  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article presents two formerly unedited travelaccounts, transcribed from the Swedish manuscripts and translated into English, narrating visits to Herculaneum, the Herculanense Museum and Pompeii, by Georg Fröman, Royal maçon, and Johan Tobias Sergel, sculptor, respectively. The texts are commented and put in historical context. Sergel's thorough accout of the Museum is read in parallel with the one produced by Winckelmann. The article finishes on the impact that the burried cities on early travellers such as these: thrill, freight rather than aesthetic approval.

  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The article treats the experience of Swedish designers, architects and sculptors, who travelled to Pompeii over some 200 years, from the 1760s to the 1920s, and their subsequent appropriation of the Pompeian idiom for creations in Stockholm and surroundings. It puts forth that the kind of premises found appropriate for decorations in Pompeian derivation varied over time, from Royal pleasure houses, sculptors' showrooms to bourgeois homes and apartment houses and, finally, to popular entertainment rooms. It argues that the Pompeian idiom in its Swedish translation was associated early with modernist ideas and later on with socially aware contents.

  • 3D GIS for Cultural Heritage Restoration : a 'white box' workflow
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Journal of Cultural Heritage. - : Elsevier BV. - 1778-3674 .- 1296-2074. ; 18, s. 321-332
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Structures of Architectural Heritage are constantly exposed to natural and human-made threats that can compromise their cultural and artistic values. This is the case of the Roman city of Pompeii, whose preserving conditions nowadays are so critical to let a group of Unesco-appointed experts consider the possible inscription of the property on the list of “World Heritage in Danger”. In this respect improving the effectiveness of preservation strategies becomes a crucial task. A great contribution in this direction is given by the combination of digital technologies such as Laser Scanning, photogrammetry and computer vision-based techniques and 3D Geographic Information systems (3DGIS), whose integrated use could exponentially increase the effectiveness of conservation strategies of ancient buildings. This paper presents the results of a research developed as part of the Swedish Pompeii Project, a fieldwork initiated from the Swedish Institute in Rome in 2000. Main objectives of this research were (i) to develop a set of integrated digital methods to be extensively adopted by conservation specialists in the practice of preservation management; (ii) to deal with several aspects connected to the preservation of an ancient structure in a ‘fully-3D’ environment; (iii) to take advantage of GIS analytic tools for investigating architectural structures in three-dimensions.

  • Digital reconstruction and visualization in archaeology Case-study drawn from the work of the Swedish Pompeii Project
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: 2013 Digital Heritage International Congress. - 9781479931699 ; , s. 621-628
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Swedish Pompeii Project started in 2000 as a research and fieldwork activity initiated by the Swedish Institute in Rome. The aim was to record and analyze an entire Pompeian city-block, Insula V 1. Since autumn 2011 a new branch of advanced digital archaeology, involving 3D reconstructions and documentation methods, was added to the project agenda. The insula was completely digitized using laser scanner technology and the raw data were employed to develop different research activities in the area of digital visualization. This paper presents the recent results of the 3D interpretation of the house of Caecilius Iucundus. This research activity was developed employing a large variety of historical and archaeological sources such as: archaeological reports, historical image documentation (printed as well as in edited material) and analysis of the in situ structures. This work was characterized by the experimentation of a new workflow of data development, where the elaboration of the interpreted structures took place directly in virtual space, using the scanned model as geometrical reference. This method easily connected all the historical and archaeological sources collected for the interpretation, opening a new discussion about different possible interpretation of the house. Moreover, a Cave Automatic Virtual Environment (CAVE) was used in different occasions as platform where the different hypotheses could be discussed in the context given by the actual state of the archaeological structures. The use of an accurate and resolute replica of the site as a backdrop for the virtual reconstruction allowed a high level of control on the proposed hypotheses during the interpretation process. This study enabled the acquisition of new and important information about the house, thus, bringing a significant contribution to the archaeological analysis of Insula V 1, suggested as pilot project for wider use.

  • Experiencing Ancient Buildings from a 3D GIS Perspective : a Case Drawn from the Swedish Pompeii Project
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Journal of Archaeological Method and Theory. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1573-7764 .- 1072-5369. ; 23:1, s. 73-94
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In recent times, archaeological documentation strategies have been considerably improved by the use of advanced 3D acquisition systems. Laser scanning, photogrammetry and computer vision techniques provide archaeologists with new opportunities to investigate and document the archaeological record. In spite of this, the amount of data collected and the geometrical complexity of the models resulting from such acquisition processes, have always prevented their systematic integration into a GIS environment. Recent technological advances occurred in the visualization of 3D contents, led us to overcome the aforementioned limitations and set up a work pipeline in which was possible to put the 3D models not only in the context of data visualization but also in the frame of spatial analysis. The case study described is a part of the Swedish Pompeii Project, a research and fieldwork activity started in 2000 with the purpose of recording and investigating an entire Pompeian city block, Insula V 1. As an additional part of the research, a laser scanning acquisition campaign was conducted in the last few years. The resulting models were thus meant to be used to develop further research lines: among these, a 3D-GIS system was expected to be set up with the purpose to i) collect in the same geo-referenced environment, different typologies of documentation gathered in the context of the Swedish Pompeii Project; ii) inter-connect 3D-models with the project website; iii) use the third-dimension as a further analytical field of investigation, in the form of spatial analysis and cognitive simulation.

  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Swedish Pompeii Project started in 2000 as a fieldwork initiated from the Swedish Institute in Rome. The aim was to record and analyze a full Pompeian city-block, Insula V 1. This paper presents the initial results of one of the actions in the context of this project. In October 2011, two houses were acquired using 3D scanning and 3d-from-photos techniques, and the data was processed to obtain an accurate and complete model. Through the use of Virtual Reality Techniques, it will be possible to visit the Pompeian houses of Casa del Torello and Casa di Cecilio Giocondo understanding the relation between the actual archaeological context and their original outfit. The collected data will be used also to design and test a web-based access system, where the entire dataset will be available for browsing, measurement and data extraction. The features of HTML5, in particular WebGL, will be used to deliver realtime 3D content and interaction.

  • Reconstructing the original Splendour of the House of Caecilius Iucundus : a complete methodology for virtual archaeology aimed at digital exhibition
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: scires. - 2239-4303. ; 6:1, s. 51-66
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The paper analyses the complete methodology adopted in making the computer graphic movie presetning the House of Caecilius Iucundus, Pompeii. It starts with a discussion on the philological correctness of a reconstruction based on different kind of sources, such as paintings, drawings, technical and literary texts, comparisons etc., and proceeds to explore the use of integrated 3D models (both relity-based and source-based) for improving the visitors experience. The reconstruction of the house was accomplished by means of analysing and developing the theoretical and methodological discussion faced in the last years within the scientific community. In particular, we tested the Extended Matrix (EM), a new tool able to keep track and represent the steps involved in the modelling of the source-based model, and adopted a structure that enables us to keep in consideration the different levels of certainity of our sources.

  • From 2D and 3D documentation to 4D interpretation. Building archaeological conclusions and workflow strategies gained by remote study of Insula V 1, Pompeii.
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Opuscula: Annual of the Swedish Institutes At Athens and Rome. - 2000-0898. ; 14, s. 181-226
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The text describes new methods elaborated for and used in the building archaeological assessment of a city block, studied first on site, then remotely by members of the Swedish Pompeii Project. Use of a digital platform, with collected wall observations and analysis, systematic photographic documentation of all standing structures, and 3D models, allowed discussion to proceed after the fieldwork came to an end. The models provided new possibilities and new angles of approach, e.g. examining walls at any given point, studying boundary walls as wall-strings in their full extent, allowing all kinds of sectioning at will, introducing bird’s-eye views as a new perspective in study, and measuring wherever needed. The joint results obtained are summed up in a four-phase development of the use of space: the earliest structures; the late Samnite building boom (2nd century BC); the colony (second half of 1st century BC); the imperial era (until AD 79). This narrative includes conclusions concerning building process and development of masonry techniques and on changes in way of life. Many results affect Pompeian archaeology in general. Results of particular importance concern the character of the early plot division and the understanding of the building process creating the double-atrium house of Caecilius Iucundus, including an anchorage in time for this creation in the Claudian period. The relatively small impact in terms of damage that may be ascribed the literary recorded earthquake of AD 62/63 is also worth noting. The text ends with a suggestion of a new workflow for insula studies.

  • Evading Greek models : Three studies on Roman visual culture
  • 2012
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • For a long time, Roman ideal sculptures have primarily been studied within the tradition of Kopienkritik. Owing to some of the theoretical assumptions tied to this practice, several important aspects of Roman visual culture have been neglected as the overall aim of such research has been to gain new knowledge regarding assumed Classical and Hellenistic models. This thesis is a collection of three studies on Roman ideal sculpture. The articles share three general aims: 1. To show that the practice of Kopienkritik has, so far, not produced convincing interpretations of the sculpture types and motifs discussed. 2. To show that aspects of the methodology tied to the practice of Kopienkritik (thorough examination and comparison of physical forms in sculptures) can, and should, be used to gain insights other than those concerning hypothetical Classical and Hellenistic model images. 3. To present new interpretations of the sculpture types and motifs studied, interpretations which emphasize their role and importance within Roman visual culture. The first article shows that reputed, post-Antique restorations may have an unexpected—and unwanted—impact on the study of ancient sculptures. This is examined by tracing the impact that a restored motif ("Satyrs with cymbals") has had on the study of an ancient sculpture type: the satyr ascribed to the two-figure group "The invitation to the dance". The second article presents and interprets a sculpture type which had previously gone unnoticed—The satyrs of "The Palazzo Massimo-type". The type is interpreted as a variant of "The Marsyas in the forum", a motif that was well known within the Roman cultural context. The third article examines how, and why, two motifs known from Classical models were changed in an eclectic fashion once they had been incorporated into Roman visual culture. The motifs concerned are kalathiskos dancers, which were transformed into Victoriae, and pyrrhic dancers, which were also reinterpreted as mythological figures—the curetes.
