  • An alternative reading of religion and authoritarianism : the new logic between religion and state in the AKPs New Turkey
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of Southeast European and Black Sea Studies. - : Routledge. - 1468-3857 .- 1743-9639. ; 19:1, s. 79-98
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Since roughly 2011, the Turkish state and the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) have been going through a process of mutual transformation. Some of the historical apprehensions, biases and frustrations exhibited by Turkey as a middle power have been absorbed by the relatively reformist AKP. Conversely, the AKP and its undisputed leader Erdogan have seen their socio-political fears, power based conflicts and ethno-religious desires become dominant in all areas, including religion. As a consequence of this bilateral transformation, Turkey has become both an inclusionary and a hegemonic-authoritarian state, and at the same time a weak one. Within this new identity and structure of the state, Sunni Islam has become one of the regimes key focal points, with a new logic. This article seeks to explain the transformation of the relations between the AKPs Turkish state, religion and religious groups, by scrutinising Karrie Koesels logic of state-religion interaction in authoritarian regimes.

  • A little something goes a long way : The downtoner (a) little in the Old Bailey Corpus
  • 2017
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Various intensifier studies (e.g. Ito & Tagliamonte 2003, Tagliamonte 2008) have noted the dominance of very few forms. If one checks downtoners in the Old Bailey Corpus (OBC 2.0), comprising ca. 24 million words spoken in a courtroom context in the period 1720-1913, it turns out that little is by far the most frequent downtoner (with the exception of the multifunctional intensifier quite) with around 8,000 occurrences. Therefore this contribution will be entirely devoted to the structural and functional profile of (a) little in Late Modern English speech-related data (we will leave the other 104 downtoners for a later paper); this period and our source, OBC, have so far been largely neglected in intensifier and especially in downtoner studies. The two downtoners little and a little can function as minimizer and diminisher respectively, and also in negative litotic contexts (Quirk et al. 1985: 598, Bolinger 1972: 131, 234). Stoffel (1901: 131) further mentions the variant a leetle with emphasized long vowel to express “the very smallest degree”. Partly depending on the forms (+/- article), they can modify nouns, adjectives, and verbs, but with certain restrictions, such as little mostly with comparatives/past participles and mental verbs (Bolinger 1972: 50f). (A) little may have quantity/frequency/duration and diminutive meanings, which need to be distinguished from the degree meaning most relevant here; this partly goes together with different syntactic uses and positions (e.g. emphatic front position and inversion). Modern little seems to be more open than other types to being itself intensified. We therefore seek to answer the following questions: What are the targets that speakers in the courtroom modify by using (a) little (nouns, verbs, adjectives, potentially even adverbs)? Are the restrictions noted for modern usage already in evidence or emerging? How do the modification patterns correlate with the different meanings and (pragmatic) functions? In which syntactic contexts are degree meanings most prominent? What are the distributions of the degree forms across various types of speakers with regard to speakers’ social (e.g. gender and rank) and functional (e.g. judge, witness) roles? Which are the most innovative/conservative types of users in sociolinguistic respects? Comparisons will also be drawn to the results of our previous work on a bit (Claridge & Kytö 2014), whose uses partly overlap with a little but which is a younger form. It may be assumed that (a) little is, in comparison, more established in the degree function.

  • Atomic Scale Design of Clean Energy Materials : Efficient Solar Energy Conversion and Gas Sensing
  • 2012
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The focus of this doctoral thesis is the atomic level design of photocatalysts and gas sensing materials. The band gap narrowing in the metal oxides for the visible-light driven photocatalyst as well as the interaction of water and gas molecules on the reactive surfaces of metal oxides and the electronic structure of kaolinite has been studied by the state-of-art calculations. Present thesis is organized into three sections. The first section discusses the possibility of converting UV active photocatalysts (such as Sr2Nb2O7, NaTaO3, SrTiO3, BiTaO4 and BiNbO4) into a visible active photocatalysts by their band gap engineering. Foreign elements doping in wide band gap semiconductors is an important strategy to reduce their band gap. Therefore, we have investigated the importance of mono- and co-anionic/cationic doping on UV active photocatalysts. The semiconductor's band edge position is calculated with respect to the water oxidation/reduction potential for various doping. Moreover, the tuning of valence and conduction band edge position is discussed on the basis of dopant's p/d orbital energy. In the second section of thesis the energetic, electronic and optical properties of TiO2, NiO and β-Si3N4 have been discussed to describe the adsorption mechanism of gas molecules at the surfaces. The dissociation of water into H+ or OH- occurs on the O-vacancy site of the (001)-surface of rutile TiO2 nanowire, which is due to the charge transfer from Ti atom to water molecule. The dissociation of water into OH- and imino (NH) groups is also observed on the β-Si3N4 (0001)-surface due to the dangling bonds of the lower coordinated N and Si surface atoms. Fixation of the SO2 molecules on the anatase TiO2 surfaces with O-deficiency have been investigated by Density Functional Theory (DFT) simulation and Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. DFT calculations have been employed to explore the gas-sensing mechanism of NiO (100)-surface on the basis of energetic and electronic properties. In the final section the focus is to describe the optical band gap of pristine kaolinite using the hybrid functional method and GW approach. Different possible intrinsic defects in the kaolinite (001) basal surface have been studied and their effect on the electronic structure has been explained. The detailed electronic structure of natural kaolinite has been determined by the combined efforts of first principles calculations and Near Edge X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (NEXAFS).

  • Military Occupations and Tourism
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Routledge Handbook of Borders and Tourism. - London : Routledge. - 9781003038993 ; , s. 145-160
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The authors explore the multiple relationships between military occupations and tourism. The arrival of a foreign military power can have devastating consequences on a nation’s tourism industry. The destruction of war, the burden of sanctions, and the imposition of martial law, new rules and currencies, and restrictions on movement can all work to cripple the tourism supply and demand of a newly occupied territory. While giving attention to such negative consequences, in this chapter the authors also highlight other more unexpected aspects of the tourism–occupation nexus. In particular, they focus on the ways in which tourism provides opportunities for occupiers to profit from and justify their occupation. At the same time, it is also clear that tourism can be used to challenge occupation and to destabilise the occupier’s narrative. To explore these various relationships, the authors review the literature on tourism and military occupations that takes in events ranging from the British occupation of Napoleonic France in the early nineteenth century to the Russian occupation of Ukraine today. They complement this review with insights from their fieldwork in Palestine.
