  • Comparison of Moisturizing Creams for the Prevention of Atopic Dermatitis Relapse: A Randomized Double-blind Controlled Multicentre Clinical Trial

    • Atopic dermatitis (AD) affects adults and children and has a negative impact on quality of life. The present multicentre randomized double-blind controlled trial showed a barrier-improving cream (5% urea) to be superior to a reference cream in preventing eczema relapse in patients with AD (hazard ratio 0.634, p = 0.011). The risk of eczema relapse was reduced by 37% (95% confidence interval (95% CI) 10-55%). Median time to relapse in the test cream group and in the reference cream group was 22 days and 15 days, respectively (p = 0.013). At 6 months 26% of the patients in the test cream group were still eczema free, compared with 10% in the reference cream group. Thus, the barrier-improving cream significantly prolonged the eczema-free time compared with the reference cream and decreased the risk of eczema relapse. The test cream was well tolerated in patients with AD.

    • Directed towards the multidisciplinary research field on carbon capture and storage (CCS), this paper reports empirically on progress towards a groupware system (collaborative software) and experiences learned when creating groupware for CCS research. As subsurface CO2 storage requires collaboration across a wide range of CCS disciplines, we describe the collaborative challenges faced and how our proposed groupware addresses these, and present criteria for CCS groupware and a field study over three iterations evaluating how well various software systems fulfill those criteria. In iteration one, we evaluate a commercial and feature-rich stand-alone application used together with a conferencing application. Based on this evaluation, in iteration two we develop and evaluate a custom-built lightweight web application. In the third and last iteration, we present a prototype that uses the most useful features from the two evaluated solutions. Finally, we give a suggestion of how to implement a groupware fulfilling all requirements identified for a successful CCS groupware.

    • The VIRCOLA project addresses important challenges, which arise in cross-disciplinary research related to subsurface storage of CO2. The specific background for the VIRCOLA project is the research work performed in the SUCCESS centre (Subsurface CO2 storage - Critical Elements and Superior Strategy). One of the case studies in the SUCCESS centre is the Longyearbyen CO2 Lab in Svalbard. A key challenge in working with a large, multidisciplinary project such as SUCCESS is large amount of available data. It is also challenging to utilize and visualize the multi-scale and multimodal data types. Additionally, it is a challenge with regards to effective collaboration as researchers are located at different locations. Our approach involves three major components: the VIRCOLA data repository, a visualization platform for cross discipline research, and finally a remote collaboration platform to access to visualizations from anywhere. We demonstrated our approach for partner researchers. The result has been promising, as researchers were enthusiastic to apply our approach in their research within the center, and our test demonstrations were encouraging to our partners. It is our aim to adapt our approach on a national scale, i.e. in other large CO2 research projects on the Norwegian shelf.

  • Clinical management of atopic dermatitis in adults : Mapping of expert opinion in 4 nordic countries using a modified delphi process

    • Similarities and differences in the everyday clinical management of moderate-to-severe atopic dermatitis in Nordic countries are unknown. Using a modified Delphi approach, 15 dermatologists from Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden completed face-to-face and online questionnaires and participated in summary discussions to map expert opinion on the clinical management of moderate-to-severe atopic dermatitis in these Nordic countries. Through discussions, 6 adult patient profiles, reflecting common disease presentations of atopic dermatitis, were identified. Using these case profiles, diagnostic work-up, treatment goals, patient education and treatment approaches were discussed. Patient education was identified as essential for effective management. A treatment sequence of moderate-to-potent topical glucocorticosteroids and emollients, followed by systemic treatment, was recommended, allowing 3 months to ascertain systemic treatment response before switching, if necessary. Consensus was not reached on systemic treatment choice, reflecting differences in clinical practice and reimbursement between countries. Practical, case-based clinical recommendations were developed for optimal patient care.
