  • A control oriented strategy of disruption prediction to avoid the configuration collapse of tokamak reactors

    • The objective of thermonuclear fusion consists of producing electricity from the coalescence of light nuclei in high temperature plasmas. The most promising route to fusion envisages the confinement of such plasmas with magnetic fields, whose most studied configuration is the tokamak. Disruptions are catastrophic collapses affecting all tokamak devices and one of the main potential showstoppers on the route to a commercial reactor. In this work we report how, deploying innovative analysis methods on thousands of JET experiments covering the isotopic compositions from hydrogen to full tritium and including the major D-T campaign, the nature of the various forms of collapse is investigated in all phases of the discharges. An original approach to proximity detection has been developed, which allows determining both the probability of and the time interval remaining before an incoming disruption, with adaptive, from scratch, real time compatible techniques. The results indicate that physics based prediction and control tools can be developed, to deploy realistic strategies of disruption avoidance and prevention, meeting the requirements of the next generation of devices.

    • An overview of the modeling approaches, validation methods and recent main results of analysis and modeling activities related to the plasma-surface interaction (PSI) in JET-ILW experiments, including the recent H/D/T campaigns, is presented in this paper. Code applications to JET experiments improve general erosion/migration/retention prediction capabilities as well as various physics extensions, for instance a treatment of dust particles transport and a detailed description of melting and splashing of PFC induced by transient events at JET. 2D plasma edge transport codes like the SOLPS-ITER code as well as PSI codes are key to realistic description of relevant physical processes in power and particle exhaust. Validation of the PSI and edge transport models across JET experiments considering various effects (isotope effects, first wall geometry, including detailed 3D shaping of plasma-facing components, self-sputtering, thermo-forces, physical and chemically assisted physical sputtering formation of W and Be hydrides) is very important for predictive simulations of W and Be erosion and migration in ITER as well as for increasing quantitative credibility of the models. JET also presents a perfect test-bed for the investigation and modeling of melt material dynamics and its splashing and droplet ejection mechanisms. We attribute the second group of processes rather to transient events as for the steady state and, thus, treat those as independent additions outside the interplay with the first group.

  • Shear strength and shear stiffness analysis of compacted Wyoming-type bentonite

    • Wyoming-type bentonite is one of the materials to be used as part of the Engineered Barrier System (EBS) in deep geological disposal facilities for the safe disposal of spent nuclear fuel. In the KBS-3 type repository, the canisters containing the spent fuel assemblies are surrounded by bentonite buffer. Therefore, it is necessary to understand the bentonite behaviour in shearing conditions for the long-term performance assessment of the canisters. Bentonite shearing could arise, for example, due to potential post-glacial earthquakes. The deviatoric stress at failure and the shear modulus of a compacted Wyoming-type bentonite were measured using different shearing tests. Tests were carried out on unsaturated samples at three laboratories. The shearing tests on unsaturated samples were unconfined and triaxial compression tests, hollow cylinder tests and simple shear tests. Unconfined and triaxial compression tests were also carried out on saturated samples. The failure was quite ductile when tests were carried out with confining pressure. The samples were compacted at different dry densities and degrees of saturation and tested at different confining pressures and strain levels to study their influence on the shear properties. Shear strength and shear modulus were studied based on models that consider the double porosity structure of the bentonites. Previously published triaxial tests and resonant column test results were also included in this study. In combination with these models, several alternatives for the definition of the constitutive stress were checked for the case of bentonite. A novel, approach, involving the results of mercury intrusion porosimetry in estimating the constitutive stress, was introduced. The shear strength calculated by the models showed a good agreement with the measured values. In some cases, unrealistic large tensile stresses were predicted. Furthermore, the models can assess the tendency of the shear modulus as a function of the shear strain, degree of saturation and dry density.

    • The JET hybrid scenario has been developed from low plasma current carbon wall discharges to the record-breaking Deuterium-Tritium plasmas obtained in 2021 with the ITER-like Be/W wall. The development started in pure Deuterium with refinement of the plasma current, and toroidal magnetic field choices and succeeded in solving the heat load challenges arising from 37 MW of injected power in the ITER like wall environment, keeping the radiation in the edge and core controlled, avoiding MHD instabilities and reaching high neutron rates. The Deuterium hybrid plasmas have been re-run in Tritium and methods have been found to keep the radiation controlled but not at high fusion performance probably due to time constraints. For the first time this scenario has been run in Deuterium-Tritium (50:50). These plasmas were re-optimised to have a radiation-stable H-mode entry phase, good impurity control through edge Ti gradient screening and optimised performance with fusion power exceeding 10 MW for longer than three alpha particle slow down times, 8.3 MW averaged over 5 s and fusion energy of 45.8 MJ.

    • This new tectonic synthesis provides a framework for understanding the dynamic evolution of Baltica and for constraining tectonic correlations within the context of the Neoproterozoic break-up of Rodinia–Pannotia. Cryogenian Baltica is described with respect to five geographic regions: the northwest, northeast, east, south, and southwest (modern coordinates). These geographic regions define three principal Cryogenian tectonic margins: a rifting northwestern margin, a passive northeastern margin, and a poorly understood southern margin. The northwest region is characterized by Neoproterozoic to lower Ordovician sedimentary successions deposited on Archean to late Mesoproterozoic crystalline complexes, reworked during Caledonian orogenesis. Lare Neoproterozoic to lower Ordovician sedimentary strata record the change from an alluvial setting to a marine environment, and eventually to a partially starved (?) turbidite basin. They document rifting from the Rodinian-Pannotian supercontinent, which was unsuccessful until ca. 620–550 Ma when voluminous dikes and mafic/ultramafic complexes were intruded. Baltica's northeastern and eastern regions document episodic intracratonic rifting throughout the Mesoproterozoic, followed by pericontinental passive margin deposition throughout the Cryogenian. In the northeast platformal and deeper-water basin deposits are preserved, whereas the eastern region was later affected by Paleozoic rifting and preserves only shelf deposits. The northeastern and eastern regions define Baltica's Cryogenian northeastern tectonic margin, which was an ocean-facing passive margin of the Rodinia–Pannotia supercontinent. It remained a passive margin until the onset of Timanian orogenesis at ca. 615 Ma, approximately synchronous with the time of Rodinia–Pannotia rifting. Baltica's southern and southwestern regions remain enigmatic and controversial. Precambrian basement is generally hidden beneath thick successions of Ediacaran and younger platform sediments. Similarities between these regions exist, however, and suggest that they may share a similar tectonic evolution in the Cryogenian and therefore define the southern tectonic margin of Baltica at this time. Paleo- to Mesoproterozic basement was affected by Neoproterozoic and younger tectonism, including Cryogenian (?) and Ediacaran rifting. This was followed by Ediacaran (ca. 550 Ma) passive margin sediment deposition at the time of Rodinia–Pannotia break-up, until Early Paleozoic accretion of allochthonous terranes record the transition from rifting to a compressional regime. Paleomagnetic and paleontological data are consistent with Baltica and Laurentia drifting together between ca. 750 and 550 Ma, when they had similar apparent polar wander paths. Microfossil assemblages along the eastern margin of Laurentia and the western margin of Baltica (modern coordinates), suggest proximity between these two margins at this time. At ca. 550 Ma, Laurentia and Baltica separated, consistent with paleomagnetic, paleontological, and geological data, and a late break-up for Rodinia–Pannotia.

  • Prenatal exposures and infant brain: Review of magnetic resonance imaging studies and a population description analysis

    • Brain development is most rapid during the fetal period and the first years of life. This process can be affected by many in utero factors, such as chemical exposures and maternal health characteristics. The goal of this review is twofold: to review the most recent findings on the effects of these prenatal factors on the developing brain and to qualitatively assess how those factors were generally reported in studies on infants up to 2 years of age. To capture the latest findings in the field, we searched articles from PubMed 2012 onward with search terms referring to magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), brain development, and infancy. We identified 19 MRI studies focusing on the effects of prenatal environment and summarized them to highlight the recent advances in the field. We assessed population descriptions in a representative sample of 67 studies and conclude that prenatal factors that have been shown to affect brain metrics are not generally reported comprehensively. Based on our findings, we propose some improvements for population descriptions to account for plausible confounders and in time enable reliable meta-analyses to be performed. This could help the pediatric neuroimaging field move toward more reliable identification of biomarkers for developmental outcomes and to better decipher the nuances of normal and abnormal brain development.
