  • How Does the Organizational Culture of Collaborative Networks Influence IT Governance Performance in a Large Organization?
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 51st Annual Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences. - 9780998133119 ; , s. 4941-4951
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In today's complex organizations, IT governance is an important managerial challenge. IT governance deals with decisions and responsibilities concerning IT. There are many factors influencing IT governance. One factor that has remained relatively unexplored by academic research is that of organizational culture. This research explores the influence of the organizational culture of collaborative networks on IT governance performance. A case study was conducted in a large complex company with several networks. The findings indicated that the networks desire different organizational culture types based on their priorities for IT governance outcomes. A clan organizational culture is desired when aiming for effective use of IT for asset utilization and cost effective use of IT. An adhocracy culture is desired when prioritizing the effective use of IT for business growth. Finally a combination of market and hierarchy organizational culture is desired when seeking effective use of IT for business flexibility and cost cutting.

  • IT Organizational Structure Relationship with IT Governance Performance : Case of a Public Organization
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Information Technology Governance in Public Organizations. - Cham, Switzerland : Springer. - 9783319589770 - 9783319589787 ; , s. 229-252
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Information Technology (IT) is widely used in organizations and managers continue to struggle with how to govern IT. IT governance concerns the decision rights and division of responsibilities to achieve value from IT investments. Any IT governance approach is incorporated into a given organizational structure. However in the particular context of public organizations, there is little research on IT organizational structure relationship with IT governance performance. In this research, a case study is done in a public organization to find out how suitable is the organizational structure of the IT department is in relation with the IT governance performance. The results reveal that the IT department organizational structure needs to suit the IT governance performance desired outcomes. In this case, operating as a public organization has actuated the organization to focus on IT governance outcome of effective use of IT for growth. This together with the IT governance archetypes of this public organization for different IT decisions led the IT department leaders to adopt a matrix organizational structure.

  • IS security menace : When security creates insecurity
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: 2016 International Conference on Information Systems, ICIS 2016. - 9780996683135
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Modern organizations face significant information security violations from inside the organizations to which they respond with various managerial techniques. It is widely believed in IS security literature that enforcing IS security policy compliance on employees through various means is the solution for security effectiveness. Nevertheless, this manuscript challenges that notion and advances a stream of research that suggests increasing security measures may lead to decrease in user productivity, increased user mistrust in the IT department, increased user frustration, increased user technology avoidance, increased non-malicious volitional security violations and overall may lead to increased security risk, instead of decreasing it. This manuscript explores the how and the why of these mechanisms and suggests what to do about this phenomenon. Following a grounded theory methodology, this study develops the theory of Information System Security Menace (TISSM), a process model that explores the downsides of IS security measures.

  • Review of IS security policy compliance : Toward the building blocks of an IS asecurity theory
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Data Base for Advances in Information Systems. - 0095-0033. ; 48:3, s. 11-43
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • An understanding of insider threats in information systems (IS) is important to help address one of the dangers lurking within organizations. This article provides a review of the literature on insider compliance (and failure of compliance) with information systems' policies in order to understand the status of IS research regarding negligent and malicious insiders. We begin by defining the terms, developing a new taxonomy of insiders, and then providing a comprehensive review of articles on IS policy compliance for the past 26 years. Grounding the analysis in the literature, we inductively identify four themes to foster Information Security policy compliance among employees. The themes are: 1) IS management philosophy, 2) procedural countermeasures, 3) technical countermeasures, and 4) environmental countermeasures. We propose that future research can draw upon these themes and use them as the building blocks of an indigenous IS security theory.

  • The assumptions and profiles behind IT security behavior
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 50th Annual Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences, HICSS 2017. - 1530-1605. - 9780998133102 ; 2017-January, s. 4987-4996
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Among the major IT security challenges facing organizations is non-malicious employee behavior that nevertheless poses significant threats to an organization's IT security. Using a grounded theory methodology, this paper finds that organizational security behaviors are inherently related to employee assumptions regarding the importance of IT security policy compliance and regarding the reason why IT security measures are implemented. Analyzing these assumptions uncovers four profiles of perspectives concerning IT security: the IT Security Indulgence, the IT Security Overindulgence, the IT Knows Best and the IT Security Disconnect profiles. These profiles are useful in understanding employee IT security behaviors and may help IT departments in developing more effective strategies designed to ensure policy compliance.

  • Harnessing employee innovation in internal crowdsourcing platforms : Lessons from Allianz UK
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: 2016 International Conference on Information Systems, ICIS 2016. - 9780996683135
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Internal crowdsourcing platforms, which enable firms to generate a large pool of ideas and connect employees to large number of colleagues, hold the potential to support employee innovation. Yet, managers face considerable difficulties when it comes to deploying such platforms in a way that generates business value. This article describes the eight years-long evolution of Allianz UK efforts to tap into its employees' ideas to drive innovation as a collective capacity. It identifies the challenges the firm faced with its internal crowdsourcing journey and describes the organizational design mechanisms adopted by leaders to address them. Our analysis reveals the necessity to adopt a configurational perspective among design elements to reinforce value creation. It details the design elements adopted by the firm to harness employee innovation and distills the lessons learned along the way.

  • How Allianz UK used an idea management platform to harness employee innovation
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: MIS Quarterly Executive. - 1540-1960. ; 17:2, s. 141-157
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Idea management platforms enable firms to generate pools of innovation ideas from a large number of employees. However, managers face considerable difficulties when deploying these platforms in a way that generates business value. This article describes the challenges faced by Allianz UK, and the management responses, as it deployed such a platform to develop a distributed-innovation capability. Based on insights from this case, we provide recommendations that other organizations can use to derive value from idea management platforms.

  • Inside the mind of an IT champion
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Journal of Decision Systems. - : Informa UK Limited. - 2116-7052 .- 1246-0125. ; 25:S1, s. 500-511
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • IT champions have considerable influence on the adoption of a new technology in organisations. A champion engages in a new technology and uses influential tactics to sell and implement it in the organisation. While the importance of IT champions is well documented, very little is understood about how a champion makes sense of a new technology and what sources of beliefs influence the technology commitment of an IT champion. Using an organisation vision lensat the individual level of analysis, this study investigates individuals who championed the adoption of mobile business intelligence (mBI) in their organisations. Our qualitative analysis suggests that the m- BI organising vision influences IT champions through their m-BI perception and organisational needs perception as they engage in the process of identifying and making sense of the potential of m-BI. Furthermore, an IT champion actively participates and contributes in the organising vision discourse.
