  • Bridging the Theory–practice Gap Through Work Integrated Learning- educating Students as Change Agents Advancing the SDGs : A Case Study of WIL in Higher Education at a Master’s Program in Sweden
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: The Contribution of Universities Towards Education for Sustainable Development. - Springer Cham : Springer. ; , s. 579-593
  • Bokkapitel (populärvet., debatt m.m.)abstract
    • This chapter has two key objectives. The first is to explore how Work Integrated Learning (WIL) as a pedagogy can advance education for sustainability in higher education to ensure a sustainable future. The second is to facilitate educators escape dualism between theory and practice while shaping employable graduates able to serve society as change agents. This mixed method study has a qualitative case study design, with an empirical focus on student’ engagement throughout WIL in a Swedish Higher Education Institution (HEI) context. The findings show how WIL addresses unanswered questions in the HEIs collaborative practices that can support the sustainable development considering inherent influences of local and national contexts. Extrapolating from this, this chapter contributes by identifying how WIL can enable students as future change agents through engaging with industry and communities while applying theory on real-life challenges of implementing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

  • Future-Oriented Methodologies for Sustainability
  • 2022. - 1
  • Ingår i: Handbook of Sustainability Science in the Future : Policies, Technologies and Education by 2050 - Policies, Technologies and Education by 2050. - 9783030680749
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Both in the social and natural sciences, methodologies have been developed to deal with relatively stable conditions, where findings can be validated based on past experiences. At a time when both social and natural phenomena are rapidly changing, new approaches are urgently needed to produce knowledge for systemic change, inform high-stakes decisions, and enable sustainability transitions in the face of great uncertainty. To develop methodologies better suited to address the urgent and existential challenges of our times, fundamental assumptions need to be reexamined, while the adequacy of current approaches and scientific practices must be reassessed. This chapter outlines some of the key features required from future-oriented methodologies, including creativity, agility, and collaborative boundary-crossing explorative approaches, as well as conditions that may support or impede methodological development and innovation.

  • We Can Only Do It Together: Addressing Global Sustainability Challenges Through a Collaborative Paradigm
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Universities, Sustainability and Society: Supporting the Implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals. - Cham : Springer International Publishing. - 9783030633981 - 9783030633998 - 9783030634018
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Urgent structural change is required in higher education to allow collaboration both within and acrossuniversities so that achieving a rapid sustainability transition can become the overarching and mainpurpose of education, research and work in society. A review of the literature reveals that fragmentation, caused by traditional hierarchical faculty and disciplinary organisation, is a major obstacle to such goals.Additionally, universities today operate under a competitive paradigm that prevents the transfer andapplication of available knowledge, thereby blocking the development of new knowledge and coherentfuture-oriented approaches. Fragmentation and competition prevent universities from pooling resources, understanding major challenges holistically and using systemic approaches to address them. Politicalagendas, funding priorities and existing mechanisms of dissemination and evaluation of academic activitycontribute to inertia. Rather than applying fragmented sustainability goals within rigid silo structures, action for sustainability needs to be coordinated among academic actors both horizontally and diagonally. This requires spaces for strategic thinking, concertation, open discussion and knowledge sharing. Theinsights achieved in strong sustainability research environments need to direct efforts towards achieving arapid sustainability transition, and priority must be given to structures, networks and research that alreadyenable concertation and collaboration

  • Advancing Resilience for Sustainable Development: A Capacity Development Approach
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Sustainable Development in Africa : Fostering Sustainability in one of the World's Most Promising Continents - Fostering Sustainability in one of the World's Most Promising Continents. - Cham : Springer International Publishing. - 2199-7381 .- 2199-7373. - 9783030746957 - 9783030746926 - 9783030746933 ; , s. 525-540
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • While Africa is one of the most promising continents in the world, it is facing mounting challenges to sustainable development in terms of disaster risk, climate change, environmental degradation and demographic and socioeconomic processes. Societies are thus increasingly conceived as having to be resilient to safeguard what they value over time. However, for resilience to have any practical meaning in relation to sustainable development requires further operationalization to facilitate both conceptual understanding and practical action. This chapter suggests such an operationalization, approaching resilience as an emergent property of a society’s ability to perform different essential functions—anticipation, recognition, adaptation, and learning—and contends that advancing resilience is about developing the capacity to perform these functions. Sustainable development can therefore be pursued through deliberate capacity development efforts explicitly targeting these functions and their interconnections.

  • International Trends and Practices on Sustainability Reporting in Higher Education Institutions
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Sustainability. - : MDPI. - 2071-1050. ; 14:19
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Sustainability reports are regarded as important tools in offering information about the environmental, social, economic, and institutional performance of an institution, and in demonstrating a commitment to matters related to sustainable development. But even though sustainability reporting has been used by a variety of higher education institutions to date, it is not as widely practiced as it should be. To further investigate this topic, a twofold approach was used: a study focusing on sustainability reporting approaches deployed in a sample of 30 universities across a set of countries; and a survey with a sample of 72 universities from different global regions to assess the extent to which they are deploying sustainability reporting as part of their activities. The scientific value of the paper resides in the fact that it offers a comprehensive overview of the subject matter of sustainability reporting, and how higher education institutions handle it. It also outlines the efforts in developing these documents which may catalyse further progress in this key area.

  • Distributive Justice at the Global, National, and Temporal Scales
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: The Encyclopedia of the UN Sustainable Development Goals : Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions - Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions. - Cham : Springer International Publishing. - 9783319710662 ; , s. 24-31
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Justice is an underlying principle and an important lens in understanding sustainable development goals (SDG). There is a need for analysis and clarification on the underlying principles of justice embedded in the SDGs. Goals such as no poverty (goal 1), zero hunger (goal 2), health and well-being (goal 3), gender equality (goal 5), affordable energy (goal 7), reduced inequalities (goal 10) as well as climate action (goal 13) aim for a fair distribution of resources, risks, and benefits for all. There is one specific SDG goal which explicitly mentions “justice” and that is stated in goal 16 in the context of peace and ensuring access to justice for all in effective, accountable, and inclusive institutions at all levels. In achieving these goals, distributive justice is a central element and can guide the political translation of SDG goals and targets in concrete strategies and policies (Oliveira 2018).

  • An assessment of attitudes towards plastics and bioplastics in Europe
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Science of the Total Environment. - : Elsevier. - 0048-9697 .- 1879-1026. ; 755:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Over the last 50 years, conventional fossil-based plastics have become an integral part of our everyday lives. Apart from their low production costs, this is due to a number of their unique properties, including durability, strength, lightness, electrical and thermal insulation, resistance to chemicals and corrosion. The production of plastics has increased from 1.5 million metric tons in 1950 to 359 million metric tons in 2018. Of this total, 61.8 million metric tons were produced in Europe. There are various problems associated with plastic use and disposal that pose a serious threat to both the physical environment and human health. Since public behaviour plays a key role when it comes to the use of plastic, this paper reports on a study that focused on an assessment of attitudes towards plastics and bioplastics in Europe. The results showed that packaging is the most frequent modality of plastic used among participants. In addition, majority of participants are aware that plastic waste can affect environment and human health and therefore segregate and properly dispose plastics. Also, even though most respondents were aware of the environmental problems related to plastic use and showed a positive inclination towards using bioplastic materials, their limited availability and lack of relevant information about bioplastics pose a problem for wider use. Departing from the assumption that the public attitude is a determining factor in the consumption of plastics as a whole and bioplastics in particular, this paper also sheds some light on the current situation, identifying some trends and information gaps which should be addressed in order to encourage a more rational use of plastics in Europe.

  • An overview of the problems posed by plastic products and the role of extended producer responsibility in Europe
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of Cleaner Production. - : Elsevier. - 0959-6526 .- 1879-1786. ; 214, s. 550-558
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Plastic products are easy and convenient for our everyday use, but their negative impacts on human health and the environment cannot be overlooked. The negative impacts and effects of plastic waste are now widely known and have been subject of much recent media coverage, both in Europe and on a global level. Faced with increasing amounts of plastic waste, the European Union as a whole and many European governments in particular, are currently revising the policy options available to cope with the problem. One of the tools which may be deployed with a view to reducing the pressures posed by plastic waste, is the Extended Producer Responsibility principle. It is considered to be one of the major waste management policy instruments that support the implementation of the European waste hierarchy. Its application may assist in fostering the collection and recycling of waste streams that contain plastic. This paper presents an overview of the problems posed by plastic waste, and outlines their environmental dimensions. It discusses the role of the Extended Producer Responsibility principle and provides some recommendations that may be useful in enhancing extended producer responsibility.
