  • Optimal shape of a cold-neutron triple-axis spectrometer
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research Section A: Accelerators, Spectrometers, Detectors and Associated Equipment. - : Elsevier BV. - 0168-9002. ; 634, s. 1-6
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We have performed a McStas optimization of the primary spectrometer for a generic 40 m long, cold-neutron triple-axis spectrometer with a doubly focusing monochromator. The optimal design contains an elliptically focusing guide, a virtual source point before a low-grade PG monochromator, and non-equidistant focusing at the monochromator. The flux at 5 meV shows a gain factor 12 over the "classical" design with a straight 12 x 3 cm(2), m=2 guide and a vertically focusing PG monochromator. In addition, the energy resolution was found to be improved. This unexpectedly large design improvement agrees with the Liouville theorem and can be understood as the product of many smaller gain factors, combined with a more optimal utilization of the beam divergence within the guide. Our results may be relevant for a possible upgrade of a number of cold-neutron triple-axis spectrometers and for a possible triple-axis spectrometer at the European Spallation Source. • Effects of uniaxial pressure on the spin ice Ho2Ti2O7
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. - : American Physical Society. - 2469-9950 .- 2469-9969. ; 102:18
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The spin ice materials Ho2Ti2O7 and Dy2Ti2O7 are experimental and theoretical exemplars of highly frustrated magnetic materials. However, the effects of applied uniaxial pressure are not well studied, and here we report magnetization measurements of Ho2Ti2O7 under uniaxial pressure applied in the [001], [111], and [110] crystalline directions. The basic features are captured by an extension of the dipolar spin ice model. We find a good match between our model and measurements with pressures applied along two of the three directions, and we extend the framework to discuss the influence of crystal misalignment for the third direction. The parameters determined from the magnetization measurements reproduce neutron scattering measurements that we perform under uniaxial pressure applied along the [110] crystalline direction. In the detailed analysis, we include the recently verified susceptibility dependence of the demagnetizing factor. Our work demonstrates the application of a moderate applied pressure to modify the magnetic interaction parameters. The knowledge can be used to predict critical pressures needed to induce new phases and transitions in frustrated materials, and in the case of Ho2Ti2O7 we expect a transition to a ferromagnetic ground state for uniaxial pressures above 3.3 GPa.

  • Neutron guide shielding for the BIFROST spectrometer at ESS
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: VI European Conference On Neutron Scattering (ECNS2015). - : IOP Publishing. ; 746:1
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report on the study of fast-neutron background for the BIFROST spectrometer at ESS. We investigate the effect of background radiation induced by the interaction of fast neutrons from the source with the material of the neutron guide and devise a reasonable fast, thermal/cold neutron shielding solution for the current guide geometry using McStas and MCNPX. We investigate the effectiveness of the steel shielding around the guide by running simulations with three different steel thicknesses. The same approach is used to study the efficiencies of the steel wall a flat cylinder pierced by the guide in the middle and the polyethylene layer. The final model presented here has a 3 cm thick steel shielding around the guide, 30 cm of polyethylene around the shielding, two 5 mm thick B4C layers and a steel wall at position Z = 38 m, being 1 m thick and 10 m in radius. The final model finally proves that it is sufficient to bring the background level below the cosmic neutron rate, which defines an order of magnitude of the lowest obtainable background in the instruments.

  • Design, calibration, and performance of a uniaxial pressure cell for neutron scattering studies of quantum magnetism
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Review of Scientific Instruments. - : AIP Publishing. - 0034-6748 .- 1089-7623. ; 94:10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We provide an overview of a pressure cell designed to apply uniaxial pressure to single crystals for the study, by neutron scattering techniques, of strongly correlated magnetic systems and, in particular, quantum magnets. A detailed overview of the pressure cell components, their requirements, and links to the scientific and technical specifications are presented. The pressure cell is able to accommodate a 200 mm(3) single crystal that can be pressurized up to 2 GPa at cryogenic temperatures. The pressure cell is consistent with the requirements of inelastic neutron scattering and, importantly, neutron polarization analysis. A particular strength of the uniaxial pressure cell is the highly uniform and low background for a wide scattering angle of 360(degrees) horizontally and +/- 20(degrees) vertically. We show the performance of the uniaxial pressure cell using a relevant neutron scattering instrument, the polarized diffuse scattering instrument, D7. The experiments confirm that the cell complies with the scientific and technical requirements. This uniaxial pressure cell will provide a useful additional tool in the sample environment suite available for the study of quantum magnetism.

  • Prediction of beam hardening artefacts in computed tomography using Monte Carlo simulations
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Instruments & Methods in Physics Research. Section B: Beam Interactions with Materials and Atoms. - : Elsevier BV. - 0168-583X. ; 342, s. 314-320
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We show how radiological images of both single and multi material samples can be simulated using the Monte Carlo simulation tool McXtrace and how these images can be used to make a three dimensional reconstruction. Good numerical agreement between the X-ray attenuation coefficient in experimental and simulated data can be obtained, which allows us to use simulated projections in the linearisation procedure for single material samples and in that way reduce beam hardening artefacts. The simulations can be used to predict beam hardening artefacts in multi material samples with complex geometry, illustrated with an example. Linearisation requires knowledge about the X-ray transmission at varying sample thickness, but in some cases homogeneous calibration phantoms are hard to manufacture, which affects the accuracy of the calibration. Using simulated data overcomes the manufacturing problems and in that way improves the calibration. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

  • Gradual emergence of superconductivity in underdoped La2-x Srx CuO4
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. - 2469-9969 .- 2469-9950. ; 107:17
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present triple-axis neutron scattering studies of low-energy magnetic fluctuations in strongly underdoped La2-xSrxCuO4 with x=0.05, 0.06 and 0.07, providing quantitative evidence for a direct competition between these fluctuations and superconductivity. At dopings x=0.06 and x=0.07, three-dimensional superconductivity is found, while only a very weak signature of two-dimensional superconductivity residing in the CuO2 planes is detectable for x=0.05. We find a surprising suppression of the low-energy fluctuations by an external magnetic field at all three dopings. This implies that the response of two-dimensional superconductivity to a magnetic field is similar to that of a bulk superconductor. Our results provide direct evidence of a very gradual onset of superconductivity in cuprates.

  • Non-destructive characterisation of dopant spatial distribution in cuprate superconductors
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Physica C: Superconductivity and its Applications. - : Elsevier BV. - 0921-4534 .- 1873-2143. ; 575
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Proper characterisation of investigated samples is vital when studying superconductivity as impurities and doping inhomogeneities can affect the physical properties of the measured system. We present a method where a polarised neutron imaging setup utilises the precession of spin-polarised neutrons in the presence of a trapped field in the superconducting sample to spatially map out the critical temperature for the phase transition between superconducting and non-superconducting states. We demonstrate this method on a superconducting crystal of the prototypical high-temperature superconductor (La,Sr)2CuO4. The results, which are backed up by complementary magnetic susceptibility measurements, show that the method is able to resolve minor variations in the transition temperature across the length of the LSCO crystal, caused by inhomogeneities in strontium doping.

  • Dipolar spin ice under uniaxial pressure
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. - : American Physical Society. - 2469-9950 .- 2469-9969. ; 100:14
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The magnetically frustrated spin ice family of materials is host to numerous exotic phenomena such as magnetic monopole excitations and macroscopic residual entropy extending to low temperature. A finite-temperature ordering transition in the absence of applied fields has not been experimentally observed in the classical spin ice materials Dy2Ti2O7 and Ho2Ti2O7. Such a transition could be induced by the application of pressure, and in this work we consider the effects of uniaxial pressure on classical spin ice systems. Theoretically, we find that the pressure-induced ordering transition in Dy2Ti2O7 is strongly affected by the dipolar interaction. We also report measurements of the neutron structure factor of Ho2Ti2O7 under pressure and compare the experimental results to the predictions of our theoretical model.

  • Eliminating line of sight in elliptic guides using gravitational curving
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research Section A: Accelerators, Spectrometers, Detectors and Associated Equipment. - : Elsevier BV. - 0168-9002. ; 634, s. 100-103
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Eliminating fast neutrons (lambda < 0.5 angstrom) by removing direct line of sight between the source and the target sample is a well established technique. This can be done with little loss of transmission for a straight neutron guide by horizontal curving. With an elliptic guide shape, however, curving the guide would result in a breakdown of the geometrical focusing mechanism inherent to the elliptical shape, resulting in unwanted reflections and loss of transmission. We present a new and yet untried idea by curving a guide in such a way as to follow the ballistic curve of a neutron in the gravitational field, while still retaining the elliptic shape seen from the accelerated reference frame of the neutron. Analytical calculations and ray-tracing simulations show that this method is useful for cold neutrons at guide lengths in excess of 100 m. We will present some of the latest results for guide optimization relevant for instrument design at the ESS, in particular an off-backscattering spectrometer which utilizes the gravitational curving, for 6.66 angstrom neutrons over a guide length of 300m. • Simulation of a suite of generic long-pulse neutron instruments to optimize the time structure of the European Spallation Source
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Review of Scientific Instruments. - : AIP Publishing. - 1089-7623 .- 0034-6748. ; 84:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We here describe the result of simulations of 15 generic neutron instruments for the long-pulsed European Spallation Source. All instruments have been simulated for 20 different settings of the source time structure, corresponding to pulse lengths between 1 ms and 2 ms; and repetition frequencies between 10 Hz and 25 Hz. The relative change in performance with time structure is given for each instrument, and an unweighted average is calculated. The performance of the instrument suite is proportional to (a) the peak flux and (b) the duty cycle to a power of approximately 0.3. This information is an important input to determining the best accelerator parameters. In addition, we find that in our simple guide systems, most neutrons reaching the sample originate from the central 3-5 cm of the moderator. This result can be used as an input in later optimization of the moderator design. We discuss the relevance and validity of defining a single figure-of-merit for a full facility and compare with evaluations of the individual instrument classes. (C) 2013 AIP Publishing LLC.
