  • Fibre Handleability, Damage Formation, Dust Emission and Morphology
  • 1994
  • Ingår i: Composites Testing and Standardization. - 1855731878 ; , s. 625-632
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The mechanical stress build up in fibre handling, the dynamical frictional phenomena between fibres and curved surfaces and formation of dust have been studied. Typical are stick slip behavior and threshold stress levels for formation of dust. The emission of dust can be limited by electrostatic charging. The measured coefficients of friction of the fibres depend on the mechanical properties, micro structure, morphology and sizing of the fibres, the friction materials, the deformation rates and applied loads.

  • Online monitoring of inorganic cooking chemicals in white liquor by pulse voltammetry
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: TAPPI JOURNAL. - : Tappi Press. - 0734-1415. ; 9:8, s. 49-53
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • White liquor parameters in the recovery area of a kraft pulp mill were monitored for a 1-year period using rhodium as an electrode material in a sensor system based on pulse voltammetry. Shift personnel performed offline titration analysis of the liquor every 4 hours. The results for effective alkali, sulfidity, and total titratable alkali were used to train and validate the sensor for online monitoring. Partial least square regression models developed from 150 reference titration results for each parameter from the first month of the study predicted concentrations for the following 11 months. Validation of the models using titration results indicated that overall relative root mean squared errors for prediction of the parameters were 3.7% for effective alkali, 3.4% for sulfidity, and 5.1% for total titratable alkali. Process stops that exposed the sensor to temperature excursions or acid washings resulted in temporary periods of poor prediction.

  • Analysis of Particle Emission During Simulated Processing of Multifilament Fibres
  • 1994
  • Ingår i: Composites Testing and Standardisation: ECCM-CTS 2. - 1855731878 ; , s. 633-640
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The use of multifilament fibres in composites is increasing. For usability, health effects and comfort it is important to include human aspects already in the development of materials and handling techniques. This paper presents a pilot experiment for designing further experiments on emission of particles and fibres from multifilament fibres during friction, bending and tensile forces.

  • "Man är ju inte mer än människa" : Långtidssjukskrivning ur ett emotionellt, relationellt och strukturellt perspektiv
  • 2009
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The background to this thesis is the dramatic increase of the long-term sickness absence that took place in Sweden from the late 1990s. There was also a shift in the diagnostic pattern with rising mental diagnoses. The overall purpose was to describe and try to understand the process leading to long-term sickness absence from the perspective of the sickness absentees, in order to get a better knowledge base for preventive and rehabilitative actions. The thesis comprises four studies (I-IV). Research methods have been both qualitative and quantitative. In study I data from individual interviews with 32 persons on long-term sick leave due to burnout was analyzed using a grounded theory approach. In study II the study population comprised of 2064 employed sick-listed persons, a sub sample derived from the 2002 national Swedish survey on health, working conditions, life situation and sick-listing. It was analyzed if persons with burnout had higher probability of having experienced the steps in the burnout staircase compared to other diagnostic groups in accordance with the previously suggested hypothesis of "the burnout staircase". Study III comprised of 2521 employed persons, a sub sample derived from the same national survey as in study II. It was analyzed if psychosocial work environment and conflicts and losses in private life independently or in combination were more strongly associated to sickness absence with mental diagnoses as compared to a healthy population. In study IV individual interviews with 25 professional rehabilitation actors and 14 unemployed sick-listed persons were conducted. Data were analyzed according to grounded theory method. The process that led to sicknes absence can be described as an emotional deprivation process, illustrated as a flight of stairs (the burnout staircase) describing a sequence of steps toward sickness absence (I). In accordance with the tested hypothesis persons with burnout to a noticeable higher extent reported expereince of being in the different steps in the burnout staircase compared to sickness absentees with other diagnoses. The model seemed to be valid also for persons with other mental diagnoses (II). Reorganization and conflicts at work as well as adding adverse private life events were associated with increased risk for sickness absence with mental diagnosis (III). Three significant factors behind the weak co-operation between local social insurance and employment agencies were identified: indistinct regulation of co-operation, shifting political goals over time and conflicting goals between agencies (IV). In this thesis it has been suggested that the course of events preceding sickness absence might be understood as a process of emotional deprivation, where the individual is gradually emptied of the life-giving emotional energy revealed in joy, commitment, and empathy. This life-giving force finds its nourishment in safe and secure social relations with others and in a social structure that promotes this type of social relations. The profound changes in the Swedish labour market during the 1990s influenced not just the psychosocial work climate but also the rehabilitation efforts for unemployed sick-listed persons. When the political goal of reducing the unemployment level came to the forefront the indistinct regulation and the conflicting goals in addition were factors that impaired co-ordinated rehabilitation. In this process also the physicians were involved. A labour market problem was turned into a medical problem.

  • När livsvärldens mönster brister : erfarenheter av att leva med demenssjukdom
  • 2009
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis is focusing on the lived experience of dementia. Both living with a partner as well as living alone. There is no unequivocal picture of how it is to live with dementia and few studies have been carried out in homes of afflicted persons. A deeper understanding of how it is to live with dementia can be a good starting-point for caring and the organisation of care.    The aim of this thesis is to describe, clarify and explain the lived experience of dementia from a lifeworld theoretical point of view. Another aim is to illuminate how decision makers look upon persons with dementia, their life and their care. Interviews and observations have been used to collect data. Participating informants have been couples with one partner suffering from dementia, persons with dementia living alone, politicians, administrators and social workers. Data was analysed with a phenomenological and a hermeneutical approach.   To live as a couple where one part has dementia (study 1) implies to live in a heteronomous existence where both the person with dementia and the partner become strangers in a world that should be the most well-known and familiar. The couple’s existence is narrowed and controlled by the impact of the dementia disease and the existence  is characterised of hopelessness and homelessness.   To live alone with dementia (study 2) means to live with a broken identity when the person with dementia gradually loses the memory of himself and his life. It becomes a life where the world of the individual is reduced to a quiet background that does not demand attention. The person with dementia does not longer know how he or she should relate to the world. The existence is characterised by a strong sense of loneliness and only a vague knowledge of the situation. The person with dementia longs for other people and gets a sense of boredom in the existence.   The comprehensive interpretation (study 3) shows that life with dementia is characterised by a gradual loss of meaning in life due to a disturbed intentionality. With disturbed intentionality the person with dementia gets increasingly more difficulties in understanding the meaning of the use of everyday objects. The person with dementia fights this and tries to create meaningfulness in the existence – something which gets very difficult and strenuous in time, since even the easiest everyday chores have to be thought through to make sense and even to be accomplished. The effort can in time become overpowering for the person with dementia who then stops doing the chores and becomes passive.   Politicians, administrators and social workers (study 4) are well aware that dementia gives suffering to the afflicted and the partner. The care is not designed to meet their needs for home care, and the decision makers don’t know how to change this. The person with dementia becomes like an object when the social workers don’t includes them in a dialogue about their needs and care. The partner is left alone in solving difficult problems and in making difficult decisions.   The theory of intentionality can help the professionals in the care of persons with dementia. By helping the cared-for-person to ‘stretch the intentional threads’ the caregivers can give the person a possibility to be rooted in the world. A care that supports intentionality and identity and reaches all the way in to the homes of the person with dementia would improve their situation and increase their well-being. This is possible when engaging the person in every-day chores that promote meaning. This kind of care contributes to the possibility for the person with dementia to be rooted in language, time and space.
