  • E4-Mistra, a research program for the development of an energy efficient low emission exhaust aftertreatment system for heavy duty vehicles
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: World Renewable Energy Forum, WREF 2012, Including World Renewable Energy Congress XII and Colorado Renewable Energy Society (CRES) Annual Conference. - : American Solar Energy Society. - 9781622760923 ; , s. 4530-4536
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents a unique system approach applied in a joint academic - industrial research program, E4 Mistra, to reach the goals of energy efficiency and low emissions exhaust aftertreatment system for heavy duty vehicles. The high energy efficiency is achieved by heat recuperation, on-board hydrogen production for use in both an auxiliary power unit and for NOx reduction and by finding new solutions for making the after-treatment system active at low exhaust temperatures. To reach low particulate emissions a mechanical filter using a sintered metal filter is developed. Low NOx emissions are achieved by an efficient NOx reduction catalyst. The system is based on four technological advances: Thermoelectric material s for heat recuperation, catalytic reduction of NOx over innovative catalyst substrates using hydrocarbons from the fuel and H2 from a high efficiency fuel reformer, and particulate filtration over a porous metal filter.

  • Data acquisition system for the PoGOLite astronomical hard X-ray polarimeter
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Science Symposium Conference Record, 2007. - 9781424409228 ; , s. 445-449, s. 445-449
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The PoGOLite is a new balloon-borne instrument to measure the polarization of hard X-rays/soft gamma-rays in the 25-80 keV energy range for the first time. In order to detect the polarization, PoGOLite measures the azimuthal angle asymmetry of Compton scattering and the subsequent photo-absorption in an array of detectors. This array consists of 217 well-type phoswich detector cells (PDCs) surrounded by a side anti-coincidence shield (SAS) composed of 54 segments of BGO crystals. At balloon altitude, the intensity of backgrounds due to cosmic-ray charged particles, atmospheric gamma-rays and neutrons is extremely high, typically a few hundred Hz per unit. Hence the data acquisition (DAQ) system of PoGOLite is required to handle more than 270 signals simultaneously, and detect weak signals from astrophysical objects (100mCrab, 1.5 cs(-1) in 25-80 keV) under such a severe environment. We have developed a new DAQ system consisting of front-end electronics, waveform digitizer, Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) and a microprocessor. In this system, all output signals of PDC / SAS are fed into individual charge-sensitive amplifier and then digitized to 12 bit accuracy at 24 MSa/s by pipelined analog to digital converters. A DAQ board for the PDC records waveforms which will be examined in an off-line analysis to distinguish signals from the background events and measure the energy spectrum and polarization of targets. A board for the SAS records hit pattern to be used for background rejection. It also continuously records a pulse-height analysis (PHA) histogram to monitor incident background flux. These basic functions of the DAQ system were verified in a series of beam tests.

  • Measuring energy dependent polarization in soft gamma-rays using compton scattering in PoGOLite
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Astroparticle physics. - : Elsevier. - 0927-6505 .- 1873-2852. ; 28:3, s. 327-337
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Linear polarization in X-and gamma-rays is an important diagnostic of many astrophysical sources, foremost giving information about their geometry, magnetic fields, and radiation mechanisms. However, very few X-ray polarization measurements have been made, and then only mono-energetic detections, whilst several objects are assumed to have energy dependent polarization signatures. In this paper, we investigate whether detection of energy dependent polarization from cosmic sources is possible using the Compton technique, in particular with the proposed PoGOLite balloon-experiment, in the 25-100 keV range. We use Geant4 simulations of a PoGOLite model and input photon spectra based on Cygnus X-1 and accreting magnetic pulsars (100 mCrab). Effective observing times of 6 and 35 h were simulated, corresponding to a standard and a long duration flight, respectively. Both smooth and sharp energy variations of the polarization are investigated and compared to constant polarization signals using chi-square statistics. We can reject constant polarization, with energy, for the Cygnus X-1 spectrum (in the hard state), if the reflected component is assumed to be completely polarized, whereas the distinction cannot be made for weaker polarization. For the accreting pulsar, constant polarization can be rejected in the case of polarization in a narrow energy band with at least 50% polarization, and similarly for a negative step distribution from 30% to 0% polarization.

  • Identification of the BCAR1-CFDP1-TMEM170A Locus as a Determinant of Carotid Intima-Media Thickness and Coronary Artery Disease Risk
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Circulation: Cardiovascular Genetics. - 1942-325X .- 1942-3268. ; 5:6, s. 656-665
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background-Carotid intima-media thickness (cIMT) is a widely accepted marker of subclinical atherosclerosis. To date, large-scale investigations of genetic determinants of cIMT are sparse. Methods and Results-To identify cIMT-associated genes and genetic variants, a discovery analysis using the Illumina 200K CardioMetabochip was conducted in 3430 subjects with detailed ultrasonographic determinations of cIMT from the IMPROVE (Carotid Intima Media Thickness [IMT] and IMT-Progression as Predictors of Vascular Events in a High Risk European Population) study. Segment-specific IMT measurements of common carotid, bifurcation, and internal carotid arteries, and composite IMT variables considering the whole carotid tree (IMTmean, IMTmax, and IMTmean-max), were analyzed. A replication stage investigating 42 single-nucleotide polymorphisms for association with common carotid IMT was undertaken in 5 independent European cohorts (total n=11 590). A locus on chromosome 16 (lead single-nucleotide polymorphism rs4888378, intronic in CFDP1) was associated with cIMT at significance levels passing multiple testing correction at both stages (array-wide significant discovery P=6.75x10(-7) for IMTmax; replication P=7.24x10(-6) for common cIMT; adjustments for sex, age, and population substructure where applicable; minor allele frequency 0.43 and 0.41, respectively). The protective minor allele was associated with lower carotid plaque score in a replication cohort (P=0.04, n=2120) and lower coronary artery disease risk in 2 case-control studies of subjects with European ancestry (odds ratio [95% confidence interval] 0.83 [0.77-0.90], P=6.53x10(-6), n=13 591; and 0.95 [0.92-0.98], P=1.83x10(-4), n= 82 297, respectively). Queries of human biobank data sets revealed associations of rs4888378 with nearby gene expression in vascular tissues (n=126-138). Conclusions-This study identified rs4888378 in the BCAR1-CFDP1-TMEM170A locus as a novel genetic determinant of cIMT and coronary artery disease risk in individuals of European descent. • Recurrent PRDM10 Gene Fusions in Undifferentiated Pleomorphic Sarcoma.
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Clinical Cancer Research. - 1078-0432. ; 21:4, s. 864-869
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: Undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma (UPS) is defined as a sarcoma with cellular pleomorphism and no identifiable line of differentiation. It is typically a high-grade lesion with a metastatic rate of about 1/3. No tumor-specific rearrangement has been identified and genetic markers that could be used for treatment stratification are lacking. We performed transcriptome sequencing (RNA-Seq) to search for novel gene fusions. Experimental design: RNA-Seq, fluorescence in situ hybridization, and/or various PCR methodologies were used to search for gene fusions and rearrangements of the PRDM10 gene in 84 soft tissue sarcomas. Results: Using RNA-Seq, two cases of UPS were found to display novel gene fusions, both involving the transcription factor PRDM10 as the 3'-partner and either MED12 or CITED2 as the 5'-partner gene. Further screening of 82 soft tissue sarcomas for rearrangements of the PRDM10 locus, revealed one more UPS with a MED12/PRDM10 fusion. None of these genes has been implicated in neoplasia-associated gene fusions before. Conclusions: Our results suggest that PRDM10-fusions are present in around 5% of UPS. Although the fusion-positive cases in our series showed the same nuclear pleomorphism and lack of differentiation as other UPS, it is noteworthy that all three were morphologically low-grade and that none of the patients developed metastases. Thus, PRDM10 fusion-positive sarcomas may constitute a clinically important subset of UPS.

  • Photodiodes made from poly(pyridopyrazine vinylene) : polythiophene blends
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Synthetic metals. - 0379-6779 .- 1879-3290. ; 119:1-3, s. 185-186
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A PPV-type polymer with the pyridopyrazine heterocycle (EHH-PPyPzV) has been synthesised and found to have high electron affinity according to electrochemical measurements. When used as the electron accepting material in single-layer-photodiodes, with a thiophene copolymer (PEOPT-co-PAAPT) as the electron donating material, IPCE (incident photon to current conversion efficiency) up to 1% was measured. Atomic force microscopy was used to analyse the blend morphology in the devices.

  • Oxidation of Pyrite by Acidianus brierleyi: Importance of Physical Contact Between the Pyrite and the Microorganisms
  • 1993
  • Ingår i: Biotechnology Letters. - 1573-6776. ; 15:1, s. 99-104
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Experiments were done in order to study the thermophilic archaebacterium Acidianus brierleyi during oxidation of pyrite (FeS2). The microorganisms were grown both separated from the pyrite by a membrane and in close contact with the pyrite. From the results it can be concluded that direct contact is needed for good growth of the strain studied. The obtained results indicated that the direct contact mechanism may be applied to oxidation of sulfidic minerals by A. brierleyi.
