  • Needs and ambitions in Swedish disability care
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Disability Research. - : Routledge. - 1501-7419 .- 1745-3011. ; 10:4, s. 237-257
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Swedish Disability Act, LSS, was introduced to guarantee good living conditions for people with severe disabilities. A specific goal was to overcome local variation in support. However, considerable differences still remain between the municipalities. In this study we have identified six characteristics to explain this variation: earlier presence of residential institutions, population density, human capital (age, education, employment, health), local culture, land area and stable left-wing government. The results support a need-responsiveness model of welfare but also signal accessability problems and a regional propensity to demand and provide independently of needs. This means that spatial equity is violated. In sum, it still matters where you live.

  • A kinder, gentler democracy : The consensus model and Swedish disability politics
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Political Studies. - : Wiley. - 0080-6757 .- 1467-9477. ; 31:3, s. 291-310
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    •  Arend Lijphart’s seminal consensus model of democracy does not only try to explain how democracy actually works. It also purports to be a ‘kinder, gentler’ form of democracy with regard to e.g. unemployment, disability, illness and old age. So far, this conjecture has not been brought to a systematic test which is the purpose of this article. We look into the consequences for one of the areas Lijphart singles out: disability. Does consensus democracy promote a more generous policy towards disabled people than majoritarian democracy? We transfer Lijphart’s theory to municipality level. In Sweden, disability care is namely the responsibility for the municipalities, which are comparatively large and independent and with the right to tax their citizens; they are like small nation-states. There is, however, a considerable variation in disability support between them. Some give ten times as much support than others. Is it those governed according to the consensus model? Our approach helps controlling for the variation in political and cultural context and expands the number of observations. The statistical comparison of Swedish municipalities does not, however, lend any confirmation of the famous theory. Instead, there are reasons to doubt that consensus democracy promotes more generous policies.

  • Antenna arrangement and a communication arrangement comprising the same
  • 2002
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The present invention relates an antenna arrangement (23, 330, 430, 530, 630) comprising a fit layer (331, 431, 531, 631) consisting of a dielectric material and a second reflective layer (335, 435, 535, 640, The dielectric material has variable dielectric characteristics. An electromagnetic radiation (50) passing through said first layer (331, 431, 531, 631) and at least partly reflected by said second layer (335, 435, 535, 640) is modulated by varying said variable dielectric characteristics of said first layer.

  • När verkligheten sparkar bakut
  • 2006
Annars sparkar verkligheten bakut.

  • Genetic fine mapping and genomic annotation defines causal mechanisms at type 2 diabetes susceptibility loci.
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Nature Genetics. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1546-1718 .- 1061-4036. ; 47:12, s. 1415-1415
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We performed fine mapping of 39 established type 2 diabetes (T2D) loci in 27,206 cases and 57,574 controls of European ancestry. We identified 49 distinct association signals at these loci, including five mapping in or near KCNQ1. 'Credible sets' of the variants most likely to drive each distinct signal mapped predominantly to noncoding sequence, implying that association with T2D is mediated through gene regulation. Credible set variants were enriched for overlap with FOXA2 chromatin immunoprecipitation binding sites in human islet and liver cells, including at MTNR1B, where fine mapping implicated rs10830963 as driving T2D association. We confirmed that the T2D risk allele for this SNP increases FOXA2-bound enhancer activity in islet- and liver-derived cells. We observed allele-specific differences in NEUROD1 binding in islet-derived cells, consistent with evidence that the T2D risk allele increases islet MTNR1B expression. Our study demonstrates how integration of genetic and genomic information can define molecular mechanisms through which variants underlying association signals exert their effects on disease.

  • Advancements in Lithium-Based Batteries : Unraveling and Mitigating Performance-Limiting Phenomena in Negative Electrodes
  • 2023
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The development of lithium-based batteries, especially lithium-ion batteries, has changed our daily lives significantly. The technologies first enabled by lithium-based batteries are now in turn creating a demand for better lithium-based batteries with higher energy densities and longer cycling lifetimes. This requires studies and development of negative electrodes, with a particular focus on gaining a better and more complete understanding of all performance-limiting phenomena and to develop appropriate mitigation strategies. For negative electrodes based on alloy-forming materials such as silicon, aluminum and tin, it has, recently been shown that capacities losses can result from diffusion-controlled trapping of lithium due to an incomplete delithiation of the electrodes. In the first part of the thesis, it is demonstrated explicitly that such a lithium trapping effect also is seen for conventional graphite electrodes. This effect is further demonstrated to greatly affect the cycle life performance of NMC811/graphite full cells during high-rate cycling. However, it is also demonstrated that the inclusion of constant-voltage delithiation steps can increase the delithiation efficiency and decrease the influence of the trapping effect. The use of silicon electrodes based on silicon nanoparticles is also revisited. It is proposed that the influence of the lithium trapping effect seen for such electrodes is affected by the size of the employed silicon nanoparticles, most likely, via its influence on the electrode microstructure. Replacing the currently used negative electrodes with lithium-metal electrodes, especially in a “anode-free” configuration, can significantly increase the energy densities of lithium-based batteries due to the high capacity and low electrochemical potential of elemental lithium. However, the inhomogeneous lithium deposition and stripping greatly limit the cycling performance. In the second part of this thesis, strategies focusing on electrochemically controlling the nucleation and growth of lithium are proposed to improve the deposition of lithium on lithium-metal electrodes as well as directly on copper current collectors. In the former study, it is shown that forming a great number of homogeneously distributed nucleation sites across the entire electrode surface, via the introduction of a one-second long potentiostatic oxidation pulse, subsequently yields more homogeneous lithium deposition. In the second study, it is found that the nucleation of lithium on copper current collectors can be affected by the diffusion of lithium into the current collectors. It is also demonstrated that the influence of this effect can be decreased by chemically prelithiating the current collectors so that more homogeneous lithium deposition can be attained.
