- This publication pays homage to Rugatiri D. K. Mekacha (1956-2001) from Tanzania who is well-known for his contributions to socio-linguistics, Swahili studies, and for teaching in Germany (Bayreuth), Japan (Osaka) and, of course, in Tanzania (at the University of Dar es Salaam). The 14 papers by linguists and scholars from Cameroon, Germany, Tanzania, USA and Zambia collected in this volume focus on linguistic and socio-linguistic issues related to Bantu languages that were also partly addressed in Mekacha’s work. The Bantu languages that are dealt with include Bemba, Bondei, Chewa/Nyanja, Lungu, Luyia, Mbum, Swahili and Tswana. Among the topics covered in this volume are the analysis of loan words, tonology and prosody, language standardization and endangerment, language policy – all of interest to Bantuists and non-Bantuists alike.

- English is the official or co-official language in 21 African nations. Out of these the linguistic landscape analysis here focuses on two countries, that is Namibia and Tanzania. In the latter case, the national language Swahili enjoys de facto the same status as English which, however, for the number of competent speakers is a minority language in this East African country, Namibia and elsewhere in Africa. The paper deals mainly with the English use in various domains, as evidenced in billboard texts, shop signs, on murals, buildings and more. It describes the top-down (originating from central institutions) or bottom up (grassroots) approach to shaping the linguistic landscape in public. From this perspective the paper demonstrates the high prestige of English. (copy from paper text)
