  • A contingency approach of open innovation intermediaries - the management principles of the "intermediary of the unknown"
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: 13th EURAM conference, Istanbul, June 26-29.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Research has improved our understanding of the managerial challenges inherent in exploratory intermediation. For instance knowledge brokers help to solve well-defined problems based on existing competences. But what if the relevant actor networks are not known, if there is no clear common interest, or if there are only ill-defined, wicked problems and no legitimate common place where they can be discussed? The aim of this paper is to explore these management principles for intermediation of the unknown. Can intermediaries be active when the degree of unknown is high? And if so, what can they do and how can they manage and drive collective innovation? We first build on a review of the literature to highlight common core functions of the different types of intermediaries. Then, we introduce the “degree of unknown” as a new dimension for analyzing the role of intermediaries, and we discuss whether the core functions of the intermediary could be fulfilled when the degree of unknown is very high. Our analysis is based on four different empirical case studies in Sweden, France, and Germany where these functions have been tackled in particular because of the low level of pre-existing knowledge. We describe the managerial challenges these intermediaries face in the unknown and we demonstrate examples of how they have been handled. We conclude by discussing the theoretical and empirical perspectives raised by this work. The paper contributes to the theory of innovation intermediaries by exploring the properties of a form of intermediary for which the degree of unknown is a key contingency variable, and describes management principles for such intermediaries. In this way we characterize a new role –the “intermediary of the unknown” – that may be well spread in practice but scarcely analysed in the literature.

  • Rethinking the role of intermediaries as an architect of collective exploration and creation of knowledge in open innovation
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Innovation Management. - 1363-9196. ; 17:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper questions the applicability of traditional notions of intermediary activities, which are usually categorized as either brokering or networking, in cases of high uncertainty regarding technologies, markets or which actors to involve. In the case of collaborative open innovation, especially in circumstances when no single organization is able to take on the challenge alone, the activities traditionally associated with intermediation do not suffice to describe what an intermediary can do to support innovation. This paper presents two cases of intermediaries working with the early phases of traffic safety innovations, and how they have managed to develop their activities beyond solely brokering and networking, but also to take an active role in the process of joint exploration and creation of knowledge. We use a qualitative approach to analyze the two cases in order to provide examples of how rethinking intermediation activities can support open innovation in a collaborative setting. The findings suggest that intermediaries can take on a more active role, which could be described as an architect which designs prerequisites and offers leadership in the process of joint exploration and creation of knowledge.

  • Idea evaluation as a design process : understanding how experts develop ideas and manage fixations
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Design Science. - : Cambridge University Press. - 2053-4701. ; 9
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Idea evaluation is used to identify and select ideas for development as future innovations. However, approaching idea evaluation as a decision gate can limit the role of the person evaluating ideas, create fixation bias, and underutilise the person’s creative potential. Although studies show that during evaluation experts are able to engage in design activities, it is still not clear how they design and develop ideas. The aim of this study was to understand how experts develop ideas during evaluation. Using the think-aloud technique, we identify different ways in which experts develop ideas. Specifically, we show how experts transform initial idea concepts using iterative steps of elaboration and transformation of different idea components. Then, relying on concept-knowledge theory (C-K theory), we identify six types of reasoning that the experts use during idea evaluation. This helps us to distinguish between three different roles that experts can move between during evaluation: gatekeeper, designer managing fixation, and designer managing defixation. These findings suggest that there is value in viewing idea evaluation as a design process because it allows us to identify and leverage the experts’ knowledge and creativity to a fuller extent.

  • What's Next? : Organising Complex Product Development with Lean
  • 2018
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • An everyday question asked during complex product development work is, ‘What to do next’? Not just because the development in itself is advanced and integrated, but also because it is planned and performed in large organisations, in difficult projects, and across organisational lines. There have been different approaches to try and reduce the difficulty of having to organise complex product development, primarily through using different kinds of management models. One such model is Lean product development which has become one of the most used management models within product development organisations.Like in other management research fields, Lean product development still struggles with understanding and describing social interactions; even though their importance has been widely acknowledged. To address this shortcoming, I have adopted a framework: knowing-in-practice and shown how it applies to complex product development. The purpose of this thesis is to explore organising Lean product development as knowing-in-practice by asking: How flow and value are practiced in complex product development work? Fow and value - as constituting concepts for Lean - have been explored using a literature review, which revealed their current interpretations as they apply to complex product development. Though the use of knowing-in-practice an analytical and epistemological framework, four practices and underlying action patterns where identified. These patterns organised complex product development work, while practising also produced flow and value in the work it organised. This has shown that understanding flow and value are situated and produced as a form of outcome from talk. The results indicate that the de-contextualized and overly generalised descriptions that have prevailed in the Lean product development field do not adequacy capture the concepts of flow and value. In the presented practices both the importance of organising complex work through talk is made evident, as well as the situatedness of flows and value. As recursive patterns of action, the practices are what, in this study, is made repeatedly in organizing product development, where everything else is seldom the same. The only constant in organising complex product development work is the continuous question of “What’s next?”.
