  • Nordic networks : patent agents and the business of technology intermediation in Sweden and Finland, 1860–1910
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Economic History Review. - : Routledge. - 0358-5522 .- 1750-2837. ; 68:1, s. 45-65
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The article analyses Swedish and Finnish patent agents and their businesses at the turn of the twentieth century. Due to legal requirements, all foreign patent applications had to pass through the hands of patent agents. Despite the central role, this transnational business of technology intermediation has received only limited attention in the scholarship. The article studies the business relationships between the patent agents and their clients, and employs new datasets, which include information about all foreign patentees using a patent agent in 1860–1910. The main findings are that the transnational business relationships affected the specialisation of national patent agents, especially in Finland, where patent agents with a legal background contributed to the inflow of inventions managed by Swedish patent agents. Patent agent services also represented significant indirect costs of the patent systems for their foreign clients.

  • DiPaDA 2022 : Proceedings of the Digital Parliamentary Data in Action (DiPaDA 2022) Workshop
  • 2022
  • Proceedings (redaktörskap) (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The workshop Digital Parliamentary Data in Action (DiPaDA 2022) was organised in Uppsala on March 15, 2022, co-located with the 6th Digital Humanities in the Nordic and Baltic Countries Conference (DHNB). These workshop proceedings reflect the aims of the workshop to foster interaction and stimulate conversations between humanities, social sciences, and computational sciences – representing scholars from the Nordic region and beyond that work with digital parliamentary data. The contributions in the proceedings present results of ongoing research on creating and using historical and present parliamentary data to study parliamentary culture, politics, language use, and the media. Moreover, the contributions offer novel perspectives on applying, curating, and representing this key societal data, and discuss the future opportunities and challenges in such research.

  • The Labourious Cleaning : Acquiring and Transforming 19th-Century Epistolary Metadata
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: DHNB2023 Conference Proceedings. - Oslo.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The paper documents the process of collecting, consolidating, and publishing epistolary metadata from Finnish cultural heritage organizations to create an archive for bottom-up analyses of 19th-century epistolary culture. We describe and discuss the data survey that was conducted to gather information about available letter collections across Finland, as well as the cleaning and harmonizing of over 350,000 letters from twelve different sources in various digital formats. We have also developed a data model that combines event-based and letter-based aspects of the metadata. Furthermore, the paper contributes tothe ongoing discussion of the initial phases of data-intensive research and the importance of discussing the labor of cleaning data. We believe that our experiences described in this paper can have wider significance for other digital humanities projects in Europe.

  • Between Technological Nostalgia and Engineering Imperialism: Digital History Readings of China in the Finnish Technoindustrial Public Sphere 1880–1912
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Tekniikan waiheita - Teknik i tiden. - : Tekniikan waiheita. - 0780-5772. ; 37:1, s. 7-40
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • How does foreign technology affect the country's industrialization? This issue is approached through "technological geopolitics" by examining the views and interpretations of Finnish technology players regarding the East Asian superpower, China's technology and industrialization. The article examines how Imperial China was portrayed in the central forum of Finland's "technical-industrial publicity" in 1880-1912, in Finnish technical magazines. This article brings a new perspective to the field of research in the history of Finnish technology by mapping the relationship between Finland and China through technology and industrialization. It also offers a new approach to research into digital history through qualitative and quantitative search and reading (" readsearch”) To Finnish technical journals. The study reveals how Chinese technology and industry appeared in the press in two main ways. First, the texts described China's early history and traditional technology, which served as a "nostalgic" counterpart to the latest Western industrial advances. Second, when dealing with newer technologies of the era, the focus of newspaper texts was on the strengths of the West, and attention was paid to exploiting China's economic and commercial potential or the country's natural resources. The article deepens this aspect of superpower politics by examining the careers of two Finnish engineers in the service of Western colonial endeavors, thus illuminating previously neglected Finnish imperialist attitudes.

  • Finnish Parliament on the Semantic Web : Using ParliamentSampo Data Service and Semantic Portal for Studying Political Culture and Language
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the Digital Parliamentary Data in Action (DiPaDA 2022) Workshop. - : CEUR. ; , s. 69-85
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper introduces the system ParliamentSampo – Parliament of Finland on the Semantic Web, a Linked Open Data (LOD) service, data infrastructure, and semantic portal for studying Finnish political culture, language, and networks of the Members of Parliament (MP). The article presents the vision behind the system, the LOD service, and explores the possibilities to utilize it in research and application development. A knowledge graph of linked data has been created based on ca. 962 000 speeches in all plenary sessions of the Parliament of Finland in 1907—2021; the data is also available in XML format, utilizing the new international Parla-CLARIN format. For the first time, the entire time series of the Finnish parliamentary speeches has been converted into data and a data service in a unified format. In addition, the speeches have been interlinked with another knowledge graph created from the database of the MPs and enriched from other data sources into a broader ontology-based data service. The paper shows how the LOD service SPARQL endpoint can be used to research parliamentary culture, the use of political language, and networks of politicians through data analysis. The service endpoint can also be used to develop applications for different user groups without programming skills, such as the ParliamentSampo semantic portal introduced in the paper, too. This application aims to make political decision making more transparent to the general public, media, politicians, and other end users.

  • Plenary Speeches of the Parliament of Finland as Linked Open Data and Data Services
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Joint Proceedings of the Second International Workshop on Knowledge Graph Generation From Text and the First International BiKE Challenge co-located with 20th Extended Semantic Conference (ESWC 2023). - : CEUR.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents a new open infrastructure called ParliamentSampo for studying the parliamentary culture, language, and activities of politicians in Finland. For the first time, the entire time series of some million plenary speeches of the Parliament of Finland (PoF) since 1907 have been converted into data and data services in unified formats, including CSV, Parla-CLARIN, ParlaMint, and RDF Linked Open Data (LOD). The speech data have been interlinked with an ontology and a knowledge graph about the activities of the Members of Parliament (MP) and other speakers in the plenary sessions of the PoF, enriched by data linking from external data sources into a broader ontology-based LOD service. Knowledge extraction techniques based on Natural Language Processing (NLP) were used for automatic semantic annotations and topical classification of the speeches. The data and data services have been used in Digital Humanities (DH) research projects and for application development, especially for developing the in-use semantic portal ParliamentSampo. The infrastructure was published on February 14th 2023 on the Web using the open CC BY 4.0 license, and quickly gathered thousands of users.

  • Running out of time : Using job ads to analyse the demand for messengers in the twentieth century
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Economic History Review. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0358-5522 .- 1750-2837. ; , s. 1-20
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Youth labour remained important well into the twentieth century, although it is often elusive in traditional sources. In this article, we investigate messengers – a category of occupational titles, including errand and office boys, which is thought of as youth jobs. We sketch the long-term development of the occupation by making use of digitised Swedish daily newspapers and discuss demand-side, supply-side and institutional factors for the disappearance of the occupation. Our investigation suggests that the messenger jobs reached their peak around 1945 and thereafter decreased to low levels in the 1960s. We find that employers looking for messengers were large organisations that needed in-house help with deliveries and simple office tasks. These employers originally aimed at young men aged 15–17 years. The minimum age requirement was not loosened over time; instead, employers began to announce for older workers. We interpret this as employers’ adapting to a situation where the supply of young messengers had decreased. Employers made their ads appealing by emphasising good working conditions and career prospects, indicating that there was still a demand for messengers despite the changing times.
