  • Electrocardiographic Findings in Systemic Lupus Erythematosus: Data From an International Inception Cohort
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Arthritis Care and Research. - : Wiley. - 2151-4658 .- 2151-464X. ; 67:1, s. 128-135
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective. To estimate the early prevalence of various electrocardiographic (EKG) abnormalities in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and to evaluate possible associations between repolarization changes (increased corrected QT [QTc] and QT dispersion [QTd]) and clinical and laboratory variables, including the anti-Ro/SSA level and specificity (52 or 60 kd). Methods. We studied adult SLE patients from 19 centers participating in the Systemic Lupus International Collaborating Clinics (SLICC) Inception Registry. Demographics, disease activity (Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Disease Activity Index 2000 [SLEDAI-2K]), disease damage (SLICC/American College of Rheumatology Damage Index [SDI]), and laboratory data from the baseline or first followup visit were assessed. Multivariate logistic and linear regression models were used to asses for any cross-sectional associations between anti-Ro/SSA and EKG repolarization abnormalities. Results. For the 779 patients included, mean +/- SD age was 35.2 +/- 13.8 years, 88.4% were women, and mean +/- SD disease duration was 10.5 +/- 14.5 months. Mean +/- SD SLEDAI-2K score was 5.4 +/- 5.6 and mean +/- SD SDI score was 0.5 +/- 1.0. EKG abnormalities were frequent and included nonspecific ST-T changes (30.9%), possible left ventricular hypertrophy (5.4%), and supraventricular arrhythmias (1.3%). A QTc >= 440 msec was found in 15.3%, while a QTc >= 460 msec was found in 5.3%. Mean +/- SD QTd was 34.2 +/- 14.7 msec and QTd >= 40 msec was frequent (38.1%). Neither the specificity nor the level of anti-Ro/SSA was associated with QTc duration or QTd, although confidence intervals were wide. Total SDI was significantly associated with a QTc interval exceeding 440 msec (odds ratio 1.38 [95% confidence interval 1.06, 1.79]). Conclusion. A substantial proportion of patients with recent-onset SLE exhibited repolarization abnormalities, although severe abnormalities were rare.

  • Teaching Methods for Drawing and Visual Narratives
  • 2021
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Due to Covid19, all teaching on our comics courses has been moved online, including workshops and exercises on drawing, image composition, and development of visual narratives. As the focus is on sketching and sequence composition processes, as critique and reflection is closely connected to work-in-progress, the move to distance teaching has removed the partners in these processes and conversations from one another. With tight budgets, no dedicated software-licences are bought, but the idea is to use what we have and add as little necessary freeware as needed / possible. While lecturing on and introducing to theoretical backgrounds, techniques, and examples on distance has continued to work quite well, the need to optimise student learning on online design assignments and workshops has been a challenge. It was understood before we had to move all teaching online that developing drawing skills as well as advancing the understanding of pictorial sequential narratives depends on continuous feedback between teachers and students as well as peer-learning between the students. But in practice, this has been the biggest challenge. We have been forced to develop alternative strategies and methods for teaching visual composition processes, showcasing as well as exercising comics-production processes. Didactic strategies have been developed to overcome the restrictions caused by online low-resolution visuals, the inability to unobtrusively observe and participate in design processes, to involve all students actively in critique-sessions, etc. In due consequence, we are putting together a kind of tool-box for teaching and workshopping on visual gestaltung online. We would like to present the results and invite the participants of this workshop to play through and discuss them to help us understand what is needed to make them work for other teachers on other courses that teach visualising / drawing / visual narratives.

  • Predicting microbial growth in pulp using an electronic tongue
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Nordic Pulp & Paper Research Journal. - 0283-2631 .- 2000-0669. ; 18:2, s. 134-140
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper describes how an electronic tongue based on pulsed voltammetry over noble metal electrodes can be used as an instrument to predict the amount of microorganisms in pulp during their growth cycle. The electronic tongue consists of a sensor body and a PC, which is used to control a potentiostat which applies the voltammetric large amplitude pulsed voltammetry (LAPV)-waveform across the sensor electrodes, and to collect the data of the resulting current. The sensor body is constructed of four noble metal electrodes, a stainless steel electrode as counterelectrode, and an Ag/AgCl reference electrode. This arrangement works as a standard three-electrode voltammetry system. Principal component analysis (PCA) and partial least squares (PLS) multivariate prediction methods are used to extract information from the data and to aid interpretation. It is shown that PLS-models of the voltammetric signals from this sensor array predicts the reference methods, viable count using Petrifilm(TM) aerobic total counts, with good accuracy (root mean square error of prediction (RMSEP) 9% of maximum value or 20% in a lower region corresponding to 500-1000 colony forming units) and adenosine triphosphate (ATP)-measurements with lower accuracy (10% of maximum value or 55% in a lower region). Since the precision of this method of detection is on a level with the viable count method, this method can be considered superior where short response times or the possibility of on-line measurement are of value.

    • Contemporary Swedish comics feature three strong genres: Autobiography, politics and feminism. Some of these comics, often drawn in expressive “crude” styles and echoing the famous slogan of the 60s that “ the personal is political”, have become nothing less than national bestsellers. To understand this shift in the Swedish comics market, from mainstream towards the “avant-garde”, one must take a look at the emergence of autobiographical comics in the mid 90s. These comics were often accused of being drawn in “crude” styles, by artists consciously lowering their standards. But the trend was (at it’s peak) so dominant that even established artists and publishers followed it and thus reached new audiences. Being one of the forerunners of this trend in Sweden, I have reflected upon the acceptance of these “scrawled” narratives and also on the development of my own style, as a result of my efforts to recreate memories of voyages in the past. The questions I raised before creating these comics were: What do memories look like? And:How do I recreate them in a believable way? What I found out by venturing into the past  was that this “stenographic” style actually conveyed realism in a more believable way, than realistically drawn images, and made me realise that my work actually corresponded with Töppfers theories on “systematic scrawling”.

  • Fanzines and Swedish Comics Memory
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Comics Memory. - Cham : Palgrave Macmillan. - 9783319917467 ; , s. 267-276
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Up until the mid 60s only a handful of Swedish intellectuals regarded comics as something worth serious attention and scholarly study. This however changed as a result of pop-art’s success, when works of Roy Lichtenstein (among others) were shown in Stockholm early in 1964, followed by an exhibition called “Seriernas Fantastiska Värld” in a small avant-garde gallery, in January 1965. This exhibition marks the starting-point for organizational efforts vis – a – vis comics in Sweden and is considered instrumental in the creation of Swedish fandom. This however is not enough to, at that time, declare the existence of an autonomous cultural field in Bourdieu’s sense. Since most of these activities (exhibitions, books, awards, articles, radio- and tv-shows) were organized and headed by one man alone, the journalist Sture Hegerfors, it is not until others start to debate in amateurishly edited and crudely copied fanzines, that polarities emerge, in a discourses central to the field: the definition of comics.
