  • Simultaneous operation of two soft x-ray free-electron lasers driven by one linear accelerator
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: New Journal of Physics. - : IOP Publishing. - 1367-2630. ; 18
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Extreme-ultraviolet to x-ray free-electron lasers (FELs) in operation for scientific applications are up to now single-user facilities. While most FELs generate around 100 photon pulses per second, FLASH at DESY can deliver almost two orders of magnitude more pulses in this time span due to its superconducting accelerator technology. This makes the facility a prime candidate to realize the next step in FELs-dividing the electron pulse trains into several FEL lines and delivering photon pulses to several users at the same time. Hence, FLASH has been extended with a second undulator line and self-amplified spontaneous emission (SASE) is demonstrated in both FELs simultaneously. FLASH can now deliver MHz pulse trains to two user experiments in parallel with individually selected photon beam characteristics. First results of the capabilities of this extension are shown with emphasis on independent variation of wavelength, repetition rate, and photon pulse length.

  • Electronic Structure of an XUV Photogenerated Solid-Density Aluminum Plasma
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 0031-9007 .- 1079-7114. ; 104:22, s. 225001-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • By use of high intensity XUV radiation from the FLASH free-electron laser at DESY, we have created highly excited exotic states of matter in solid-density aluminum samples. The XUV intensity is sufficiently high to excite an inner-shell electron from a large fraction of the atoms in the focal region. We show that soft-x-ray emission spectroscopy measurements reveal the electronic temperature and density of this highly excited system immediately after the excitation pulse, with detailed calculations of the electronic structure, based on finite-temperature density functional theory, in good agreement with the experimental results.

  • Volt-per-Ångstrom terahertz fields from X-ray free-electron lasers
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of Synchrotron Radiation. - 0909-0495 .- 1600-5775. ; 27, s. 796-798
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The electron linear accelerators driving modern X-ray free-electron lasers can emit intense, tunable, quasi-monochromatic terahertz (THz) transients with peak electric fields of V Ångstrom(-1) and peak magnetic fields in excess of 10 T when a purpose-built, compact, superconducting THz undulator is implemented. New research avenues such as X-ray movies of THz-driven mode-selective chemistry come into reach by making dual use of the ultra-short GeV electron bunches, possible by a rather minor extension of the infrastructure.

  • Emission of thermally activated electrons from rare gas clusters irradiated with intense VUV light pulses from a free electron laser
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 1079-7114. ; 95:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The ionization dynamics of Ar and Xe clusters irradiated with intense vacuum ultraviolet light from a free-electron laser is investigated using photoelectron spectroscopy. Clusters comprising between 70 and 900 atoms were irradiated with femtosecond pulses at 95 nm wavelength (similar to 13 eV photon energy) and a peak intensity of similar to 4x10(12) W/cm(2). A broad thermal distribution of emitted electrons from clusters with a maximum kinetic energy up to 30-40 eV is observed. The observation of relatively low-energy photoelectrons is in good agreement with calculations using a time-dependent Thomas-Fermi model and gives experimental evidence of an outer ionization process of the clusters, due to delayed thermoelectronic emission.

  • Extreme Ultraviolet Wave Packet Interferometry of the Autoionizing HeNe Dimer
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physical Chemistry Letters. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1948-7185. ; 13:36, s. 8470-8476
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Femtosecond extreme ultraviolet wave packet interferometry (XUV-WPI) was applied to study resonant interatomic Coulombic decay (ICD) in the HeNe dimer. The high demands on phase stability and sensitivity for vibronic XUV-WPI of molecular-beam targets are met using an XUV phase-cycling scheme. The detected quantum interferences exhibit vibronic dephasing and rephasing signatures along with an ultrafast decoherence assigned to the ICD process. A Fourier analysis reveals the molecular absorption spectrum with high resolution. The demonstrated experiment shows a promising route for the real-time analysis of ultrafast ICD processes with both high temporal and high spectral resolution. © 2022 American Chemical Society.

  • Excitation dynamics of Rydberg states in C60
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal D. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6060 .- 1434-6079. ; 36, s. 339-351
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The electron and nuclear dynamics of C60 fullerenes irradiated with femtosecond laser pulses are investigated with photoelectron and photoion spectroscopy. The focus of this work is the detailed exploration of the population mechanism of Rydberg levels within the excitation process of neutral C60. The effect of excitation wavelength, intensity, chirp, and polarization on the kinetic energy distribution of photoelectrons in single-pulse experiments gives first insight into the underlying processes. In combination with time-resolved two-color pump-probe spectroscopy depending on either pump, or probe pulse intensity, a more complete picture of the interaction can be drawn. The results point towards a very interesting but nevertheless complex behavior including four steps: (i) non-adiabatic multielectron excitation of the HOMO (hu) → LUMO+1 (t1g) transition; (ii) thermalization within the hot electron cloud on a time scale below 100fs, followed by a coupling of energy to vibrational modes of the molecule via doorway state(s); (iii) population of electronically excited Rydberg states by multiphoton absorption, and (iv) single photon ionization from the excited Rydberg states. This excitation process results in a characteristic sequence of photoelectron lines in the photoemission spectra. The comparison of the experimental results with recent theoretical work gives convincing evidence that non-adiabatic multielectron dynamics (NMED) plays a key role for the understanding of the response of C60 to short-pulse laser radiation.

  • First direct seeding at 38 nm
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: FEL 2012 - 34th International Free Electron Laser Conference. - 9783954501236 ; , s. 197-199
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The sFLASH project at DESY is an experiment to study direct seeding using a source based on the high-harmonic generation (HHG) process. In contrast to SASE, a seeded FEL exhibits greatly improved longitudinal coherence and higher shot-to-shot stability (both spectral and energetic). In addition, the output of the seeded FEL is intrinsically synchronized to the HHG drive laser, thus enabling pump-probe experiments with a resolution of the order of 10 fs. The installation and successful commissioning of the sFLASH components in 2010/2011 has been followed by a planned upgrade in autumn 2011. As a result of these improvements, in spring 2012 direct HHG seeding at 38 nm has been successfully demonstrated. In this contribution, we describe the experimental layout and announce the first seeding at 38 nm.

  • Energy absorption of free rare gas clusters irradiated by intense VUV pulses of a free electron laser
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research, Section A: Accelerators, Spectrometers, Detectors and Associated Equipment. - 0168-9002. ; 507:1-2, s. 572-576
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • As one of the first experiments at the free electron laser of the TESLA Test Facility (TTF) the Coulomb explosion of Xenon clusters irradiated with high intensity pulses at a wavelength of 98 nm has been observed. Classical trajectory calculations have been performed in order to illuminate the energy absorption process. Comparison with typical parameters in the infrared regime shows that above barrier ionization is suppressed due to the fast oscillating field and thermionic ionization prevails.

  • Improved stabilization scheme for extreme ultraviolet quantum interference experiments
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics B: Atomic, Molecular and Optical Physics. - : IOP Publishing. - 0953-4075 .- 1361-6455. ; 55
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Interferometric pump-probe experiments in the extreme ultraviolet (XUV) domain are experimentally very challenging due to the high phase stability required between the XUV pulses. Recently, an efficient phase stabilization scheme was introduced for seeded XUV free electron lasers (FELs) combining shot-to-shot phase modulation with lock-in detection [A. Wituschek et al., Nat Commun 11, 1 (2020)]. This method stabilized the seed laser beampath on the fundamental ultraviolet wavelength to a high degree. Here, we extend this scheme including the stabilization of the XUV beampath, incorporating phase fluctuations from the FEL high gain harmonic generation process. Our analysis reveals a clear signal improvement with the new method compared to the previous stabilization scheme.
