  • To Buy a War but Sell the Peace? : Mercenaries and Post-Civil War Stability
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Security Studies. - : Taylor & Francis Group. - 0963-6412 .- 1556-1852. ; 31:3, s. 417-445
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Private military and security companies (PMSCs) and mercenaries are a common feature in civil wars, yet little systematic analysis of PMSC involvement and conflict dynamics exists. This article explores whether civil conflicts that feature PMSC forces in combat are more likely to recur. We contend that the presence of PMSCs in fighting exacerbates the postwar credible commitment problem, as belligerents will be concerned about the possibility to redeploy such forces in the future. Belligerents pay more attention to more recent and more visible information, meaning that the effects should be greatest if PMSCs feature extensively in combat and at the end of the conflict. A duration analysis of data from the Private Security Events Database and Uppsala Conflict Data Program, 1990–2014, offers robust support for these claims. Our results suggest that conflict management should consider aspects beyond the local context as risk factors for civil war recurrence.

  • Where do they go : Factors that Influence in Which Conflicts Third Parties Engage
  • 2008
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    •   The literature about where third-parties go is an emerging research area. Various conflict-specific and country-specific factors have been suggested as explaining why different mediators go to particular cases. We argue that also humanitarian concern could be a reason for third party action. This paper tests various proposed factors on a new datasets on third party action. The results of our analysis find support that humanitarian concerns are important indicators for determining which conflicts the third parties choose to engage in. There seems, in particular, that deliberate attacks on civilians increases the likelihood of third party involvement.

  • Communication Technology and Reports on Political Violence : Cross-National Evidence Using African Events Data
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Political research quarterly. - : SAGE Publications. - 1065-9129 .- 1938-274X. ; 70:1, s. 19-31
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The spread of Internet and mobile phone access around the world has implications for both the processe s of contentious politics and subsequent reporting of protest, terrorism, and war. In this paper, we explore whether political violent events that occur close to modern communication networks are systematically better reported than others. Our analysis app roximates information availability by the level of detail provided about the date of each political violent event in Africa from 2008 to 2010 and finds that although access to communication technology improves reporting, the size of the effect is very smal l. Additional investigation finds that the effect can be attributed to the ability of journalists to access more diverse primary sources in remote areas due to increased local access to modern communication technology.

  • Debating the East Asian Peace : What it is. How it came about. Will it last?
  • 2017
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (refereegranskat)abstract
    • East Asia used to be the world’s deadliest battleground but since the 1980s there has been a sudden and marked reduction in battle deaths. This phenomenon, which has become known as the East Asian Peace, has spurred much debate. This volume reflects on some of the most prominent of these debates. Here, it focuses more on presenting and evaluating a variety of themes in relation to each other rather than offering simplistic answers to a complex question. While the chapters of this volume obviously discuss processes and events in East Asia, its contributions also offer insights to the core general questions for understanding peace and conflict. What is peace and how can it be studied? How can we characterize the East Asian Peace? What limits and conditions are associated with this peace? Can insights from East Asia explain overall regional trends of political violence? Does the way in which peace come about impact on the quality of peace? Is the East Asian peace under threat? If so, then why is this and where is the threat coming from?

  • Conflict prevention in post-conflict settings
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Research Handbook on Conflict Prevention. - Cheltenham : Edward Elgar Publishing. - 978 1 80392 083 2
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The risk of war is greater in post-conflict settings than in stable and peaceful societies, meaning that this is where prevention of conflict is more challenging and more important. This chapter introduces a theoretical distinction between (i) the issues/outcomes and (ii) the behavior by warring sides during/after previous conflict and the risk of new violence. This approach account for multiple relevant dimensions of the post-conflict context including the military balance of power, economic recovery, demobilization, governance, and reconciliation in combination rather than studying them as separate processes. Following an overview of quantitative and qualitative empirical research on post-conflict risks after international and intrastate wars, the settings with issue and actor fragmentation and absence of transparency are at greatest risk of renewed violence. Prevention should focus on the actions of violent entrepreneurs rather than unsolved issues of the previous conflict.
