  • Polarization-dependent nickel 2p x-ray-absorption spectra of La2NiO4+δ
  • 1998
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B Condensed Matter. - College Park, MD : American Physical Society. - 0163-1829 .- 1095-3795. ; 57:3, s. 1552-1557
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present polarization dependent x-ray-absorption spectra at nickel L edges of well-characterized La2NiO4+δ single crystals. In the stoichiometric compound the splitting between the x2−y2 and the 3z2−r2 orbitals is 0.7 eV, according to a fit of the 2p53d9 multiplet to the spectra. This value is in agreement with an assignment of dd excitations of the optical spectrum. The Ni L edges of the doped compound are consistent with the isotropic prepeak observed at the oxygen 1s edge. Theory does not predict holes on the apex oxygens, but we argue that doping causes a polaronic deformation which reduces the tetragonal distortion of the NiO6 octahedra, and delocalizes the hole over all six ligands.

  • Resonant X-Ray raman spectra of Cu dd excitations in Sr2CuO2Cl2
  • 1998
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - College Park, MD : American Physical Society. - 0031-9007 .- 1079-7114. ; 80:23, s. 5204-5207
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present resonant x-ray Raman scattering results on Sr2CuO2Cl2, a model compound for high- Tc superconductors. We demonstrate that the dd excitations can be observed and show that the polarization dependence can be used to identify the dd excitations. We find the transition from the dx2−y2 ground state to the dxy excited state at 1.35 eV and to the degenerate dxz and dyz excited states at 1.7 eV. From analysis of the polarization dependence we conclude that the d3z2−r2 orbital energy is at 1.5 eV and not in the midinfrared (0.5 eV) as recently suggested. We use recent theoretical arguments to show that the d3z2−r2 excitation is accompanied by a local spin flip resulting in a shift upwards of 0.2 eV due to the exchange interaction with the neighboring spins. ©1998 American Physical Society.

  • The potential role of producer and consumer food policies in the EU to sustainable food and nutrition security
  • 2018
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • EU sustainable food and nutrition security is no sure-fire success. The future ofthe agro-food system is uncertain and subject to different macro-level trends.Previous analysis revealed the role of food system drivers creating challenges andopportunities for dietary and environmental improvements under certain futureconstellations. However, these challenges and opportunities need to be addressed by policies to allow for actual improvements in the sustainabilityperformance of EU food systems, for people, planet and profit. In this deliverable,an assessment and pre-test of potential policy measures is carried out. The policyanalyses are contrasted to a ‘business-as-usual’ baseline scenario with currenttrends of food system drivers. We apply the SUSFANS modelling toolbox in orderto test relevant policy measures in four distinct aqua-agro-food policy sectors.Regarding health and nutrition of the EU population, we provide a ranking ofpotential dietary policies and interventions based on their effectiveness, implementation costs and restrictiveness for consumers and producers. Based onthis overview, options for health and nutrition policy are designed containing amixture of different policy instruments. These apply – in line with the allocationof policy responsibilities in the EU - at the level of individual member states andnot at the realms of an EU policy. In the context of the Common AgriculturalPolicy (CAP), we assess the impact of a livestock density restriction on EU Agricultural areas. Results indicate a reduction of soil nutrient surpluses (-9 to -13%) and of greenhouse gas emissions (-9%) at EU average and considerably stronger in the livestock density and over-fertilization hotspots. Trade openness restricts the impact on food consumption and dietary change of EU consumers. Three Common Fisheries Policies (CFP) are tested with the newly developed fish modules of GLOBIOM and CAPRI: Directing capture in EU waters to levels that keep fish stocks at the maximum sustainable yield (MSY), or at the maximum economic yield (MEY), and the implementation of national aquaculture growth plans composed by EU member states. Our results show limited policy impacts due to the rlatively small size of the EU fish producing sector with some trade butlimited consumption changes. Finally, different storage policies are tested with the new short-term volatility module of GLOBIOM. The scenarios reveal that storage availability and intervention prices reduce price volatility caused by yield shocks. The assessments illustrate that individual, yet unaligned policy measures can already contribute significantly to reaching sustainable food and nutritionsecurity. On the way to the final foresight assessment extensions are require regarding a) metrics quantifiability, b) the harmonization of metrics computationapproaches, and c) smaller model improvements

  • Identification of a gene network driving the attenuated response to lipopolysaccharide of monocytes from hypertensive coronary artery disease patients
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Frontiers in Immunology. - : Frontiers Media SA. - 1664-3224. ; 15
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Introduction: The impact of cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors, encompassing various biological determinants and unhealthy lifestyles, on the functional dynamics of circulating monocytes—a pivotal cell type in CVD pathophysiology remains elusive. In this study, we aimed to elucidate the influence of CVD risk factors on monocyte transcriptional responses to an infectious stimulus. Methods: We conducted a comparative analysis of monocyte gene expression profiles from the CTMM – CIRCULATING CELLS Cohort of coronary artery disease (CAD) patients, at baseline and after lipopolysaccharide (LPS) stimulation. Gene co-expression analysis was used to identify gene modules and their correlations with CVD risk factors, while pivotal transcription factors controlling the hub genes in these modules were identified by regulatory network analyses. The identified gene module was subjected to a drug repurposing screen, utilizing the LINCS L1000 database. Results: Monocyte responsiveness to LPS showed a highly significant, negative correlation with blood pressure levels (ρ< -0.4; P<10-80). We identified a ZNF12/ZBTB43-driven gene module closely linked to diastolic blood pressure, suggesting that monocyte responses to infectious stimuli, such as LPS, are attenuated in CAD patients with elevated diastolic blood pressure. This attenuation appears associated with a dampening of the LPS-induced suppression of oxidative phosphorylation. Finally, we identified the serine-threonine inhibitor MW-STK33-97 as a drug candidate capable of reversing this aberrant LPS response. Conclusions: Monocyte responses to infectious stimuli may be hampered in CAD patients with high diastolic blood pressure and this attenuated inflammatory response may be reversed by the serine-threonine inhibitor MW-STK33-97. Whether the identified gene module is a mere indicator of, or causal factor in diastolic blood pressure and the associated dampened LPS responses remains to be determined.

  • Large magnetic circular dichroism in resonant inelastic x-ray scattering at the Mn L-edge of Mn-Zn ferrite
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. Condensed Matter and Materials Physics. - : American Physical Society. - 1098-0121 .- 1550-235X. ; 74
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Wereport resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) excited by circularly polarizedx rays on Mn-Zn ferrite at the Mn L2,3 resonances. We demonstrate that crystal-field excitations, as expected for localized systems, dominate the RIXS spectra and thus their dichroic asymmetry cannotbe interpreted in terms of spin-resolved partial density of states, which has been the standard approach for RIXS dichroism. Weobserve large dichroic RIXS at the L2 resonance which weattribute to the absence of metallic core hole screening inthe insulating Mn ferrite. On the other hand, reduced L3-RIXSdichroism is interpreted as an effect of longer scattering timethat enables spin-lattice core hole relaxation via magnons and phononsoccurring on a femtosecond time scale.

  • Genome-wide association study identifies multiple susceptibility loci for multiple myeloma
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Nature Communications. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2041-1723. ; 7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Multiple myeloma (MM) is a plasma cell malignancy with a significant heritable basis. Genome-wide association studies have transformed our understanding of MM predisposition, but individual studies have had limited power to discover risk loci. Here we perform a meta-analysis of these GWAS, add a new GWAS and perform replication analyses resulting in 9,866 cases and 239,188 controls. We confirm all nine known risk loci and discover eight new loci at 6p22.3 (rs34229995, P = 1.31 x 10(-8)), 6q21 (rs9372120, P = 9.09 x 10(-15)), 7q36.1 (rs7781265, P = 9.71 x 10(-9)), 8q24.21 (rs1948915, P = 4.20 x 10(-11)), 9p21.3 (rs2811710, P = 1.72 x 10(-13)), 10p12.1 (rs2790457, P = 1.77 x 10(-8)), 16q23.1 (rs7193541, P = 5.00 x 10(-12)) and 20q13.13 (rs6066835, P = 1.36 x 10(-13)), which localize in or near to JARID2, ATG5, SMARCD3, CCAT1, CDKN2A, WAC, RFWD3 and PREX1. These findings provide additional support for a polygenic model of MM and insight into the biological basis of tumour development.

  • Genetic correlation between multiple myeloma and chronic lymphocytic leukaemia provides evidence for shared aetiology
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Blood Cancer Journal. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2044-5385. ; 9:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The clustering of different types of B-cell malignancies in families raises the possibility of shared aetiology. To examine this, we performed cross-trait linkage disequilibrium (LD)-score regression of multiple myeloma (MM) and chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL) genome-wide association study (GWAS) data sets, totalling 11,734 cases and 29,468 controls. A significant genetic correlation between these two B-cell malignancies was shown (Rg = 0.4, P = 0.0046). Furthermore, four of the 45 known CLL risk loci were shown to associate with MM risk and five of the 23 known MM risk loci associate with CLL risk. By integrating eQTL, Hi-C and ChIP-seq data, we show that these pleiotropic risk loci are enriched for B-cell regulatory elements and implicate B-cell developmental genes. These data identify shared biological pathways influencing the development of CLL and, MM and further our understanding of the aetiological basis of these B-cell malignancies.
