- This is the first time the Church of Sweden's food aid has been mapped statistically and nationally. Food aid is the most common material aid to people in economic vulnerability and a full 86% of the parishes and pastorates in the Church of Sweden work with it. This chapter describes the extent, frequency, composition of the recipient's household, main group affiliation and whether food aid is considered to have increased.

- Syftet med denna översiktsartikel är att sätta in matdistribution till personer i fattigdom i ett sammanhang, för att bättre förstå dess betydelse för mottagare, civilsamhällesorganisationer och i förlängningen även välfärdsmodellen i Sverige. Artikeln synliggör en förändring där ett ökat behov av kostnadsfri eller billig mat för fattiga grupper möts av ett ökat utbud av mat distribuerat av civilsamhället, en till synes ideal lösning för minskad fattigdom och klimatkris. Analysen visar dock på en spänning och en dubbelsidighet mellan synbart högst önskvärda effekter (att mat ej kastas och människor i fattigdom får mat för dagen) och förvånansvärt allvarliga potentiella bieffekter och underliggande problem. Till det senare räknas transformation och risk för institutionalisering av civilsamhällets arbete som innebär en diffusion av ansvar och mix av institutionella logiker mellan offentlig välfärd, näringsliv och civilsamhälle. Konklusionen blir att en hållbarhetsparadox tar form och att fattigdom och klimat kan visa sig vara två separata problem som kräver sina separata lösningar.

- The purpose of this article is to contextualize food distribution to better understand its significance for poor recipients, civil society organisations, and ultimately also the Swedish welfare model. The article highlights a change wherean increased need for free or cheap food for poor groups is handled by anincreased supply of food waste distributed by civil society organisations, a seemingly ideal and innovative solution to reduce poverty and the climate crisis.However, the results show tension and a duality between apparent beneficialeffects (that food is not thrown away and that people in poverty get affordablefood) and surprisingly serious potential side effects and underlying problems.The latter includes the transformation and risk of institutionalization of civilsociety’s work, which may lead to diffusion of responsibility and a mix of institutional logic between public welfare, business, and civil society. In conclusion, a sustainability paradox takes shape, and it suggests that poverty and climate change may be two separate problems that require their separate solutions.

- Despite changes in the Swedish welfare system with a devaluation of income from the Social Services and a request from government to civil society to carry out welfare tasks, little research has been conducted on service users’ experience of support from civil society. This article investigates service users’ reasons for seeking economic support from the Church of Sweden and what they think characterized their interaction with the deacons. The empirical material is based on interviews with nine service users who received social assistance from the Social Services, while simultaneously seeking economic support from the Church. We find that the informants have three reasons for turning to the Church for support: (i) the perceived deterioration in support from the Social Services, (ii) the easily accessible application procedure, and (iii) the opportunity to hide the support from the Social Services. The interaction is characterized by exhaustion due to poverty and an emotional relationship between service users and deacons. However, the service users applied instrumental and strategic thinking in their interactions with deacons, while criticizing authorities for the same logic, which we referred to as “the instrumental paradox”.
