  • J-PARC Neutrino Beamline Upgrade Technical Design Report
  • 2019
  • Rapport (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this document, technical details of the upgrade plan of the J-PARC neutrino beamline for the extension of the T2K experiment are described. T2K has proposed to accumulate data corresponding to 2×1022 protons-on-target in the next decade, aiming at an initial observation of CP violation with 3σ or higher significance in the case of maximal CP violation. Methods to increase the neutrino beam intensity, which are necessary to achieve the proposed data increase, are described.

  • Radiation-hard semiconductor detectors for SuperLHC
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Instruments & Methods in Physics Research. Section A: Accelerators, Spectrometers, Detectors, and Associated Equipment. - : Elsevier BV. - 0167-5087 .- 0168-9002. ; 541:1-2, s. 189-201
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • An option of increasing the luminosity of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN to 1035 cm-2 s-1 has been envisaged to extend the physics reach of the machine. An efficient tracking down to a few centimetres from the interaction point will be required to exploit the physics potential of the upgraded LHC. As a consequence, the semiconductor detectors close to the interaction region will receive severe doses of fast hadron irradiation and the inner tracker detectors will need to survive fast hadron fluences of up to above 1016cm-2. The CERN-RD50 project "Development of Radiation Hard Semiconductor Devices for Very High Luminosity Colliders" has been established in 2002 to explore detector materials and technologies that will allow to operate devices up to, or beyond, this limit. The strategies followed by RD50 to enhance the radiation tolerance include the development of new or defect engineered detector materials (SiC, GaN, Czochralski and epitaxial silicon, oxygen enriched Float Zone silicon), the improvement of present detector designs and the understanding of the microscopic defects causing the degradation of the irradiated detectors. The latest advancements within the RD50 collaboration on radiation hard semiconductor detectors will be reviewed and discussed in this work.

  • Real exposure to pig pancreatic juice and bile inhibit exocrine pancreatic secretion in pigs
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Livestock Science. - : Elsevier BV. - 1871-1413. ; 108:1-3, s. 53-56
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The mechanisms involved in the down regulation of the exocrine pancreas are still not fully elucidated. The purpose of the present study was to examine the effect of duodenal and ileal exposure to pancreatic enzymes and bile on pancreatic secretion. Experiments were performed with pigs fitted with pancreatic duct, ileal and jugular vein catheters, and duodenal T-shaped cannula. A negative feedback regulation of pancreatic secretion was found for both duodenal and ileal delivery of pancreatic juice. Pancreatic secretion was unaffected by duodenal delivery of bile and bile salts, while ileal delivery of bile and bile salts lowered it. On the other hand, pancreatic secretion was increased by duodenal loading of commercial non- or activated pancreatic enzyme preparations, thus probably recognised as dietary protein. Plasma cholecystokinin (CCK) level was lowered only by duodenal delivery of pancreatic juice. In conclusion, the results prove the existence of negative feedback mechanism regulating pancreatic secretion dependent on the presence of pure pancreatic juice or bile at the ileal level. The mechanism at the duodenal level is exclusively sensitive to pure pancreatic juice. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V All rights reserved.

  • The effectiveness of enzymatic replacement therapy measured by turbidimetry and the lipaemic index in exocrine pancreatic insufficient young, growing pigs, fed a high-fat diet.
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Advances in Medical Sciences. - : Elsevier BV. - 1896-1126 .- 1898-4002. ; 54:1, s. 7-13
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: Conventionally, the management of exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI) involves the consumption of a specific diet as well as the replacement of pancreatic enzymes, the effectiveness of which is usually measured by a classical method of blood analyses of non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA) and triglycerides (TG). Dietary supplementation with a pancreatic enzyme preparation (PEP), in conjunction with a high-fat diet, on growth performance, digestibility and absorption (analysed using turbidimetry) of dietary fat in pigs with EPI was investigated.Materials/Methods: EPI was developed by surgical ligation of the pancreatic duct of six male pigs, 6 weeks of age. The pigs were fed a high fat diet (twice daily). A PEP containing 1800 mg entero-coated pancreatin was included in the high fat meals. Blood, urine and faecal samples were collected. The urine and faeces were analysed for dry matter, crude protein and fat content. The lipaemic index and plasma lipid profiles were assessed. Results: EPI completely stopped growth of the pigs. Treatment with PEP significantly increased (P<0.05) growth and body mass as well as the digestibility of dry matter and crude protein. PEP significantly improved the co-efficient of fat absorption, the lipaemic index (measured by turbidimetry methods) and caused significant changes in plasma nonesterified fatty acids and triglyceride concentrations. Conclusions: The short term enzymatic replacement therapy together with a high fat meal has immediate beneficial effects on diet digestibility and on the growth retardation observed in EPI pigs. The turbidimetry method used to measure lipaemic index is a reliable, quick and efficient technique in measuring plasma lipid profiles and thus a good tool for assessing fat absorption.

  • MnAs dots grown on GaN( 000(1)over-bar)-(1x1) surface
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B - Condensed Matter and Materials Physics. - 2469-9950 .- 2469-9969 .- 1098-0121. ; 75:23, s. 11-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • MnAs has been grown by means of MBE on the GaN(000 (1) over bar)-(1x1) surface. Two options of initiating the crystal growth were applied: (a) a regular MBE procedure (manganese and arsenic were delivered simultaneously) and (b) subsequent deposition of manganese and arsenic layers. It was shown that spontaneous formation of MnAs dots with the surface density of 1x10(11) cm(-2) and 2.5x10(11) cm(-2), respectively (as observed by atomic force microscopy), occurred for the layer thickness higher than 5 ML. Electronic structure of the MnAs/GaN systems was studied by resonant photoemission spectroscopy. That led to determination of the Mn 3d-related contribution to the total density of states distribution of MnAs. It has been proven that the electronic structures of the MnAs dots grown by the two procedures differ markedly. One corresponds to metallic, ferromagnetic NiAs-type MnAs, the other is similar to that reported for half-metallic zinc-blende MnAs. Both systems behave superparamagnetically (as revealed by magnetization measurements), but with both the blocking temperatures and the intradot Curie temperatures substantially different. The intradot Curie temperature is about 260 K for the former system while markedly higher than room temperature for the latter one. Relations between growth process, electronic structure, and other properties of the studied systems are discussed. Possible mechanisms of half-metallic MnAs formation on GaN are considered.

  • Structural and optical properties of low-temperature ZnO films grown by atomic layer deposition with diethylzinc and water precursors
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Journal of Crystal Growth. - : Elsevier BV. - 0022-0248. ; 311:4, s. 1096-1101
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report on properties of low-temperature (LT) ZnO films grown by the atomic layer deposition method with diethylzinc (DEZn) precursor. It is shown that the ZnO thin film crystallographic orientation, quality of the surface, and optical properties depend on the main growth parameters like temperature, pulsing, and purging time and thus can be varied in controllable manner. All the presented results were obtained for ZnO layers grown at temperature between 90 and 200 degrees C. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

  • Influence of alpha-ketoglutarate on bone mineral density of the femur in piglets
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Bulletin of the Veterinary Institute in Puławy. - 0042-4870. ; 49:3, s. 343-348
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this study was to determine the influence of daily oral administration of alpha-ketoglutarate (AKG) on bone mineral density of the femur and concentration of 17-beta-oestradiol in blood plasma during 70 d of postnatal life in piglets. All the animals were kept under standard rearing conditions. AKG was administered orally from the 1(st) d of life, while the control piglets were treated in the same way and time with physiological saline. The experimental and control groups were assigned to 6 age subgroups: 3, 14, 21, 35, 56 and 70 d of life. The animals from both groups were euthanised, then bone samples were collected and frozen at -25 degrees C until further analyses. Using dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA method) bone mineral density of the femora was estimated. Additionally, 17-beta-oestradiol concentration in blood plasma was assayed using RIA-test. The obtained results indicate positive influence of enteral AKG administration on bone mineral density of the femur in piglets. Moreover, AKG increased the level of 17-beta-oestradiol in blood plasma in post-weaned piglets.
