explore how actors at a large incumbent car-manufacturing firm engage with digital innovation as they grapple with complex user expectations through the lens of phronesis. On the basis of engaged scholarship and interviews with members of two research and development (R&D) teams, we pay attention to the particular capacities, here termed phronetic principles, that guide user centric development work. Based on this, we propose five principles of importance for understanding digital innovation process: 1) projecting visions, 2) value-based judgment, 3) attuning to particulars, 4) open-mindedness, and 5) perpetual learning.

  • Putting Phronesis to Work in Digital Innovation

    • This paper uses the Aristotelian concept of phronesis (practical wisdom) as a sensitizing device to explore digital materiality in relation to user experience. We studied a digital innovation called Prudence, and observed that it possesses material properties including sensitivity to particulars, interactive ability, open-mindedness, and future orientation, making it context-aware. These properties quintessentially enabled the solution to be 'phronetic', and attune to its user's flow of activities and routines, to deliver 'good' user experiences. The study provides an opportunity for extending and strengthening current and emergent theories on digital materiality by incorporating phronesis as a vital ingredient to understand experiential computing. It also highlights the importance of embracing value-rationality to attain the kind of user delight that goes beyond what can be pre-defined in a specification. Overall, the paper contributes to show the fruitfulness of appropriating the notion of phronesis into the field of digital innovation.

    • Several advances have been made towards health information systems (HIS) use and implementations. However, these advances have not been matched by equal advances in HIS interoperability implementations. Current challenges in this domain are partly due to lack of implementation knowledge hence resulting into a number of failed HIS interoperability implementations. To gain substantive implementation knowledge on HIS interoperability projects, we have carried out interviews through an interpretive case-study approach to investigate a successful HIS interoperability project. Through this approach we propose an initial set of HIS interoperability implementation best practices comprising of these key processes: discovering interoperability need, projecting outcome, managing change and adopting an appropriate interoperability strategy which together depict a contingence management relationship. We conclude that this initial set of best practices contributes substantive knowledge that can guide future HIS interoperability implementations.

    • In Uganda, patients receive care from different health facilities. However, most facilities struggle to exchange patient information across boundaries because their health information systems (HIS) operate in silos. Yet to meet the needs of a patient who receives care from different health facilities the participating facilities ought to collaborate, share and exchange patient information in order to enhance patient care coordination and continuity (PCCC) across the continuum of care. Using qualitative interviews we examine five HIS to investigate the problematic issues that could be raised during HIS active involvement in PCCC across the continuum of care. Results highly indicate that the existing HIS in the country do not enhance PCCC, and below are some of the challenges realized: interoperability objective not given priority during system design, HIS operating in silos, lack of a national standard for the patient record, health facilities exercising ownership of the data and other non-technical challenges. The main implication of these findings is that focusing on the interoperability objective as a design requirement during HIS implementation would potentially repress all other challenges and revive the active role of HIS involvement in PCCC.
